We adopted our wire haired dachshund from C.A.R.E. in August 2022. The staff were wonderful and Johan (pictures below) is the perfect dog for our family. I would highly recommend adopting from them.

I cannot recommend this shelter enough. We took home a kitten this weekend and are SO in love. Jeanne was so informative, helpful, and kind while also giving us the space we needed to come to the right decision for us. All the cats in the sanctuary were so people-friendly, curious, and calm, which speaks volumes to the staff’s care and attentiveness. We feel totally confident about our new pet’s health history and upbringing so far. We came all the way from Brooklyn and the experience was so worth it!

Absolutely thrilled with our experience at careofdc! Adopting our dog was a breeze from start to finish. The online scheduling for the doggy meeting was so convenient, and their responsiveness made everything seamless. The staff was not only lovely but also made the paperwork process organized and easy. Wishing you the same joy in finding your dream dog as we did!

I suppose it is safe to post about this place as it is no longer "my litte secret." I call this the 10 cent store. They take donations and liquidate them to raise money to rescue and sell abandoned pets. This is a non profit. They sells reptiles, rodents and amphibians and affordable pet supplies. On the other side of the store they have a flea market style store.Books are 10centsVHS tapes 10 centsCheap Cds cassettes LP and 45sStereo equipment, old toys, medical suppliesThis is a great place to shop if you are a young teacher looking to build a leveled class library. Don't spend 8 dollars a paperback when they are 15 for 1$ here.

CARE has the most loving and dedicated animal lovers I've ever seen. They are so genuine and invested in the care and proper placement of the animals that I hope people will consider them first when wanting to adopt.Kerry texted me twice to check in on how our sweet Linqa (now Luna) was doing over the course of 2 weeks.I will always remember how every staff member I encountered was simply amazing and sincere. Please consider adopting and supporting this fantastic local rescue.Thank you so much for our sweet girl!

CARE is amazing, I cannot say enough good things about this place. We have adopted 3 dogs and a cat from them and helped many others adopt from them as well. Karen and all her staff are the greatest, most caring people and we will be back again in the future ❤️

This place needs to clean up their act or shut down because I’ve heard of MULTIPLE pets that have been adopted that are actually sick and owners are having to spend hundreds of dollars at the vet the day after adopting because these animals are not okay and should not be cleared in these conditions. Plus they won’t even cover the vet bill which is absolutely insane. If you plan on adopting from them, I wouldn’t, but if you do please question everything. Especially if the pet recently received antibiotics from them.

What a treasure trove of awesomeness, run by thee coolest, nicest people, for the sweetest of causes. Incredible selection, and everything is well organized. I still can't believe I was just in a thrift store with guinea pigs, and got a rain jacket & hoodie for the dog, and birthday cards to send to friends! What a special place that we are so lucky to have 🙏

The people are friendly and they’re always thankful to receive donations. The shopping selection is great, especially pet items, dvds, nick knacks and household stuff. All proceeds go to help the animals in need, everyone wins!!!

I have adopted 2 dogs from CARE and have fostered for them as well. I have nothing but wonderful things to say. All of their animals are fully examined by their vet, spayed/neutered, microchipped, vaccinated & dewormed. The cost of spaying a dog alone through a vet is more than double the price of adoption, I can't understand why anyone would not adopt ♡ The organization, it's employees & volunteers go above & beyond for all of their animals. I received a letter from the foster mom of the 1st dog I adopted because she loved him so much. The owner gave us so much help when our puppy was sick, it was incredible. I would recommend anyone & everyone looking to adopt to contact CARE. You will not be disappointed ❤️❤️I also boarded my very scared rescue dog for the 1st time ever at Mutts Mansion, the boarding facilty run by CARE. I was nervous for him to be terrified, but when I returned to pick him up, he was following Alisha around like her new best friend. He absolutely loved it there. They took wonderful care of him & made him feel safe & happy. Highly recommend to all!

What a great rescue! they processed my application , verified expeditiously my references including my vet. Most important, they kept me appraised of my status. I rescued the sweetest little scottie-mix who fits in perfectly with my family and my big dog. They even suggested fostering for a week to see if my dog would get along with Newton". I am a long time animal lover, I take my pets very seriously - CAREofDC does the same. Yeah for them!

CARE of DC is the absolute best rescue, if you’re looking to add a new furry friend to your family. I adopted my dog as A senior a little more than a year ago and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. The adoption process was easy and all the staff and volunteers truly have such COMPASSION to each and every animal in their care. They go above and beyond for the animals, and their adopters!Highly recommend!

We love this place! They have great service and love all their animals. We got our Sasha (German Shepherd) from them in may 2020 and she is now a thriving part of our family. Thank you Care of DC for all that you do. We are currently looking at getting another special friend from their facility. Hopefully he will be with us soon!Matt

9/6/2023-This is an edit to respond to the director’s response. First off for you to say that the volunteer that I interacted with wasn’t rude is kind of funny considering your response was SUPER RUDE!!! They are following your lead. If you actually read my original review you would’ve seen that “I came upon this adoption event” meaning that I came into the store and seen that it was going on so obviously I would not have known your adoption fees ahead of time. Secondly, I have four dogs of which I can afford so for you to make a statement about that is disrespectful. I was asking for an elderly friend of mine who lives alone, and is on a fixed income, but wanted the companionship of a dog, so before you reply with judgment and attitude, you should know the situation ahead of time. Thanks for just reconfirming that I would never use your rescue or recommend you!I came upon their adoption event at Petco yesterday. I simply asked what their adoption fee was. $400 I was told. I asked if they had any programs or knew of any programs where the fee was lower for someone who wanted the companionship of a dog but was on a lower income. Instantly I got an attitude with a rude “NO” and was told you would spend $400-$500 just to get a dog spayed. Well I said back to her “That’s funny cause I just paid $200 for my dog to get spayed”. Now I see all these negative reviews. Glad I never dealt with them! FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE EVERYTHING!!! BTW dutchess County SPCA is doing zero dollar adoption fees right now!

CARE is a wonderful shelter focused on saving dogs and helping them get homes. I adopted two of my dogs from there and the workers and volunteers are amazing. Reasonable pricing for dogs and focused on the dogs well-being over profit. Highly recommend adopting from CARE.

My friend was approved to adopt a kitten. She had her heart set on one specifically. She was told the adoption fee would be $200 and to come down today to pick it up, as they couldn't promise it would be available tomorrow. As her ride, I needed to request to leave work early today in order for that to happen. A pick up time was scheduled, and I was approved to leave work early. In less time than it would have taken for me to get there if I had left work immediately, my friend received a call that the cat was adopted by someone else. Now she is heartbroken. I understand that it is on a "first come, first serve" basis.. but if someone schedules a specific pick up time for a specific animal, that should be respected.

Please, please be warned! Compassion gave me a sick pup to foster. They told me that he had Kennel cough, but he became dreadfully sick the first day I had him within hours. They gave me meds for him, but they weren’t prescribed by the doctor they had on the prescription because I spoke to the doc and she never saw the dog. I reached out to them to tell the dog was sick, and they told me to take him to the pet emergency the night I fostered him, and there would not be any charge. When I got there, the doctor demanded I pay her because I brought him in as an emergency, and I told them that CARE agreed to pay the bill since I was fostering. The next day, they refused to pay the bill. I found out that the dog I was fostering was from a Manhatten shelter where all the animals are dreadfully sick with Pneumonia!! The doctor at the emergency facility informed me the night I brought the dog in. The next day, they wouldn’t give me an update on the pup’s condition when I called , but instead, told me I was untrustworthy for taking the dog in to the hospital. They told me that they were refusing to ever deal with me again. I dont know what I ever did wrong, but all I know, is that that beautiful little creature would have never made it through the night. He wouldn’t eat, drink, and struggled so hard to just take a breath. I know I saved his life. These people at Compassionate only want your money! Oh and just so you also know, they kept the very sick animals in the same room with the well ones and the ones that were being bordered and groomed so they were all probably infected. Stay away from this place! They have absolutely no compassion for the animals there, and do not care how sick they are. They are just worried about making money.

We just adopted our second dog from C.A.R.E. The first was three years ago and the second was yesterday. Everything was done smoothly, professionally, and I would recommend this rescue if your looking for a new family member.

Negative reviews benefit no one. It only affects the ability of other animals to get adopted. Most of these animals come from deplorable conditions. They are vetted and given treatments as needed. They are dewormed and vaccinated and neutered. The transportation costs to the shelter are not free. I saw a complaint about the cost of adopting a pet. If you cannot afford the cost of adoption, how can you afford food and vaccines and medical care. CARE does not make a profit. They exist on donations. If you have a negative experience, discuss it with the director. Don't post it. Why would you? Instead, why don't you volunteer to help other animals and make a difference!I am not affiliated with CARE, but I know of the great work they do like other animal care and adoption organizations.

This organization is dedicated to the animals! Everyone gives 100% and makes sure that the animals are going to a safe and forever home. I have seen their work as a customer and I have seen their work and dedication as a volunteer. I highly recommend adopting through this organization. ADOPT, don’t shop!

I had an excellent dog adoption experience at CARE of DC. The team and their shelter are so well organized, responsive, and communicate well throughout the process. This wonderful group of volunteers clearly dedicate a lot of time attention to the animals in their care. I found the most incredible dog at CARE, and she was much loved by the compassionate volunteer team and foster family there. Thank you, CARE of DC!

Their application process moved very quickly, and they contacted my vet and my references within a few days. Once we were approved for adoption, their communication was excellent. We ended up choosing a small-breed adult dog to adopt, who is now the perfect addition to our family. Their facilities in Wappingers were beautifully maintained, and the dogs seemed very happy and well-cared for. Please, PLEASE make the drive and go to care of DC if it’s not the closest rescue. These people’s hearts and souls go into these adoptions and keeping the animals safe and happy beforehand.
