got two discus here for 20$ each and they have been great however I bought a snail from the store the next week for 10$ and it died almost instantly in my tank, also when i did more research about the snail it seems like it wasn't going to get even close to what the guy said it would. also if the owner sees this review can you tell me when you are getting elephant nose fish back in stock?

Regular at this store because of my pet’s food. Employees are friendly, however there’s one employee (not sure if its the owner) who always charges me extra compared to the other times I go. I went in and asked for food items for my pet and he only put in a handful, charged me the price, then said if he was missing some he’ll give it to me on my next visit. Why even charge me same price if you know you most likely didn’t give me what I paid for ? He even charges me for a bag which I didn’t even ask for. I understand America runs on money but to overcharge everytime I go is unpleasant. Other than that, employees are nice

Love this place. I recently moved to the Inwood area and I have been going here to get most of my pet supplies. I have 6 fish tanks and they are the joy of my life (don't tell my dogs that). The owner is super friendly and always ready to make suggestions to better my fishkeeping experience at home. Prices are fair and I never feel pushed to buy anything I don't need. See you guys later!

I’m so glad I stumbled on this place 🤩I’ve been meaning to add some fishies to my 15 gal tank and while walking a friend home I found this place! I added 2 Angel fish, 2 plecostomus and 4 colorful fishes which I’ve forgotten the names. All my new fish are happy and are getting along with our betta and 2 mystery snails 😅Tropical Pets Dyckman has a really nice selection of fish, the man who helped me was very knowledgable and friendly. I also picked up some dog treats! I usually go to petco but this will be my go to, small business’ forever 🙌🏻

Although Tropical Pets supplies for many different animal types and pet needs, I come here for my fish. The staff are extremely helpful, knowledgable, and respectful. If you have requests for something you’d like in stock for solely your own purchase, they are extremely willing to try their best to satisfy those wants, and get that for you in their upcoming stock. Their fish selection is quite large, as they have many fish that are able to suit different tank sizes (which you can buy as well) and have different aggression rates. They restock and get a new selection about every week. All fish are healthy.

I had been looking to buy cat nail clipper for awhile. I couldn't find anyplace around where I live to buy it until I went into Tropical Pets. Found the nail clipper for my two baby's, & bought them some cat treats that are good for their teeth. The cashier was very respectful, & the prices weren't that bad. A bit high from other places I've been to in the past, but nowadays everything has gone up so it is understandable. I will be going again when needed.

Very OVERPRICED. I let them know I got a new pet and I feel like they used it as an advantage because I didn’t know anything about prices or things that I would use. However half of the things I purchased I did not use AT ALL. Not only that he put multiple food 4 types of food and out of two of the 4 types of the food I was given MULTIPLE of them and my pet dislikes those food but one. And now it was money wasted, food wasted, and certain items I got that I never got to use wasted. My total was almost $400 and I honestly feel very used bc it shouldn’t have been almost $400 and I should’ve never gotten so many foods that I didn’t see the guy put in my bag either that I paid for!! I was also not shown the price of any of the items he just scanned them and told me the total.

I go to this place all the time and I will keep going. Bought a leopard gecko there for a good price with all of the supplies. The owner helped me get everything I needed. It was great I definitely recommend over petco and petsmart👍

Needed some snails for my 5 gallon divided beta tank. Been looking everywhere for them in the bronx. No one has any. Worked in the area for a couple of days. Did a Google search for pets..found this spot. My snails are thriving. Picked up some cat treats too. Lot's of critters and birds. Cool local mom & pop business. Support our peeps!

But this town appreciates trying to handle the pet know howsI just went for a brief visit and adopted a cavypogo (geniepig?) They have new borns and some familiar breedsI would say they need improve with legal adoption and communication for local safety and legitimate history

The pet shop is clean and you can tell the animals are well taken care of. The employees were nice and helpful with my purchase of a Zebra Finch. Other then that, I do not like the store policy when it comes to purchasing pets. Why would I need to buy $15 bird food that I already have at home? Why would I need to buy $18 vitamin that I can purchase for less than $12 at another petshop in NYC? I ended up spending more than I needed today. Shaking my head…

Today I bought dubia roaches and I’m so disappointed. It was my first time purchasing here so I was excited that I found a place where I can buy it live. Based on the amount I was charged it was a red flag since the guy told me they were $2 for 40. I asked for the value of $10… I also got horn worms which he said the container was $16 something. He also recommended some other worms and gave me two small cup containers so I got 2 of those. The whole thing somehow added up to $256. So here is my main reason for the review! Dubia roaches DONT CLUMB UP. I keep mines in a fish tank since they can’t climb up the glass. After merging the ones I purchased with the ones I already had, I was in disbelief after seeing that some were climbing up. I immediately killed them all and sprayed Raid. All I thought about was wow I spent my money on nothing. When you go to a pet store and ask for a specific thing you trust the person since they’ll most likely have more knowledge about such things than you but I really feel played. More than 5 roaches climbing up by that person error was the end result of my whole colony dying and my money being spent for nothing. I feel like I was overcharged. If Dubia roaches is what y’all looking for I wouldn’t recommend this place. Perhaps for everything else yes but selling something to someone who asked for a specific thing and having it merged with other roaches should be illegal since I didn’t asked for regular roaches! I don’t like leaving bad reviews but this might help someone else who is probably looking for what I tried to purchase. Now they’re aware that they too might not get just one kind of roach they might get a different breed out of the bunch.

This place is a PHENOMENAL pet store. They've handled my custom order for distinct animals and equipment with aplomb. Which is not to say they don't have what you need on hand for most pets. They have what your dog and cat needs. But they are the rare pet store in Manhattan that supports beyond cats & dogs. Fish, reptile, amphibian and avian friends are all well represented. Even if you are just buying food for what you have at home, if you have a child with you, they will enjoy meeting the friendly and talkative parrots, well cared for turtles and lizards and cuddly small mammals. Superlative rating for a great, independent resource for all Manhattan 3 minutes from the 1 train.Update: Still true as of August 2023

They're missing a major opportunity to generate more business by not offering a loyalty rewards program to their customers. I asked twice and it was a sounding, no. Especially since their prices are a little high, which is fine for a pet shop that isn't a big chain store, but all the more reason to offer perks. I go there only when I have no choice. However, they do have some awesome fish and reptiles in need of forever homes.

Very bad customer service, we were looking at the dog section to see what else we would buy we were looking for about 6 minutes since we like to take our time and the owner very rudely yelled at us and asked us what we were doing we told him we were looking at the products and he accused us of looking the prices online and said we weren’t allowed to do it. We had toy balls for our dog on our hands to buy and have bought multiple items from this store before. Never did we show any other intention.We left the store as this was extremely rude and unnecessary. Will rather give my business to another store that knows how to treat their customers.

This is a very small shop that sells quality supplies and low maintanence pets. Compared to online retailers and big chain stores like Petco and PetSmart, their prices are definitely fair. The staff, as noted by other Google reviewers, is cordial and helpful. It's evident that they genuinely care about the animals. Each time that I have visited, the tanks and enclosures have been clean, and the animals have appeared well fed, robust and active -- including the large McCaw and African Grey that greet visitors as they enter the store. The pets for sale include: parakeets, guinea pigs, rabbits, fresh water fish, and one or two snakes and lizards. Tropical Pets also sells lots of pet care staples (such as jackets, bowls and clippers), and feeder animals (including crickets, worms, roaches, mice and rats). If the store does not have what you want in stock, the staff are happy to place an order for you as long as you're willing to put down a small deposit. Wait times for special orders are usually less than a week.

So this pet shop replaced our beloved fitted hat shop. And to be honest I really didn’t see the need for yet another pet supply/shop. But once I walked inside, because me like most people are getting pets. For companionship, something different, a break from all the crazy stuff we are all dealing with etc. it felt as if they have been there for years. The staff is extremely attentive, helpful, friendly and VERY knowledgeable about the animals they have offer. Also all of the animals look healthy and kept in clean environments. If your on dyckman st. And looking for a new pet or supplies for the one you already have. I definitely recommend you stop by🙂

I 6 goldfish from there way over priced nothing special about the fish for that price but the point is ALL 6 FISH DIED within 24 hours of getting them and I've been a fish owner for 10 years I check the water quality and I know the proper things to put in the water I've NEVER in 10 years had a fish die on 24 hours until this place. They would not give me back my money and on top of it they blamed ME telling me I put setting wrong in the water THEN tried to sell me THERE opinion of what to use and low and behold I ALREADY USED AND WAS USING ALL OF WHAT THEY WANTED ME TO BUY so there is a issue with there goldfish not me $90 down the drain HORRIBLE

I usually dont lost about pet stores but I stumbled upon this little shop on dyckman and I ended up going back a couple times.1st of 5 stars for how clean looking; smelling and ALL THE TANKS WHERE SUPER CLEAN!!: clean feeling the store was (everytime I went in there) I must say it was like magic c ok compared to chain pet stores. It made me want to go back and buy more supplies for my aquarium . Even though I'mtelling myself " like just get plants ramon" I ended up with plants and 2 new fish.Wrapping it up in a nutshell tropical pets is a great place to start or maintain your aquarium. YES PRICES ARE SLIGHTLY HIGHER than chain storesBUT THE LEVEL OFSERVICE ; INFORMATION& CLEANLINESSwas onA WHOLE OTHER 5 LEVELS..you get what you pay for. I can't wait to go back

I was here about a week ago . I can’t remember the guy that helped me . I was having trouble to keep my turtle tank clean .he guided me through everything I needed to do . Gave me knowledge on feeding my turtles . And most importantly they don’t try to steal you’re money or give you bad information about how to care for your pets unlike other stores (petco pet smart ) like this guy knew exactly what he was talking about. Definitely my go to pet store from now on .

Great place , Brand new pet store to dyckman and post. Mask required for entry. A lot of pet stuff and pets to buy inside. Good vibes and great people and i always come here to get my turtle some fish and get her other stuff and some cat stuff. They have fish, hampster's gerbal's, mice, ferrates, parakeets, finch, a big macaw bird, a few other birds and have alot other stuff inside. Must check it out!!! 🤗🤗🙏🙏 Excellent customer service!!
