Southern States needs to have a better return and exchange policy regarding bushes and trees. My crepe myrtles I got from them weren’t all too healthy after planting 9 months ago. Used some planting soil, fertilizer, and small amount of cow manure….as I do for anything else. Typically, I don’t save my receipts for garden items, but I happened to have done so and called and spoke to the garden manager who informed me that they only have a six month return policy. I just wanted to exchange them. Please do better for the community and give us the reason to support a smaller business, rather than the box stores that have a 12 month return/exchange policy on their trees and shrubbery.Edit 4/20/24I will always admit when I am wrong and never willfully trash a person or business. So, couple weeks after I left the 2 star review I added a star today because they started getting buds. Apparently crepes take a while to catch up when most is already halfway in bloom. That said, the garden manager could’ve made a concession since I was only looking to exchange for new/healthier ones. I would’ve made it 5 stars if he worked with me. SS may not get rich on shrubbery, but really….. try having some compassion for a dedicated local consumer.

This place is awesome. Especially the people. Everyone is so pleasant and in a day and age where so many want to do the minimum, if that, they all go out of thier way to be as helpful as possible and are the big reason I go here. Can't recommend them enough.

Love this place. Very helpful when you’re looking for something. They even go an extra mile. I was looking for a particular plant, a lady from the management did a research for me and explained the zoning of plants they got. I enjoyed this place even for a while that I was only exploring Mebaine.

I'd give five stars, but their plants were wilted and severely underwatered. It was the end of day, so maybe they watere at closing, but it's a shame to sell plants that are wilted. Please water your veggies!

Went in to see what flowers they had since they have a clearance sale right now. I wasn't sure how much perinials were marked down so I went in to ask. Two young men were at the register and one was doing something on one of them and the other guy looked at him and said I'll be back. I stood there for at least a minute waiting for help and was never even acknowledged. They could have said "I'll be with you in a minute" or anything but nope, nothing. I walked out. I shouldn't be surprised since that's typically the way the staff is anytime I've been there. I like going because of the flower selection but after today I will go to the one in Carboro. They are always nice and the selection is better.

Southern states always has a nice staff. They are always there to help you. They have a great selection of plants but no longer carry fruit barring trees except for lemons and limes. This store is always clean and super nice. They have great prices. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone!

Nice clean store with a good selection. But there is one thing I will never understand....why does every store that sells ceramic flower pots insist on over pricing them? Seriously, it's just a fired hunk of clay with a glass coating. It only has one use! I have seen the same pots sitting on the shelf for literally years. Lower the price to a reasonable level, and don't try to make 300 per cent markup!!!!

Tried this store one more time because it’s convenient to were I live. But this time same bad attitude from the young blonde girl at the register. Also this time around there were no carts to carry the feed to be found. This place really needs to take a page out of the Carrboro stores book, they know how to run their store and are very friendly tooUpdate 5/15/22. Went to get goat food and saw they had a pallet out front with torn bags and a sign that said 50% off. I grabbed one of those bags and a free more from inside. When I checked out she said it was 30% off and when I mentioned the sign she acted like I personally offended her and went out and tore the sign down. I really wish this store wasn’t so close to me making it hard for me not to get feed here. This place is almost never a good, a lack of customer service is one thing but the whole attitude as if the customers are bothering you when they are there to spend money never made since to me.

This is one of my "go to" stores for plants and bird seed. They have a good selection of flowers, shrubs, & veggie starts to choose from along with decent prices. I almost always find something that I wasn't looking for and today it was a bright yellow coneflower to add to my collection. Staff always nice and knowledgeable. And if you are looking for NC items like honey or jams, they usually have some; especially when looking for Christmas gifts.

Very disappointed and they hadn’t even opened yet. Instead of going to Lowe’s a 1/4 mile down the road, I decided to shop a locally owned business. They were closed and the gate at the entrance was locked. An employee pulled up and informed me they did not open until 10am. It was 9:45 and I asked if I could wait and she said no problem. About 3 minutes later I heard a honk and realized there was a truck trying to pull into the very large space between me and the other vehicle at the gate. I assumed I was in the way so I backed up and pulled back onto the road and turned around into another parking lot. While I was pulling out this truck accelerated very quickly as if I had inconvenienced them. Again, there was in no way I was blocking anything and seemed they were upset about something. I pulled in the lot and parked at the front door and was just waiting until they opened to go and get a ton of gardening supplies. I could tell neither of the two employees wanted to be there and had an attitude that was apparent. I hope this individual and the other employees days improve as well as their attitudes. I went and spent my hundreds of dollars at Lowe’s next door.

I love the garden center. It has the best selection of unique and beautiful plants that I've seen anywhere. I also love the selection of pottery and garden decorations along with the fish and supplies. Seth is so knowledgeable about everything he stocks. I dont go anyplace else for my garden and fish supplies anymore. I wish you would stock uv pond filters/pumps. It's hard to know what's the best product when searching on the web. Keep up the good work. I tell all my gardening friends about SS Mebane.

Southern States has some of the most helpful staff there is. They helped is figure out everything we needed and gave us excellent advice for what to do to care for our plants. They have a great selection of shrubs, bushes, and trees in addition to their selection of items for the farm. Would recommend them to home owners looking to add to their landscaping!

Always a pleasure shopping at this SS. Staff is professional and pleasant. Normally make it a point to stop here for landscaping needs even though we work in the Chapel Hill/Durham area. Hey and if you spend $400 on a brand new stihl trimmer you get a free hat. Lol.

I think this is the first review I’ve ever left for a business on Google and I’m going to call the store personally when I’m done here but I feel like good customer service needs to be recognized.I purchased a chainsaw from this location a few months back and got the extended warranty. I used the chainsaw for a total of two days to cut up a tree which fell in my yard. By the end of day one the chainsaw was dragging and the blade was smoking trying to get through the remainder of the tree... so I ordered a Stihl chainsaw blade sharper from Amazon and went to town on the blade. Easy enough, right? Stick the thing on the blade, slide slide slide. We’re done.Same result. The chainsaw simply wouldn’t cut.At this point, I got frustrated, did some research online for possible solutions, poked and prodded but nothing changed so the chainsaw sat in my garage for the next two and a half months with half a tree still in my driveway.I finally got brave enough to take the chainsaw back to the store. I had no idea how the warranty service would work. I walked in, asked the man at the counter what I needed and he called a guy named Matt up from the back. I told Matt what the problem was and he looked up and said, “I’ve got some time this morning. Let me take it back and look at it and I’ll let you know. Maybe about an hour? No charge or anything, don’t worry about it.”So I left, surprised. I came back a few hours later and they called Matt out of the back again. He said, “hey man, come on back.” And we walked back to his little corner and there was my chainsaw sitting on the counter with a beautifully sharpened blade.Matt said, “what size blade sharpener did you use on it?” And I said, “crap. They come in different sizes?!” He said, “yep! Lemme show you something.” And he proceeded to show me in detail what I had done wrong with the top-small Stihl blade sharpened as well as walked me through how to properly sharpen a blade using a single round file. He also put a new blade on my saw with a cats-claw sharpness.All of this without a second thought. THIS is good customer service. They’ve got my business.Thanks Matt, truly. Southern States, hang on to that guy.

Why do I like this place? Hmm. The store sort of straddles the void between people who make their living on the land and those who have basically invaded their territory. The Invaders (I'm one) work in offices and live in suburbs. So they sometimes might need a raccoon trap. Or sometimes they might need a nice planter for their patio. Or maybe a good chainsaw.

Walked in saturday night december 14th at a quarter till 6. They close at 6 while i was standing at the dog food trying to figure out which one to get they turn the lights out on me. Young lady the counter didn't say a word as i walked out the door. Not to worry won't be going back anyway.

Ryan from Southern States delivered lp gas to our house today. The tank was empty, so he called Ron, also from Southern States -- to help with a pressure test which, I understand , is required for empty tanks. They found a gas leak in the house! These two very fine gentlemen did not stop until they had located and fixed the leak. Now our gas is back on for the long weekend and I am very grateful for their excellent service. Five well-earned stars and many thanks.

They are very unprofessional and lazy. Two of the Car's were talking at the desk while I was loading 50 lb bags of feed (my husband just had foot surgery and couldn't help). The female watched me load 5.bags which finalized my order THEN she asked if I needed any help.

Staff is GREAT! Could not ask for more helpful folks! However, Southern States no longer caters to "famers," although they do carry items that a small family farm might use. Time and time again I have heard old time farmer's complain that SS no longer wants to meet their farming needs. They have gone elsewhere. Just this morning I spoke to another long time farmer who said SS' motto of "Farmer Owned Since 1923" no longer applies. They have lost the sense of what that used to mean. It would be nice if they got back to their roots, but I sincerely doubt that's going to happen. They have been urbanized and have lost touch with what used to be their rural base. Still a good place to shop for basic farm needs.

Good quality farm equipment. Knowable staff. If I didn’t ask : I would have bought a saw blade for my weed wacker that wouldn’t do the job.One of the only places around that sells Stihl equipment. In my opinion Stihl sells the Best chain saws on the market. Stihl’s other outdoor equipment is also excellent.

Southern states carries a large variety of hard-to-find items which you will not find at Walmart Home Depot or Lowe’s especially for feeding outdoor birds or animals and many specialty products.
