We adopted our puppy from Pender Humane and had nothing but a wonderful experience. Maria helped with our application, kept me up to date on all current vet visits/shots and made a home visit with our new puppy to make sure it was a good fit. Maria and her staff genuinely love and care for every single animal that they house. It shows in how well they are treated and trained. Working in a shelter is not for the faint of heart and anyone that gives their time to these animals in need is special. Thanks to Maria and all her staff for a happy, healthy new member of our family. She is so loved!

Went to ask for assistance for dog food. I'm disabled and would rather get help with food for my emotional support dog than to EVER surrender her or have her not eat properly. The website says they close at noon, but the woman came to the door and said we had to come back at noon. She didn't even ask why we were there. She just spouted off that we had to come back and shut the door and walked off. If she was being honest then the website needs to be changed. If she's not being honest then shame on her!! My boyfriend called prior to our trip from Currie and she told him they would be open until noon.

The people working there are not there for the dogs. One lady said to come in and we could meet the dogs, another girl like on her teens told us they were closed, I explained to her that the other lady told us we could have five minutes to see the dogs, and she said no, if you don’t have an appointment we are closed. We explained that we drove over an hour to come meet some of the dogs, and she said there was nothing she could do. That’s very sad, she just denied a dog the possibility of finding a home.

Spoke to a women yesterday that moved my appointment up to today at 9. The manager said the earlier the better. So i show up at 9 and MARIA kicked me out and said she wouldn’t let me in till 11. I said i had an appointment she said oh well. On the door it says hours vary today, not opens at 11. If you wanted to be treated rudely sure go here. I’m concerned how the animals are treated. Terrible place.

Today was our adoption day with Rylee, such a sweet dog. She was obviously well cared for at Pender County Humane Society. She spent a couple of months there before we found each other. My family is very grateful for Maria and her team. The entire adoption experience was wonderful!

Absolutely amazing place! We recently fell in love with and adopted Drako… now Maverick! We couldn’t be more in love! Maria was so great with communication and drove all the way out to Wilmington to make a meet and great/home inspection work around our work schedules/ our complex managers schedule! PCHS truly is a great place and did such an amazing job with our sweet boy! You can really see how much they care and love their animals! All our interactions with the staff there has been nothing but pleasant! And we will forever be grateful for them❤️

I have not yet been able to take the cat I want in. Is a wild cat. They provide all for you to fix, give shots and they return the pet in 3 days. If there is an adult female or male. They provide the needed surgery. At no cost to Pender county residents. This, keeps the animal population controlled. You can keep the animal or put it back in the wild but at least they're not multiplying. I feed 3 cats and I am trying to catch the mom and kitty so she does not get pregnant again. All this information was shared and I got advise over the phone. They do try.I know they may sound rude at times but try to understand, sometimes they are short handed and really cannot give you the exclusivity you get in a private clinic. They are providing a service to protect cats and dogs.To military personnel. I am a veteran and a resident. Do not take a negative attitude. Please, look at the big picture. If you get transferred, you may or may not consider the fact that you might not be able to take your pet. That means that pet will suffer the loss of a family. Not every service member takes the time to turn them back. They just leave them behind, homeless. Trust me, I see it often. There job is protecting the animals. Thank you.

We are so happy that we chose to adopt from PCHS! The owners are very quick at responding back to questions. It is very clear that they care for their animals. We just adopted a kitten. We got to meet her and the other kittens in a timely manner. The gentleman at the shelter was super knowledgeable and helpful. It was a very thorough adoption process with very thoughtful questions about providing a good quality of life for the animal. All of the staff we have had interactions with were very nice. We are so thankful for PCHS for finding out kitty and giving her a forever home.

The Pender County Humane Society is a place dedicated to helping animals, however, their definition of "good home" is skewed. My fiance and I went to look at some puppies there last week. We were asked to submit an application to see if we would qualify for a puppy. The questions were related to our home, lifestyles, etc. We both have full time jobs; he is military and I work from home. We own a fairly large home with a large yard and a very pet friendly neighborhood. We are completely able to provide food, medicine, shelter, and love to the puppy! After reviewing our application, we were denied solely on the fact that my fiance is military. We were told that it is "not good for the dogs". We were completely shocked as we can provide better than most of the people in the area of the shelter! The people seem to be nice but I could not be more disappointed in the application process. We want our family to grow just like any other and are so disappointed that, because of his choice to serve our country, we are not able to adopt from this Humane Society. The lack of respect for our military could not be more disgusting.

I just tried to adopt a puppy and put in an application for her. However, when I went to follow up on the application, the woman told me that there was already an application for her and she was scheduled for a home visit, which no one told us when we put our application down. As if that wasn't bad enough, she proceeded to tell me that since her visit was with someone who has previously adopted from them, they would choose them over us.How is that fair? If the puppy already had an application down with someone you were already going to give it to, you need to say that. I have spent the past week waiting to hear back and puppy proofing my house to make it the perfect home for her and instead, I get a slap in the face. Yes, I may not have adopted from them before, but I have had dogs my whole life and would've given that puppy a great life. All they had to do was say, sorry, she's already had an application put down for her. Then I wouldn't haven't gotten my hopes up that I'd be bringing her home with me. I am absolutely crushed that they would do this.So my advice to you, if you are looking at a puppy and want to put an application down, double, triple and quadruple check that no one else has put an application down, because they will not tell you that. Save yourself from the heartache.

If you are military don't even bother! Any military personnel in a deployable status (virtually everyone) can not adopt. My wife and I were excited about possibly adopting one of their dogs but were turned away over a letter that does not exist. I advise any military personnel to not consider this place. They lost a chance of having one of their dogs adopted and, I hope they know they lost countless adoption opportunity with the military community.

We just tried to adopt a dog from here. We were able to visit, play with, and get attached to one before we were told that we couldn't adopt him. I am a stay at home mom and but because my husband is in the military and is deployable we were denied. It would have been nice to know before we got attached.

Went today to look at a dog. 1. You Need An Appointment to look! 2. Must do paperwork 1st? So they need your life history before you can look at an animal to see if you might want that animal? Drove an hour and was turned away. Said did not need or want any animal from this facility ever!!!!

My dog Libby came from PCHS. She's a wonderful addition to our family! She was well taken care of and they informed us up front that she had a skin allergy that would need lots of treatments. She's worth every dollar though! A few years later I found a stray on the side of the road and took her home with me. I tried to find a home myself without any luck. I didn't have a fence to keep her in and didn't have the time to house train, so I called PCHS. It was hard to leave her there... In just a few days I had become really attached, but they were so kind and knowledgeable that I felt much better about leaving her there. Plus, I can go visit her until she finds her forever family! :)

This was rude to me when i filled out f an application for a spay/neuter valchure just because i put down 0% income. She was reading over it as she walked away and turned around real quick clearly offended/discusted and was like you have no income!? Umm thats what i said. Am i suppose i lie and say i do? I was like look i have no job and someone is gonna pay for this for me. I wish i would of paid full price and went to a vet clinic because the clinic they use performs cat neutering procedures on male dogs where they leave there wound on the BOTTOM of the sack COMPLETELY open so where ever they sit or what they sit on can very possibly get inside and theydo not give you antibiotics to take home. That is cape fear spay & neuter. The surgeon that looked over my dogs file after we took him there after the procedure from the clinic told us that this was how they usually neuter male cats not dogs but it is more uncommon than common but it also should not of been left open!!! They werent too happy about it!

Dont get me wrong, I think it's great that their helping other animals who need shelter, but I think they could use more donations of animal food and accessories. It's sad to say, but if you need a bag of dog food you can't depend on them to have it, you have to drive to Wilmington in order to get some help which is sad and hard for the people who reside here in Pender County. And if you have a stray that needs surrendering they will not accept them from anyone other then animal control which I learned is not always available during the day when needed. I just think there should be more services for people with pets from what I see in the short time I have been here. Between all the strays I see around town and the post of people looking for food to feed their fur babies cause their trying desperately not to give them up or let them go, there really should be some kind of solution they can come up with that Benefits everyone. Even if it means asking someone who's looking for help with food to donate some of their time to help these places

The only thing I have to say is there “LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE “ they were helpful but extremely RUDE. Which is sad because I Work at veterinarian Hospital. The lady in charge NEEDS MORE training. No need to be rude and cut people off while there talking regardless the situation !!!!! It’s CALLED MANNERS

Not bad only complaint was when we got there after a 2 hour drive the person we were waiting for wasn't there yet so they told us we have to wait outside in the rain until the person got there, after that long drive the kids didn't want to sit 8n car and wait so needless to say everyone got into a bad mood
