Since this is the only restaurant on the main road, I can see why people have no other option, but to enlighten this establishment. Stopped in to check it out since it said barbecue. Since nothing on the menu for barbecue looked even remotely appetizing, we opted for the chicken fried steak. Please be aware that if you’re hungry, this establishment does portion control with toddler plates that section off your food. They do a great job of not overfilling each compartment and making sure that there’s only enough there to fill the spot allotted. A small portion of potatoes, a small portion of vegetables, and so on. The main course, which you would think for a chicken fried steak would be you know fill up half the plate only came out like four bites and we’re obviously frozen and cut into shapes. You will receive two of these small pieces, a small portion of mashed potatoes and a small portion of vegetables all for the glorious price with a drink of $18.. bon appétit🤦‍♂️🤡

Friendly and quick service. Good prices to match. Supplemental desserts at the register put icing on the cake for a great meal. Plenty of (truck) parking outside. Easy to see from the road... and if you have second thoughts about stopping in, there's a Turnaround right out front. Enjoy the pics!

This place is about 1.5 hours from me. I found this place because for the first time I wanted Carolina bar b q. It did not disappoint. Wife and I went on food tour for our 22nd wedding anniversary. 4 stars because I think every bar b q place should have a sampler platter of their product. I would pay a minimum of $25 for a sample platter. They also offered fried apple pie, I never heard off this and my taste buds started dancing wanting to taste it. Unfortunately they did not have anymore fried apple pie. So I guess I have to visit Tarheel Bar B Q again. Not only for the fried apple pie, I will try something different. When I find an awesome place I want to try just about everything. Wife ordered pork bar b q sandwich with fried apples. I had the pork bar q dinner with macaroni and creamed potatoes This place is on side the road and is a good place to stop for awesome food. The price of the food is also very reasonable. I also purchased their carolina bar b q sauce. My home grilling is about to take off.

I went here with my family and it took forever for our food to come out, almost 30 minutes. It was busy but not crazy. When our food came out, my flounder portion was maybe 1.3 oz once I took the skin off, which was inedible. I was completely shocked. I've never seen such a small flounder filet in my life. It was over cooked too. My husband order the bbq, and that came out in a MASSIVE portion, but it was unfortunately minced so fine it had the texture of cat food. It wasn't very good either. We definitely won't be going back or recommending it to anyone.

I’ve been here on twice but won’t be going back. I normally order the bbq sandwich and fries and I’ve also had their fried fish. Today I order a 1/2 chicken with bbq sauce on the side thinking I was getting real bbq that’s been smoked or grilled. Instead I got bland chicken that had no seasoning, no flavor whatsoever. I called the lady to see what happened to the seasoning on my chicken and she told me they bake their chicken and put bbq sauce on it with no seasoning. This was the blandest chicken I’ve ever seen in my life. It had no flavor, didn’t look good and didn’t taste good. You can’t cook food, put bbq sauce on it and call it bbq. That’s robbery if you ask me.

If I could give this restaurant no star's I would. We ordered (2) barbecue sandwiches, and a hamburger. Our barbecue was cold, no flavor, loaded with mayo, and disgusting. My daughter's burger had hair in it. And let's not talk about the fries, a total mess. Save your money, and go somewhere you can get not only great food, but also fewer hateful stares.

We visit here whenever we are heading down through North Carolina. Typically, it is pretty good food. For this trip, however, we were disappointed with the good quality. That included the BBQ, fries were over cooked, and the sweet potatoe casserole...well, I simply was not able to eat it. We will try it one more time. But, as always, the employees were very friendly.

2 stars only because the entire staff was friendly and the service was good. The food on the other hand needs some drastic help. With BBQ in their name you'd expect them to be able to handle pulled pork, but it was some of the driest I've ever eaten. Even the BBQ sauce that they offered on the side wasn't enough to rehydrate this meat. The butter beans were bland and had zero seasoning to them. The roll was from a package as were the sweet potato fries (best part of the meal). Sorely disappointed and I don't understand the other reviews that rate it so highly.

Staff was friendly and attentive to needs. Have never had fried Mac and cheese. It was awesome. Will definitely go back just for that again. Food pricing was cheap but not lacking in flavor or portions.

We've come here periodically for years now. Our server today was awesome! The food is always good but today my potato salad that is usually awesome seemed store bought maybe. Idk but it was runny and weird. The macaroni salad was made with what looked like kraft Mac n chs pasta. The fried chicken was fantastic though.

I absolutely love this place. It's my favorite place to eat in Gates north Carolina. They are so friendly and you have NOT lived untill you have had their minced BBQ. And those corn nuggets to literally die for!! I have tried 90% of their menu in the 8 months I've lived in Gates and i have never been disappointed. We usually get 4 plates and lay it out buffet style.

The staff was friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. Would never get BBQ from there again. It was dry and lacked flavor, also their home sauce left much to be desired. The hush puppies were too dense, tasted like they were from frozen. The slaw was ok, the home fries were good, the fries were good, the fried apples were crispy and pretty good for a frozen off the truck product. I would like to go back at some point and try their fried chicken, but didn’t have enough time for that today.
