A thousand times more convenient than going to Lowe's or Home Depot, especially if you live close by and even if you don't. They have most things I need and someone to help me find them. Lumber is much easier than at the big box stores: you simply tell them what you want and then have it loaded directly into your car or truck at the warehouse. Plus it's a small business so profits stay here in town.

We've used Fitch for several projects in our remodel: first, interior doors (made it easy!) and now exterior door replacements. Bill is huge resource for us and made the entire experience as seamless as possible. Door orders are very detail oriented, and Bill was incredibly helpful through out every step and was patient with us in making sure the order was complete and correct. He kept us informed and also made sure we had literally everything we needed for a successful project. The results were outstanding (house looks great and the doors are beautiful!), and the delivery/install was painless . Already on to the next project we will source from them.We have lots of resources/options in the area we can choose from, we continue to use Fitch because of their service and quality. The staff at Fitch were so incredibly helpful when I found myself having to replace all the door locks to my house. Not only did they help me explain how to get the locks out, they expedited the new key making process when they saw how stressed I was. Love this place.

I am a contractor and went here to purchase hardwood for a woodworking project. Nice selection of odds and ends in the store, however upon enquiring about the purchase of hardwood I was told that I couldn't pick out the wood I wanted for changing reasons. The first was safety issues(you pick your own lumber out at Lowe's)the second was he had one guy that would have to pull out wood for me to see it. Honestly sounded like he was lazy and didn't want to walk outside. Kinda misleading with the company name "lumber and hardware". Thanks Fitch lumber and hardware! saved me hundreds of dollars today and missed out on potentially thousands in sales because I buy hardwoods quite frequently. Will continue taking my business to capital city lumber where I can actually see the product I intend to buy.

I purchased a few beautiful Marvin windows and patio doors from Fitch and they offered incredible service throughout the entire process. Bill helped me with a dozen iterations on my dimensions and order. Not only was the service great, but this is the reason why you order from a family-owned local business: When I had a small issue with the doors (not Fitch's fault), one of the co-owners (Fitch family member) **came to my house** and helped me to figure out how to make it right. A++ experience.

We've been shopping at Fitch Lumber since we moved to Chapel Hill in 1975 and have always been satisfied customers -- top quality goods and excellent service. In 2020 we replaced our deck, purchasing the materials at Fitch Lumber. The finished project is outstanding, and visitors always comment on the gorgeous, functional metal and cable railing. When we needed to replace a door, of course, we started at Fitch Lumber. Bill Bohuslaw educated us on what we needed to know about outside door replacement, ensured we got exactly the materials we needed, provided us with a list of installers, and arranged delivery. When the door was installed this week, everything the installer needed was here, and he was able to get the job done quickly and efficiently. This saved us a significant amount of money. Clearly, we will be repeat customers at Fitch Lumber.

Since we were ordering windows that match those that had been ordered by the builder of our house through Fitch Lumber 4 years previously, he even searched through records of archived orders to get the exact details for us. I have been working with Bill Bohuslaw at Fitch Lumber on my current home repair project and it has been a really great experience. Our project has been successful, and I credit this in large part to Bill's advice and guidance as we were making some key decisions and ensuring that measurements were 100% correct BEFORE placing an order. The project consisted of a door replacement (we went with Thermatrue fiberglass door with two sidelights and it looks awesome), and 8 window sash replacements. There are so many ways things could have gone wrong, and instead, everything went right. Thanks Bill and Fitch - it's been great having a more personal, customer-focused experience that the big box stores simply can't provide.

Waited for their woodshop to respond to email for quote for 2 weeks, only for them to tell me that they have no "manpower" to do anything these days. So, if you want any woodwork, they are no longer the place.PS: It's even more disappointing to see you reply to this review in 10 minutes, which just shows there was capacity to respond to my emails for the woodshop two weeks ago.

Recently we received our windows! For our new house!I’m writing this to share my experience of purchasing windows through the Fitch Lumber and Hardware.We placed order on December 2021. Bill Bohuslaw (windows and doors department) was very helpful with all necessary information that I was looking for my best decision regarding the Marvin windows and doors. He is really know the subject! I’m very picky customer (in good way I think:), so I had a zillion questions and couple of times even changed my mind regarding my order.Bill was very patient, polite and professionally accurate in time matter during our couple of weeks communication. He was contacted the manufacturer (not ones) to clarify a few things for me. He even ordered a small sample of new window to help me with my detailed construction plan.He worked hard trying to place order for us before manufacturer’s price went up.He literally saved us hundreds (if not thousands) dollars.Bill was very helpful during delivery process as well. Also, I’d like to thank guys in operation department-Joe(manager), Brian and Ryan (drivers). Delivery was easy and smooth.I plan to purchase with Fitch Lumber more components for my new construction. I would definitely recommend Fitch Lumber and Bill Bohuslaw for anyone who is looking for meticulously professional help with windows and doors shopping.

This multi-generational Hardware store might almost belong on a Tour of Chapel Hill. The people are generally nice and they have a bit of everything. When I need something at last minute (On a weekday) this is often better than LOWES or Home Depot. But they compete on convenience not price.

I walked in yesterday with a broken door handle. The handset was long out of warranty. Within a few hours, Bill had diagnosed the problem, called me, offered me a free spare part, and told me how to fix it to avoid spending hundreds on a replacement handset. My door was safe and secure by nightfall. He really CARED about my sense of safety with a broken door. Service, compassion, standing behind what they sell. Wish I could give them 10 stars out of 5!

I had an excellent experience buying lumber from Fitch. The order was delivered quickly, the lumber was excellent, and the couple of pieces that either had (minor) cracks or were damaged during unloading were replaced the same day I notified them on the phone. All in all I warmly recommend them over the big box store.

Good for lumber and hardware. Limited selection of plumbing repair parts. Somebody should look into to fixing the driveway entrance.. almost flipped my truck over turning in slowly. The service here makes up for any inconvenience though.

I'm always about supporting local businesses over large stores and have always used this store in the past but my experience today was very disappointing.I purchased plywood sheets which required 4 cuts in total. There was no mention of a charge when I placed my order. I noticed an extra $20 charge on my total and enquired. Told that's the shop charge for cutting...at which point I said a charge was never mentioned. No apology or form of rectifying the issue. Told it was 20 minutes work to make 4 cuts. Come on!! I could've done it quicker with a hand saw.Not being transparent about additional charges is disgraceful but to think it's justifiable to charge 20 minutes labour to make 4 cuts is outright robbery.

This place is a classic for a very good reason. If you were giving grades to a business, this one would get A+. Great selection of hardware and lumber, excellent customer service and very reasonable prices that sometimes beat the big box stores. Today I needed a specific size of 1/2 " plywood, and it was created in their shop on the spot where I waited 2 minutes, and then put in my car for me. That's what I mean by great customer service!Fitch's is very convenient in Carrboro and I always want to buy local when I can.

I had a window that I purchased at Fitch lumber years ago that I have been unable to lock. I spoke with Bill on the phone and he really went above and beyond the call of duty and fixed the window for me immediately. I was expecting to have to wait days/weeks for a window replacement. This is, quite simply, the best hardware store I've ever been to. Let's start with the staff: everyone who works here understands pretty much every element of hardware. And everyone is eager to help and has useful advice that makes figuring out what you really need easy.Then there's the selection: once or twice I've gone to Lowes thinking I'll have more choice or find a better price on what I'm looking for. In all cases I've gone back to Fitch and found that I should have just started there in the first place.And let me speak to some of the more negative comments below: never have I ever experienced a lack of courtesy from the people in this store because I'm not a professional builder. Quite the opposite. Instead, I've had salespeople spend long amounts of time helping me figure out purchases that were under five dollars.Even my dog loves Fitch. The cashiers keep a bin of dog biscuits behind the counter.

Fitch Lumber and Hardware is a locally owned store that has been in business for years in Carrboro. One of the reasons for that is their knowledgeable, friendly staff. I also love that the store holds events for children and for the community. I always leave there feeling good. I highly recommend a visit!

Fitch Lumber is great. We've used them to supply windows for our home and windows and doors for our office condos. We did a lot of research on where to buy windows and talked a lot of people before we found Fitch. They're straightforward and don't make you sit through an aggravating sales pitch like we had with some other companies. Fitch's customer service is excellent and their prices are reasonable. Fitch is great for someone who is looking for value and not just the cheapest price.

I have had mixed experiences here in the years I’ve lived in Carrboro. At one point, I actually swore never to go back because I went in to get a key copied and the person who “helped” me could not have been more unpleasant. But after about two years of avoiding the place because of that experience, I found myself in possession of some leftover wood from a family member’s project, and not much experience building anything… so on a downtown walk, I stopped by the Lumber side for inspiration. I was nervous of interacting with employees because of my prior experiences, but someone I didn’t recognize from previous years (I believe his name was Lee) approached me so politely that I let my guard down and told him my situation. I told him I had all this wood that was too good to just burn, and I really wanted to try to build something simple to start with. After talking over ideas for a while, we landed on floating wall shelves, since I could manage those with the materials and tools I was comfortable with. Lee wrote down easy-to-follow instructions for me on paper, and the next day I tried them out. Everything went well and now I have perfect extra shelving in my bathroom for all my little bits and pieces of makeup and stuff. The whole thing was so pleasant that now I want to try something else a little more elaborate, and I will definitely go to Fitch Lumber for help and supplies… especially since that particular employee provided such a positive and helpful experience.

Fitch is what I want in a Hardware Store. Quality goods and helpful staff, even directing me elsewhere at times if they don't sell what I need. They have really risen to the occasion to keep the community safe during Covid, which only made me more of a fan.
