I can't wait to come back! I had such a wonderful experience here. Hiram and Mathew are excellent hosts with great recommendations for things to do in the area. Every meal I had was delicious, the property is gorgeous, and my massage was out of this world. I really enjoyed the library and watching the sun go down every day. As a woman traveling solo, I felt very safe and welcome here. I highly recommend Fire Mountain. I promise you will love it.Rooms: Clean, cozy, comfy bed.Nearby activities: Endless hikes and natural beauty. Upscale shops and fine dining nearby. Artisan groceries and delis and cafes. Wineries and breweries. Highlands outpost has a mountain coaster and snow tubing. Arts center, historical displays, and museums. There is so much to do and see.Safety: I felt very safe as a woman traveling alone.Food & drinks: The food was absolutely delicious! Get a dinner reservation! Your taste buds will thank you.

This stay would have garnered 4 or 5 stars if it wasn’t for the one or actually both bizarre acting men who run the place. The setting was nice but the owners were bananas and didn’t make us feel welcome. In fact they made us feel watched. And let me just say we are very normal looking and drive a nice car. Still there was an air of suspicion and other weird behavior. Example- the one gentleman was telling me I had to stick my dogs in a crate and made me sign a document that I would do so - basically gave me the Covid instructions instead of the updated policy. Thankfully a staff clarified it to me but it only was days later. Not so dog friendly if you ask me. I have 2 harmless little doodles. Terrible no existing wifi but we made the best of it as the surroundings were nice and some of the staff were kind. The blanket inside the duvet had a little blood stain from a previous guest. Things like that … we only stay at nice places and enjoy leaving good reviews but these folks kinda sucked. We are coming back in the summer and won’t be staying with them ever again. My poor husband who is the kindest person thought it was an absolute farce how these people behaved (in fairness mostly the one manager) and hated it. I gave it a shot based on the reviews and this time it didn’t work out. So beware.

My husband and I recently visited the Highlands area for the first time and were so amazed at the beauty and surroundings. We especially loved our stay at the Inn and would return. Our hosts were so gracious and attentive. Our daily breakfast was such a treat to look forward to each day and our dinner of fresh trout was so delicious. We especially loved sitting in the red adirondack chairs admiring the view and the fountain lights at night was such as spectacle. Thank you!

We had a magnificent time at Fire Mountain. Hiram is a warm and gracious host who is a wealth of knowledge. We were upgraded to the Laurel in the treehouse and saw many butterflies and bumble bees on the native azaleas and mountain laurels along the private boardwalk to our room. As the sun was rising were heard many different birds greeting the day from the hammock on the porch. We enjoyed chatting with Matthew on our walk and meeting their adorable dog Lilly. The breakfasts were excellent and Matthew made sure our meals were vegetarian. On our morning walk to the waterfall we saw wild turkeys, rabbits and stopped to pet the horse and mule.We felt the stress melt away as we watched the gorgeous sunsets while listening to the waterfall feature on the patio each night. We made the short drive to downtown Highlands and had an excellent meal at four65 thanks to Hiram’s recommendation. We also took in the beauty of Dry Falls just down the road from the Highlands. After another beautiful sunset on Saturday night we wandered down to the fire pit and listened to the frogs serenade us from the nearby pond. The grounds, restaurant and rooms are immaculate. An overall amazing experience. If you’re looking for a place to unplug and reset this is the place! We can’t wait to come back.

We just returned from our visit to Fire Mountain. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. Hiram and Matthew were wonderful hosts. Hiram gave us all the details of options for our short time in Highlands. Breakfast was perfect. The Air Spa was a wonderful experience and Anna was amazing. It was a great way to unplug, enjoy the fresh mountain air and gaze at amazing sunset views. A great way to spend a quick weekend for our anniversary. Only thing that was missing was more time to stay! Thank you for the wonderful hospitality. We will return!

My husband is recovering from an extended illness and we needed a place that offered peace and quite.....we found that place! One gift Fire Mountain gave us was "permission" to unplug and not feel bad about it!The grounds are immaculate, the accommodations were exactly like the pictures, and the owners are as unique as this wonderful space they've so lovingly created. From the informative check-in with Hiram to the delicious, perfectly portioned breakfasts from Matthew, to the wonderful soaking tub in our room...we couldn't have been more pleased with the attention to detail. Hiram greeted us each morning with a smile and engaged us in a discussion of what we had done the day before and what we had planned for the day. He offered great suggestions as he knows the area so well and that made our decisions much easier. We stayed in the Inn but they offer cabins and treehouses. I highly recommend the Red Thunder room in the Inn....it provided us with the most spectacular views of the mountains no matter the time of day but, the morning and evening views are magical! We also had a couples massage with a beautiful view and with top notch massage therapists! If you want to unplug and enjoy reconnecting with your soul and your soul mate...this is the place! We'll be back......

Just an amazing stay at Fire Mountain for our anniversary. This time we stayed at the Inn and like the cabins, it was immaculate, so comfortable and had all the amenities we needed. The grounds are so well taken care of with sitting areas and trails that really take advantage of the beautiful surrounding views. We had a delicious breakfast each morning in the dining area - such a serene setting. Owners care for every detail and were so helpful in helping us plan hikes, see waterfalls, visit local towns...etc. My wife and I agree that Fire Mountain is one of the most peaceful and relaxing places we've ever been to. See you folks again soon!

At first I have to admit I was a little skeptical because I was not able to find a lot of posted pictures of this place. After having the privilege of staying there last weekend with my husband, I completely understood the reason why. This past weekend was a complete rejuvenating experience. Matthew and Hiram and the Fire M. crew are delightful and the attention to detail is one of a kind. The food was exquisite and the whole breakfast experience as well. We were served fresh fruit and gourmet food cooked with products that were grown at Highlands, NC, how amazing is that? The property is simply breath-taking and magical. The trails the property have are great to go for a short walk after having breakfast. The room where we stayed at was extremely clean, there was always hot water, but most importantly it was so beautifully decorated and relaxing to be in. We slept with our screened sliding door open and was a magical experience waking up to the birds and morning mist smell. It is relatively close to downtown (approx 15-20 minutes- due to curvy roads, you'll see why). We highly recommend Fire Mountain Inn with our eyes closed, in fact, we are already planning to go back and every time we go to Highlands we will stay there and nowhere else. If you want to have a unique experience with amazing food and magical connection with nature this is the place to go!I have included some pictures for folks that are like me. I will not include a lot of them because I want you to experience what my husband and I experienced this past weekend.

My husband and I returned to Fire Mountain over the Thanksgiving weekend for a second getaway, this time with a best friend in tow. We were delighted that Galax cabin was available which we had enjoyed so much the first time around! Tunrning off the highway and up the steep road to Fire Mountain immediately reminded me that we wouldn't be just spending a couple of nights in a cabin, but we were on retreat.Hiram and Matthew have created such a peaceful mountaintop haven. From the accommodations to the cuisine to the Saturday night bonfire, we could not have asked for anything more. Thanks, guys! You will be seeing us again!

We stayed this past Wednesday thru Sunday. We stayed in hemlock with our 2 dogs. We absolutely loved the seclusion and relaxation we enjoyed while there. We loved the fireplace and used it throughout the day! We enjoyed talking with Nathan and Anna who work there and got an amazing history of the place and area and where to go exploring on the property. Brianne was wonderful and gave us a map of area hikes and we did several that were absolutely amazing. We were close enough to Highlands that we had dinner there each night and got some shopping done. If u r looking for a relaxing, secluded place that is in the middle of nature, this is it.

My husband and I made our first trip to Highlands, NC and selected Fire Mountain Inn for our accommodations, which was such a nice, relaxing experience. The views are incredible and the surroundings so peaceful and quiet (with the exception of the wonderful nature sounds!) We stayed in the Cloud Climber suite of the lodge and enjoyed the beautiful sunsets from our private front porch. The cool night air was so refreshing. Hiram and Matthew are the perfect hosts and are so responsive to any requests and they are incredibly resourceful regarding activities in the area (and anything else you need to know!) The food was amazing! We'll definitely be back!

Hiram and Mathew, Thank you for the beautiful stay and wonderful hospitality! The room was very clean and peaceful. But my favorite part was all of the detailed maps and suggestions Hiram shared to help make my day the best it could be. The food was excellent and the views spectacular! I pray you continue to be blessed as you offer this great retreat to others. ValRooms: So clean, comfortable, and quiet. It is a very special place.Nearby activities: There are many hikes & waterfalls nearby. Plus its an easy drive to downtown Highlands for restaurants & shopping.

My husband and I had a reservation for a long weekend to unwind at Fire Mountain. We did not end up staying (though we hope to eventually, the place seems amazing) but wanted to drop a quick review to say that Hiram corresponded very professionally via email and was sincere in helping us reach a satisfactory solution to the problem that ended up preventing us from staying here. Thanks to the folks at fire mountain for being kind and easy to work with.

From the personal welcome and unique and special touches, Matthew and Hiram have created an experience that fills the soul and your belly with zen delight! If you want to leave your everyday stressors behind and enjoy a cleansing, peaceful, inspiring and healthy retreat- then this is the place.Come informed, (read your welcome email) respect the process and surrender to the concept that makes Fire Mountain what it is. If you let yourself, you will be surprised and delighted throughout your stay and leave this place, as we have, refreshed and rejuvenated. We enjoyed fantastic day adventures - little known hikes (read few other humans) to waterfalls and gorgeous drives where “water” was the focus- all courtesy of our hosts deep knowledge of this gorgeous area. Our evenings were enjoyed on the deck under a blanket of stars and the fireflies did there best to twinkle just as brightly!Everything we ate (and drank) was so, so fresh, beautifully prepared and presented by Matthew in a perfect environment. Hiram creates and serves up delicious evening cocktails prior to dinner - I strongly recommend the “Fire Mountain Gin & Tonic! Everyone we came in contact with was kind, sincere and caring (including the other guests!) A quick note- As everyone in the service industry is experiencing- staffing has been difficult this year, but we never “felt” this during our stay. The standards and quality are high, exacting and are not compromised. The room we stayed in in the Inn was comfortable, bright and well appointed- the library was welcoming and so tempting. I would have spent more time there if the weather hadn’t been so perfect! There is so much else I could comment on- but don’t want to ruin the “surprise and delight” aspect of a stay here. I suggest you come and discover it for yourself. We can’t wait to return to for another delightful long weekend - maybe we will try a cabin- as soon as we can…. In the meantime the view of the mountains from the deck is burnt into my memory for a while…Many, many thanks Hiram and Mathew- stay well!

Recently, my wife and I had the pleasure of staying at Fire Mountain for 6 nights for a much needed escape from all of life's daily stressors. When deciding where to stay, we wanted to stay somewhere that we could not only reconnect with each other in luxury accommodations but also ground ourselves in nature. We found that Fire Mountain exceeded all of our expectations! From farm fresh cuisine, breathtaking views, on site nature trails, spa and most importantly award winning southern hospitality, it's a wonder why anyone would stay somewhere else. We will definitely return soon!

From beginning to end, you will have a wonderful experience with a great staff! Mathew and Hiram take care of you, just be sure to book at the restaurant (or any accommodations) in advance of your trip! You will miss out if you fail to reserve your spot, and the dinner is an absolute must (probably why it books so quickly)! The room was awesome and had a hot tub and a fireplace (so s'mores were had). There is no shortage of activities or hikes in the immediate area (10 mi). If you have any questions about the immediate area, just ask Mathew or Hiram and they will be sure to point you in the right direction and let you know what the "activity level" of the adventure would be. I would highly recommend Fire Mountain Inn to any of my friends/family looking for a getaway with one of the best views of the Highlands. Thank you for the amazing weekend! -M&M

Where should I begin our stay was so fabulous! I'll start at the unpaved drive up to the mountain top. It's part of the experience, go slow & enjoy. You will absolutely ENJOY the breathtaking mountain views once up. You'll enjoy views from every direction. The grounds are very well kept, our room was very clean, the breakfast was phenomenal with very homemade specialties & the views are exceptional from the Fire + Water restaurant. Easy check- in, everything explained to us & maps provided about local attractions that are close to the Inn. Very chill, relaxed, adult mountain top getaway. All Covid regulations were being followed by the sweetest staff. Go and quietly enjoy yourself & experience a true mountain top getaway.

We absolutely loved our stay at Fire Mountain! Hiram and Mathew were warm, welcoming and full of great suggestions on what to do. Mathew’s breakfast creations were delicious every morning and became one of the highlights of our trip. We so appreciated all the thorough local information Mathew gave us when we first arrived - maps of hikes and lots of restaurant recommendations. We also appreciated how seriously they took Covid 19 protocols - guest tables were staggered at breakfast, masks required when walking around in dining & common areas, and hand sanitizer everywhere. We stayed in Red Thunder and were enthralled by the gorgeous view across the mountains (sunset rooms for the best view!), and the freestanding tub was amazing for long soaks. It was a 15-20min easy drive to downtown Highlands. Be sure to check out the waterfall on the property, it is magical. Would highly recommend staying at Fire Mountain!

The tranquility of Fire Mountain gave us an opportunity to relax, enjoy the beautiful views, and just take a break. We were greeted with information of the surrounding area and diverse options for our personal interests. The breakfasts were creatively presented and delicious, while the interactions with the hosts demonstrated how dedicated they are to keeping Fire Mountain a uniqueexperience for their guests.

My husband and I just stayed here on our honeymoon, and we loved it! We stayed in the Blue Moss cabin and really enjoyed the fabulous sunsets, privacy, and extra large jacuzzi tub in the cabin. We were also glad we added on breakfast because Matthew was a great chef and cooked up a wholesome meal to get us started on each day we were here. Not only was he a great chef, Matthew was also so very friendly and helpful. I think the most surprising bonus about our stay here was that Matthew helped us map out our route for each day, and that was really what allowed us to make the most of our short time here. He knows the area extremely well and has great ideas for driving routes that maximize your time and the number of beautiful sights in the area that you can stop by. Be sure to ask for hiking recommendations, too, as he recommended a less-trafficked place that turned out to be exceptional. Would definitely recommend Fire Mountain Inn and already have to a family member. :)

We had an excellent time at Fire Mountain! The scenery and sunsets of the Blue Ridge Mountains were breath taking. We stayed in the one of the cabins and had time to reset as a family - no TV - instead time to talk, read, and relax. We had a wonderful fulfilling breakfast prepared at the resort and were ready for a day of local hikes. The hosts Hiram and Matthew couldn't have been any better with local knowledge and suggestions for nearby activities (eateries, hiking, scenic drives, etc...). We cannot wait to return!

We knew we wanted a trip to southwestern North Carolina close to Highlands and Cashiers but were undecided on where to stay. After looking at local hotels and VRBO properties we happened across Fire Mountain's website. We called and spoke to Hiram who was very informative and helpful, and we were convinced to give Fire Mountain a try. What a great decision! The property is well maintained and there are beautiful views everywhere you turn. The accommodations are rustic yet comfortable and clean with lots of amenities to help you unwind, relax, and take in the scenery. The staff is friendly and always ready to fulfill your requests. Hiram and Mathew work tirelessly day in and day out to ensure your complete satisfaction. The breakfasts were just right served inside or outside and always with relaxing music and breathtaking views. We had one dinner at Fire and Water which was delicious and Mathew packed us a lunch to take on a day long romp through the mountains. Overall, our stay was incredible. Highlands and Cashiers are a short drive for guests wanting to shop or dine. After a long day of exploring it was always great to return to Fire Mountain to refresh and relax. Congratulations to Hiram and Mathew for putting together an experience that was second to none. We will definitely be coming back soon.

Our stay at Fire Mountain was truly like none other. From the moment we got there, we were welcomed by lush greenery, terrific views, and the friendliest staff. Hiram and Matthew had a ton of knowledge about restaurants, activities, and scenery to help us plan our days.We stayed in the Laurel treehouse which had an excellent view off the deck with a hammock for relaxing, and it’s own private walkway entrance. It was the perfect size for the two of us.We enjoyed the gourmet breakfast every morning, each day was different and truly delicious. We also had a picnic lunch made for us one day that had an amazing BLT and vegetarian sandwich. Would definitely recommend that option if you’re looking to have a nice picnic lunch while out enjoying some of the scenery or activities.Overall it was amazing. The serene getaway we were looking for, but just a short drive from Highlands and other local attractions.

This is the perfect couples retreat. We are already planning our return trip. Everything from our room, to the grounds, to breakfast was perfect. The Inn is super clean and the ambiance is very relaxing. Last but not least, the staff was amazing. They were so polite and very helpful when we had questions about hikes and places to see with my pregnant wife. It was an incredible stay.

We first went to Fire Mountain two years ago and returned this past weekend. The descriptions on the website were right-on and staying there was beyond expectation. We stayed in the Blue Moss cabin both times and loved it. It was clean and equipped with everything we needed. The property was well kept and the views spectacular. The food served in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner was delicious, as was the picnic they prepared for us for our daytrip. Hiram and Matthew were both gracious hosts and made us feel welcome.I think Fire Mountain may not be for everyone. However, if you are looking for a place to escape to the mountains for a few days of peace and quiet in a beautiful setting with a touch of simple elegance, it is the place for you. For us, it was exactly what we wanted.

My husband and I spent 5 nights at Fire Mountain! The views were amazing! It was so peaceful, and relaxing. We loved leaving our screen doors open to the cool breeze in the middle of June! I loved reading in the hammock on the porch. The breakfast and dinner were amazing! The ingredients were super fresh ! We enjoyed eating while enjoying the view of the mountains, and birds. We went on some hikes and walks right on the property and Matthew gave us some wonderful waterfalls to hike to around town. We look forward to our next visit!
