Love Commander Cody's! We've been eating there for years and never had a bad meal. Everything is FRESH and cooked on the spot.

The food was good. Evrything was tasty. If you are from the Southeast region I would not recommend the crab cakes. Stick to the shrimp or other staples.

The seafood is great. It has a good soul vibe. Real seafood, fresh too. And with the blues and soul music to add.

Fresh, delicious sea food at a great price. Much better than some of the fancy overpriced places in Greenport. Wonderful people and homey atmosphere. Do not miss!

Stopped by to have lunch on a Saturday afternoon after reading such good reviews. The lady behind the counter was extremely rude and complaining that we couldn't order food because she was just way too busy to cook. She turned so much business away and many like myself said we will never return. The young man who ran the counter was so embarrassed and apologized. Save yourself a trip because its not worth getting yelled at for trying to give them business. Why have a restaurant??

Cool laid back joint . Things to know if your going to eat there it's cash only. Also if you want a drink it's BYOB.The fried flounder sandwich was awesome thoroughly enjoyed the muscles. The baked clams were a little too watery for my taste. Really cool vibe. Soul food. I definitely go back.

This is a cornerstone of the Shelter Island community and I have eaten here since I was in grade school on the island. It is a mix of the best seafood the area has to offer as well as some great soul food mixed in. It has a very homey setting and is not pretentious like many restaurants in the area. This is a must visit for anyone vacationing on the island, the residents already know this!

Truly a hidden gem of shelter island. Laid back environment. Fresh, delicious seafood at a very reasonable price... And best of all, such a great group of staff. Such a great experience altogether. Very strongly recommend.

Commander Cody’s Fish Market is a mainstay on Shelter Island. Owners Jimmy Hayward and his daughter Amanda, serve the best fried chicken and assortment of smoked fish that people come from far and wide to enjoy. Recently I stopped in and got containers of prepared food from their fridge: potato salad cole slaw, ribs (to warm up at home) and smoked bluefish, and it was absolutely delicious. The smoked ribs are to die for, by the way. With family-run restaurants with a personal touch becoming such a rarity in this area, we are fortunate to have Commander Cody’s here on our little island. During peak times in the summer, the parking can get a little tight so parking on the street is a good idea. Following a Hamptons magazine review, Commander Cody’s got “discovered” and during the summer it is often best to order hot food in advance. As is often the case for the best, there might be a wait, but the outcome is worth it.

apparently the food is good but a three hour wait to get served is unacceptable. congratulations your business is growing. unfortunately you're not growing with it. there's no excuse for 3 hour wait for fried fish. No excuse

8/2023 Update: BEWARE! Kitchen hours are NOT as shown. Posted hours are for seafood market only! Hadn't been there in awhile; went out of our way to stop by for lunch, only to be told the kitchen was closed. Not sure when it's open, so I advise to call first.Original post: Small, simple dining area area and outdoor seating. Order food in fish market and they bring it to you. Fried chicken, broiled sea scallops and oysters on the 1/2 shell were very good. Reasonably priced.

The fried chicken is delicious and the ribs are great. I've ordered from them 3 times and each time, they missed something from the order. I also had to flag the attention of someone behind the counter as I waited politely for someone to take my order for 5 minutes. Would it kill you to make eye contact with a person trying to order? I also tried to call the order in, but they didn't answer three times in a row.

1 million stars, the best place to go on Shelter Island. Born and raised on Long Island, the last place I feel comfortable on shelter Island. I realize Stacy has bought everything up and has tried to make everything the way it was but it’s not working for me. Went to the Chequit earlier and it was awful. Left and came here and absolutely saved my birthday! Thank God he’s still here! Thank you Jimmy and Amanda!

I love Commander Cody's because it's very old school. Nothing fancy. Just very well priced seafood to stay or to go in an extremely casual setting for Shelter Island We got a little neck clams that I took home and cooked That were cheaper than Shelter Island seafood by $2 a pound. We have gotten lobster dinners from there in the past. Very solid. Highly recommended!

I am well-traveled and enjoy the appeal of a modest restaurant with good food. Commander Cody's Seafood could use some help in management and customer service. The kitchen staff is more focused on their takeout service than in-restaurant service -- our meal order was lost in the volume of take-out patrons and took an hour to receive. The wait staff needs training in basic customer service -- we experienced poor wait service follow-up, incorrect meal order delivery, and inadequate knowledge of the menu. The food was good, but overpriced for quality of service and quantity. Bottom line: Enjoy Commander Cody's Seafood by calling-in your meal order.

Nothing spectacular, but not terrible either. It is definitely a unique experience getting to Shelter Island. Be aware you have to take a ferry each way and they only accept cash. Commander Cody's also is cash only. The restaurant is my kind of place: hard to get to, hole in the wall, no glitter on the walls, old fashioned just eat seafood and have fun type of joint. Parking is very limited so get there early. The good: the small town atmosphere is nice; prices are decent; portions are sufficient; fish and seafood are fresh and you can see Cody filleting the fish you ordered; friendly staff; reservations are accepted but plan ahead because there's not much seating; BYOB; offer takeout; soft drinks are self serve "scouts honor" kind of dealThe bad: fishy food smell. Not the place.... The food. When I say fishy, I mean FISHY. I'm a seafood fiend and this really bothered me. The fried oysters, the fried catch of the day, even the fried shrimp were fishy smelling! Because I was able to see that the oysters and fish were very fresh, that's the only way I knew I wasn't eating rotten seafood and this leads me to believe it was the fryer. If that oil isn't changed regularly, it will accumulate and impregnate the food with bad fish odors. Please change your oil or figure out what's causing that smell. It's awful.A few last notes. Get the seasoned fries. They are much better than the regular ones which are basically McDonald's quality fries. The seasoned fries are very good. The cornbread was average- nothing to rave about. I know people complained in other reviews about the service, but ours was fantastic. We got our food within 15min of ordering or less and paying was easy too.If you're into cooking your own oysters at home, come here to buy. They were $1 a piece when I was there- much cheaper than the average $2-3+ other places charge.

Visiting Shelter Island off season and found this wonderful spot that is reasonably priced. So good we went back the second night. Clams on the half shell were tender and fresh and the fish and chips were delicious. Wait staff was friendly and there is a casual "DIY" vibe in terms of ordering, getting drinks from the fridge (or BYOB), etc. Skipped the homemade dessert because we were full but they were very tempting.

Do yourself a favor, stay away. We had the worst experience this 4 th of July weekend. This place is not ready for dining in. We went there for lunch. The restaurant was empty but busy with online orders . We sat in the outdoors area for an hour. After an hour we were told that they were too busy for us, our order of oysters , priced at $25 was given to us in a box all messed up together. Our request to place oysters on a plate was simply ignored. The rest of the order wasn’t served. Never felt disrespected in a restaurant before. We decided to leave and went to Salt Waterfront Bar and grill which was also busy but well organized .Will never go there again.

Hidden gem on Shelter Island! The food is top notch (salmon and swordfish platters are particularly delicious, especially because they come with corn bread, fries and coleslaw!) Check their facebook for the latest info, as sometimes they require food to be ordered hour(s) in advance (fried chicken takes a particularly long time). Overall, highly highly recommend!

This quirky seafood restaurant stands out for its friendly staff and huge portions of delicious food. As you pull into the driveway and go down the hill, you'll notice the restaurant is situated at the basement level of a residential house. Keep this in mind because there is limited parking right outside the entrance. I dined on the chicken wings and a seafood mixed grill platter and had a fantastic time. Make sure you call ahead in the winter because when I ate there they were getting ready to close for the month of February.
