I was very happy with getting my Chester. He had all vaccines and microchip. The only requirement for me was have him neutered. Which he is .The staff is great ! They go through so much taking care of homeless animals. If I could I would have a big yard and house for bunches of dogs. Thank you HARNETT COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER..

Fostered to adopt a Catahoula puppy. My experience there was mostly positive. The staff lady at the front window can be both rude and friendly, depending on her mood I suppose. First interaction was bad (when I went to pick up the puppy), the next two where professional, positive and informative (when I took him back for his shots).I love my puppy and I'm grateful for their service. Overall the experience was good. I would recommend to a friend.

My wife finds a female Rottweiler who just had a litter on the side of the road. We house, feed, clean this sweet girl for several days with no owner answering on any of the sites we posted her on. Only after someone writes that they know somebody who knows somebody who may know the owner, animal control shows up with a sheriff at my door talking about felony harboring of a dog. Serving for 16 years in the Army and still going, I'll be contacting US state Representative Joe Pike (who represents harnett county) about the treatment of people doing the right thing for animals. It's illegal to pick up a stray but no crime for someone who can't keep control of their dog??????

Shameful. Good luck to you if you need this department's help. My heart goes to you. I've tried contacting multiple times, multiple #s, filed missing pet reports, left messages. Nothing. My lost pet report isn't even posted.

Violent out of control dog in our neighborhood. Has attacked 2 of my own while me and the wife are walking them. Multiple other dogs have been attacked as well and it has charged my wife, my kid and my neighbors 2 year old. I have called multiple times (5+) and it seams like no one here wants to do anything but sit on there but and collect a check. Leaving a message does nothing as no one ever calls backm These are deplorable sorry excuses for human being with complete disregard for children's safety.

We recently had our ole girl Bella come to the end of her time. As w most families were not very good at that part of pet ownership so we took her to the shelter n the staff took great care of us and her. They were very empathetic and helpful. They made a very sad part of life the best that could be expected. Thank you all and keep up the great work

Let me answer the "rescue" question I keep seeing. This may or may not apply to this pound. I can only say I have seen this system at work. Some NON-PROFIT rescues are not really that, they are full on dog sellers. Here is the scam: The local animal control employee, whatever their job is, watches the intakes. When a pretty, or small, or especially sweet dog comes in, they call the rescue. The rescue then come and generally pays a "finder's fee" to the employee and adopts the dog. Most pounds have a shot and spay neuter program, some even have a microchip program that uses tax payer dollars to fund those services. So for the usual pound adoption fee of $25-$75, a finder's fee of $25 with maybe an extra $20 for a spay fee the rescue may have $100 in. Perfectly adoptable sweet little dog. These dogs serve 2 purposes. 1. To get donations from adoption events. This is how the conversation goes."OMG! What a sweet little fur-baby! I really want her!" Oh! That's wonderful! We have been looking for a home for that one for along time. All you have to do is fill out this adoption form and someone will get back to you ASAP."(After 20 minutes the form is given back..."Thank you, would you like to donate to the rescue?"Now you really want.this dog, you gonna say no?You may never hear from them again or the one time you do will be to tell you unfortunately, they found a better match for the dog you wanted.Purpose 2. They sell the dogs on petfinder.com. The sale price is called an adoption fee. I have seen them as high as $600, but generally it's about $200.So that is what the pound means by "Rescue only"This is Hurricane Delilah, her pound price was $25, her rescue sale price was $275.00.

Went there today for a Great Pyrenees mixed Polly, I met Larrya and his staffs, I found tye shelter is very clean no bad smell like most shelters I've been. Dogs are clean enough. I've seen way worse. Rescue can pull dogs for free here just fill out form online to be rescue partner. I saw other reviews talking about fee for shelter? That's not what I heard today. I very appreciate what they're doing for animals, its a rural area but they're working hard. 5 stars!!

Very small compared to the ones in California, yup, that's where I'm from. It's always sad to go and visit animals, we fortunately left without any more because we have 6 cats and 2 dogs, ugh.

So animal control have been out to the house next door for dogs running free and eating livestock. These dogs are not only still running free but they are jumping on the side of my truck trying to get to my dog. They are aware of this from there last visit because they thought it was my dogs doing the damage. now I try to reach out to them because it happened again today and guess what. no answer. call during regular business hours. now the female has 3 new puppies at the road.

We recently adopted a fur baby from this shelter during clear the shelter event. It was an amazing experience and all of the staff was very kind and you can tell they love the animals. That was very heartwarming. We ended up with “the one” that was meant for our family.

I visited the shelter yesterday to adopt a kitten. I was pleasantly surprised how clean and sanitary the dog pens were. The staff was friendly, helpful, and so obvious they loved and cared for the animals under their care. Please consider adopting from your shelter before purchasing from a breeder or pet store. You will be saving an animal from having to be put down due to over population.

1. Those complaining about the rescues getting first dibs, do you realize how incredibly selfish you're being to be upset by this? When a rescue commits to the animal, the shelter knows they will fulfill the commitment. This frees up more space for more animals. If you want the animal, then apply for it with the rescue. My guess is people call all the time saying they are coming to get an animal and never show up.2. If you're complaining about how you were treated when surrendering an animal, this is an easy fix. You committed to an animal, you need to fulfill that commitment until the end. Very few excuses for turning in an animal are legitimate. They are lolivi beings with feelings.I adopted from this shelter and it was a wonderful experience. The staff was nice but also overwhelmed because as I'm trying to fill out paperwork for the 4 year old dog that someone decided they "didn't want the responsibility for," new surrenders are coming in the door. They answered as many questions as they could. They love animals. They do the best they can with what they have. This is a rural shelter with limited resources. The dog we adopted is wonderful! Please if you're looking for a new friend, consider this shelter.

We adopted one of our dogs from this shelter and it was a very nice experience. They were very accommodating as we made several visits. They give you a substantial credit to spay/neuter your new furry friend.Yes they are a kill shelter and in a perfect world with unlimited funds those wouldn't exist. The fine men and women that work there do their best to do their jobs with dignity and provide the best and most humane care.

Excellent and knowledgeable staff, we have adopted both cats and dogs without issue. The sad fact is that this is a kill-shelter and without the support of County Supervisors and the community, unfortunately this will not change. If it were not a kill shelter I would rate 5 stars. Contact the Board of Supervisors and let them know that this facility needs a larger budget and to strive for no kill. In the mean time, spay and neuter your animals!

High-Kill shelter. People, if you are going to adopt a pet, whether be it a dog or cat, PLEASE, I beg you, adopt from this place. They charge a tiny fee of 25$.These animals are on death row. They get a couple days to a week IF they have the room. Sure, maybe they aren't the nicest facility. Maybe its not the cleanest, friendliest (staff), or most accomadated place but that does not reflect the animals it reflects the humans. I have been here and they have some awesome cats and dogs. Even pure bred, at times! I adopted my Bella (chocolate lab) from here and she has been a wonderful, life long friend. So, I can't stress this enough: Give these animals a bright future, a warm sunny day. Let them see the sun rise the next morning. Everyone is into "rescuing" these days and they go about it all wrong. Rescuing is going to this place. You are saving a life 💜

We have stray dogs in our neighborhood fighting, bloody and wondering around our houses. We all have animals_dogs, cats, ducks. They basically said until the strays bite a person We our on our own. Smh, called them 3 days in a row. Went to the sherrifs office about the dogs they said they have a hard time with animal control too. Smh. Do your job and save our pets!

Was the worst experience I've ever had. Friday there was a cute 4month old shep mix for adoption. Went down to adopt her, and she was "out at an event". Ok no big deal, the lady told me to come back Saturday at 1pm -4pm. Well the shelter isn't even open at those hours. Went back today (Monday) and was told that she is a "rescue only" dog. Yet no one there (3 of them) could tell me exactly what that means or why I couldn't adopt her. One fat lady was on her personal cell phone the entire time, an old man had no idea they even had dogs there to adopt and had to go look at their website and eventually told me I'd just have to wait till the fat lady decided to get off her phone, and a younger fat man was an absolute dick. Wouldn't answer any questions I had just said all the dogs they had for adoption was in the room behind us.It was absolutely ridiculous the way this place is. If your gonna work at a shelter, at least make an attempt to adopt your dog's out instead of not giving a damn. And this is a VERY high kill shelter, they won't keep an animal longer than a week.

Most of the office/kennel staff are kind people and easily to deal with, although not the friendliest group! Though, I can understand why - this is a Kill Shelter and euthanize dogs weekly. The kennel/Shelter is generally clean and doesn't smell. The adoption fees are reasonable with a rebate for neuter and spay! Please help Save these poor animal weekly before the end of the day on Tauesday .🐶🚨

I contacted the staff via email and made an appt. for my two dogs to get their rabies shot. The shelter had a very reasonable cost for the rabies shot. I showed up at the appt. time and everything went smoothly. In just a few minutes I was on my way.

To a kitten over to see if they could adopt it out. The staff was unfriendly and rude. They told me that they could not take it and I asked why it didn't say that earlier. So she told me to set inside and hand the kitten over to the lady in the window. I was happy because who wouldn't want a cute 4 week old kitten. I explained that someone threw it out at my house and that I already had 6 cats and 2 dogs and couldn't keep it. She said fine looked at the girl behind the counter and said to euthanize it. It broke my heart needless to say it came back home with me. I will never go back to that place and they really need better staff.

PLEASE adopt these animals! I feel horrible after seeing the sad puppies and dogs in that rancid smelling room. I went to look for one to adopt, but I couldn’t even make it to the back kennels, the stench was so horrible. I chose to leave and I will come back another time. I know it is volunteer run, but I think some changes need to be made or they need paid staff to clean. Those poor dogs in the back won’t get adopted if no one can make it to their kennels before needing a fresh breath of air! :(

BEWARE-This shelter is about rescue group hoarders-NOT pets going to permanent homes-to the point of deceit. Staff are nice but, carefully disclose zero information about a rescue waiting for closing time or already contacted about the pet you have interest. Practices are back door for rescue groups anytime and 3-4 hours a day, 3 days a week for the public. You don’t have a chance-this is a prearranged front for rescue organizations. They get preference-not animals or the public. Atrocious!!

I have had a lot of contact with the officers at this facility over the past three years, especially the ladies at the front desk that assist with adoptions. They have been absolutely wonderful. I wish we had a no kill shelter but unfortunately we do not. I think a lot of people misunderstand that and expect them to provide more services like the S.P.C.A. In Wake County but they are a county run service that is primarily in place to help the public with animal abuse cases, nuisance animals, and potentially dangerous one. The staff there cares about animals, most of them have numerous pets of their own. If they have room, they will hold over animals from one week to another in order that they have more time to be adopted. I know people have had different experiences but I have to say I have honestly been impressed with the care I have seen shown to the animals as well as the public. They have a hard job that I couldn't do. I encourage you to go there and see for yourself.
