Old school hotel, didn't arrive in time to be checked in so my keys were left in an envelope. The porch is wonderful, room was clean, nothing fancy kind of like a hunting/fishing lodge. What was cool was even though there was no coffee in the morning the gas station across the street is owned by the same guy and he gave me free coffee bc I stayed at the hotel. I loved the old school vibe and country trust would 100% stay again.

Stayed with my kids for an impromptu road trip.We could have stayed on the Outer Banks in Roanoake Island but luckily we stayed here.So many people review that the owners are warm and accommodating. They speak truth. We could not have better hostesses. The rooms themselves are spare, basic and sufficient for a peaceful night. They are on the small side but this is a blessing because it makes them easy to cool and have a good night's rest which you will be thankful for because pf the humidity and heat of the surrounding area. There is a canal nearby where crab and fish can be easily caught. So easily that even we did it, our first try.A key feature of the hotel is that locals will stop by to eat and chat. This is not to be missed. It will make you evening, especially if you are tired and just want to unwind and jaw a bit.

My wife and I made a quick trip to see the last of the Tundra Swans on Lake Mattamuskeet before they headed north. Hotel Engelhard is about 20 minutes away. The rooms are very comfortable and very clean. The host and hostess are very nice and welcoming. Engelhard is a working fishing/shrimp/oyster town. Take your camera. There's a Red & White grocery store across from the Hotel. We enjoy "down east" for its big skies, friendly people and its sparseness -- think opposite of Myrtle Beach. The hotel owners couldn't have been nicer! We will stay there again.

I am leaving a 1 star only because the room was ok and the pizza was good.I stay there on January 23,2022. The manager or owner never show up like they said he would. There was people smoking pot right near our room the smell came in our room it was so bad I went to tell one of the ladies that was working the Cafeteria she said she would let him know but never heard anything from either of them. The lady did tell me he was supposed to be there in the morning but he never show up. I won't stay again.

Engelhard is in the middle of nowhere, and it was WONDERFUL! The hotel was so relaxing! Drake and his great dog Hank made sure we were comfortable. The fishing in the canal, that is in front, well basically all thru town, was so much fun. My husband caught a flounder! Drake said that he doesn't know of anyone who has done that. I plan on going back when my husband goes bear hunting and just relax and fish!

Really friendly hostess and host. This is and older building but our bathroom was recently updated and the room was very clean. Most importantly this hotel was very quiet allowing our group to get a good night's sleep. My home base next time I visit Hyde County....

Good place for basing a birding trip out of. Lake Mattamuskeet has a terrific variety of birds year round. There are *very* few other options in this area. The owners are very sweet and interesting and added a star to my review. The building is old and rustic. Food in the area is extremely limited. Plan on taking some of your own. Even supermarkets are scarce. Birds however, are plentiful :)

Hotel Engelhard's hostess and host are the reason for the 5 stars. I can't remember their names, but I remember their sweet hospitality. When we walked in, our hostess noticed that I was having trouble walking. She gave me a bottle of water and Tumeric to help with the inflammation in my knee joints. It worked! It's still working weeks later. Our room was clean and had a microwave and fridge. The bathroom was recently updated. We didn't eat breakfast at HE, but one morning our hostess brewed us a delicious pot of coffee. My friend and I had the pleasure of sitting with our hostess for coffee and conversation. It was an enjoyable experience that still makes me smile. During our stay there were a few thunderstorms and power outages. When we came back late one night, both our host and hostess greeted us on the front porch with a flash light for us to keep with us overnight. It was such a personal touch that I won't soon forget. I have stayed at HE a handful of times. Each time I fall in love with this "bed and breakfast ". We'll be back for another stay before the summer ends and maybe two more before the end of the year. If you're looking for 5-star luxury, you won't find that, but if you're looking for something more valuable, you'll find great people at Hotel Engelhard.

We stayed here during a bike tour around the Outer Banks. Ursula was incredibly accommodating and let us park our van there during our trip. Rooms were basic, clean and affordable. They had the best egg sandwich we've had in a while. Nearby Alligator River Wildlife Refuge is a treat.

I would like to thank Drake and his dog Hank for the stay and hospitality. My boys and a couple of my buddies spent the weekend duckhunting Lake Mattamuskeet. Drake recently purchased hotel Engelhard and wish him the best. I would highly recommend staying here if you’re in the area. One of my boys left his drivers license and he was kind enough to mail it back to him.Thank you Drake for your hospitality and we plan on seeing you soon.Chris Smiles

Went looking for a house in North Carolina and got lost. Ended up late night at the hotel. What a pleasant experience. If you're looking for big modern Holiday Inn or something you're going to the wrong place. But if you're looking for a touch of what hotels used to be like. This is the place. The owners are fantastic and we very much enjoyed our stay.

5 stars means I liked my stay very much. Amenity-wise, it’s a 3 star place. The owners are very nice and went way above and beyond to make my stay great. The bed was super! I think I will be back this way next summer and make it my home base for visiting all sorts of places around here!

Very spartan accommodations, does have a kitchen style restaurant. The wifi is adequate for checking email but is borderline for streaming depending on where the room is located in the building. Engelhard is basically in the middle of nowhere and lodging choices are very limited pretty much an hour in any direction. If you don't mind basic lodging then it should fill the bill, but don't expect too much.

This is a great place to stay if you are going to be in the area. There are few, if any, other options. It is an old throwback place, totally authentic. The owners are very nice. The rooms are spartan. This place has the kind of charm you can't create artificially at any price. Some people, however, will be put off by the old-fashioned spartan accommodations.

Great place to stay. Owners are wonderful people, as are the locals. Taught their grandson how to tune a guitar while we were there.
