We had such fun here. The visitors center employee was incredible, being so sweet to our daughter. The trails are well maintained and very well marked. Bathrooms are clean and stocked. Parking was easy. The trails themselves had so much beauty! Loads of natural plants and such a nice shady walk around the lake. It was very laid back, not a lot of people. Excellent little day hike for us novice walkers. I would say if you are a little challenged with mobility, bring walking sticks as the leaves can be a little slick and shifty, but I've a disability and had no real trouble at all even on the moderate trail.

May be the best maintained and most scenic state park in the Southeast. It made for a great place to work, too.Note that the water is crystal clear so it shows the color of the sand perfectly. That part of the lake is shallow enough to wade out of substantial distance.Be sure to stop by the Ranger Station to see the skull of a whale found in the lake. It is 1.75 million years old and the only one found inland on the East Coast.Restrooms: Clean and well stocked.Dog-friendliness: Lots of friendly people walking their dogs.Picnic area: Heavy duty tables with benches. Some with covered pavilions. Lots of options for grilling or cooking out.

Great hike in Jan. 2024. Took the Lake Trail toward the dam & looped by the pier back to the visitor's center. Total about 4 1/2 Mike's. The staff was super friendly & welcoming. This would be a great place to camp & canoe in Jan. before it gets hot & buggy. Lots of local history & lore.

I love this State Park. The wooded areas have great walking trails. The swim area dock was just upgraded this summer and it's a quick walk from the parking area. I take my dog for long swims in summer weather since you don't have to deal with tides and rip currents. Clean restrooms at rangers station & camping sites available.

This is a beautiful gem hidden in south-eastern North Carolina. The view on the lake is breath-taking, the campsites are generously sized and the Park staff are second to none. My family and I enjoy visiting several times a year.Dog-friendliness: Easy trails to take your dog waking on through piney forest or on the boardwalks.Picnic area: Plenty of places to picnic.

Wonderful, very large lake. Visitor center at the State Park is great with a helpful staff. The 2 mile lake trail is an easy jaunt through the woods to a large pier. Just really nice!

Great state park, well kept trails, beautiful scenery. Hikes can range from a mile or two from up to 10 miles based on trail choice. Very buggy in the warmer months, don't forget bug spray!

Friendly park with beautiful views, boardwalks and great park rangers.Interesting facts shared in the visitor center and neat exhibits.Just outside the park are some wild alligators, so that added to the experience.

While a nice park, this one just hasn't lived up to all of the other NC State Parks I've visited. Maybe I'm missing something, but the long dock--while mostly stable--is in desperate need of repairs, and the trails aren't marked as well as I'd like. That said, wildlife was abundant and visible, and the water was super shallow and crystal clear. The location was perfectly chosen, but this park needs some more funding and some TLC before I can make the long drive back.

Default 3 stars cause its nature but the trails were so closed off by overgrowth they weren't safely walkable. Would love to come back to better kept trails!

Secluded, walk-in, primitive campsites, but it was right up our alley. We enjoyed a relaxing time at our lakeside campsite and running our dog tired on the beautiful trails.

Went during January and the park still had a lot to offer. The trails are kept nice (although part was closed off due to the mud from rain). I will definitely have to check it out during the summer. Beautiful lake.

Nicely kept trails and a clean informative rangers station. Park in the lot at the end of the road to cut off a couple miles of Lakeshore Trail and reach the dam easier.

Want to see an American alligator? How about a rookery of herons? Perhaps a scenic hike around the mysterious Carolina Bay lake, Lake Waccamaw? This is the park for you! Friendly rangers and park staff, clean facilities, and a great place for a picnic.

Beautiful and quiet. Wish there was a loop all around the lake but the trails are well kept. Careful in summer because of the biting and swarming black flies.

This lake is really cool! Shallow but has a unique habitat and clear water, but dark water. Also alligators in the canals!

Awesome!! The park is so cool. We learned from maintenance about the muscle only found here and about the labor day fun. We'll probably be back to see the alligators later this spring!! It was a great trip and we started our NC State Park Passport!! Let the adventure begin!!
