While they don't let you see all the animals in person, they have a book and a table at the entrance where you can sit down and read about each pet that they have and then arrange to personally see one. Most of the animals here are strays that animal control collects. The price to adopt one is very cheap I think it's $57. I would check periodically if they don't have any dogs you want on that day.

We called to see a specific dog for adoption and the staff guided us through several dogs that they felt may be a good fit including the one we asked to see that they told us might not be a good fit for our 5 year old. The last dog was Legend and he’s now part of our family. The sweetest and smartest dog in the whole shelter, the staff worked with us for 2 hours to find the right pupper for us. The staff were just as concerned with making sure he was right fit for us as we were the right fit for him. He came to us spayed/neutered, chipped, vaccinated, and dewormed. I would absolutely recommend this facility to anyone looking to adopt and NOT a CERTAIN facility up the road.I cannot say enough nice things about TONHAS and their staff.Adopt don’t shop.

Nothing but praise for the North Hempstead Animal Shelter. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We came looking at one dog, but the shelter rep had us bring our current dog to meet the new one. Turned out they were not very compatible, so she matched us up with a different dog and we couldn't be happier. Spirit (aka Mozel) is a perfect fit with our family. They were very good with reading the dogs behaviors and seeing potential personality issues between the dogs. Highly recommend!!

I adopted my dog , Foxy, from the North Hempstead Animal Shelter last August. I was still missing my previous dog but determined to have another. Foxy is that dog and has become my daily companion. She is affectionate, playful, and smart. Her gentle personality is so endearing and she is more than willing to engage in any activity that suits me. I might add that she can romp and play with my thirteen grandchildren and a safe, great time is had by all. The Covid-19 quarantine would have been unbearable without her company and our daily walks.The staff at North Hempstead Animal Shelter were excellent! They talked to me at length to determine what type of dog would be a fit for me and Foxy was their first choice. (And mine!) North Hempstead Animal Shelter was the best decision I could have made.The fee was nominal and we left with new toys, leash and collar promising to be in touch! When we headed home, everyone involved in the adoption process was thrilled and happy. Especially Foxy! She has been smiling and kissing us all ever since!!

My dog has escaped from my backyard and this shelter was a big help in finding him. I initially called and described my dog but he wasn’t over there. About half an hour later the shelter called back and informed me that my dog was at an emergency veterinarian center nearby. The fact that they remembered how I described my dog and matched that description to a dog in an entirely different location than theirs is amazing. Even taking the extra step to call me back and inform me where my dog was tells me alot. The people working at this shelter genuinely care about animals and have a passion for what they do. I am beyond grateful for their help in my situation.

Great staff. I adopted little Cosmo. He is doing wonderful what a good dog. He had alittle issues at adoption which made me worry alittle. But now I am proud to say they are all gone. Now he is potty trained learning new things everyday from his brother and new friends.

So wonderful!! Lisa was such a huge help! ❤️🐾 But... I am very confused as to why they don't house and adopt out Cats?!?? They NEED homes just as much as dogs do! Cats are on the streets dying/suffering - they need to find forever loving homes!! Please start housing and adopting out CATS! Thank you.

I was very satisfied when adopting a dog from this shelter. The employees explained the adoption process in a very helpful and friendly way. They show my new dog's attributes and short comings and how I can overcome them. They spent the time with me to make sure I would make the right decision. The adoption paperwork process went smoothly and quickly. Definitely a great place to adopt a pet.

Called the shelter with my mom. The older lady who picked up had no compassion that our dog had recently passed away and we were looking for a new dog to help ease the pain. She then started to ask my mom if she is a couch potato and we were confusing her as to whether we wanted a small dog or medium dog. Who cares we are looking for a dog !! Exercise some professionalism when dealing with a shelter and people calling asking to see a variety of dogs and trying to get them a home. That lady should switch places with the dogs and be in the cage and give those wonderful dogs a home !!

Met the most amazing dog, Vanessa! She's now home with us. We love her so much already. The staff is wonderful- very knowledgeable, caring and friendly. Definitely recommend! Remember "Adopt, don't shop."

If i could give them 0 stars then i would. One of the most unwelcoming and rude shelters i’ve seen. The husky(fat) lady at the front was rude, disrespectful and not helpful at all. People like that is what ruin chances for dogs to adopted. It so sad to see how the shelter and the lady let themselves go, a tragedy. FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO GE ADOPT JUST BE AWARE WHEN GOING.

I was so interested in getting a second dog to join our family. I have visited in the past and loved the attention and honesty of the workers. They are all angels to these dogs and do wonders for them. Their mission, goal, honesty and love is what brought me to visit this shelter. Unfortunately, my almost adoption was unsuccessful do to my puppy not being so great in his environment. I highly recommend this temporary home. Please, whoever is seriously looking for a dog , consider adopting Webster. He's a big, wonderful and loving dog. Gentle as they come and just deserves someone to love him forever. Good luck Webster and the day I spent with you was amazing!

I rescued my Dog from here and I'm glad I did. He was a little older than what I was told but I got 6 great years out of my dog. For what I paid, I got a leash, collar, toys. I have no regrets getting him from here. When the time came to put Bear down (my dog), they were very helpful and took care of it. If I ever think about getting another Dog, it'll be from Town of N. Hempstead Animal Shelter. That's Bear.

The people here are great and so are the animals!!! This shelter is such a breath of fresh air because unlike some other ones they are extra caring in finding the perfect match for pet and owner. These people care so much about the animals my dog now used to come home with one of them because she didn’t like the cage. I love this place I found my doggy soulmate here. She’s just the sweetest, most loving, beautiful, and fun dog you’ll ever meet. And I love her more than anything in the entire world I even sized up to a king size bed so she had tons of room to sleep with me ahah... best experience you’ll ever have adopting!!!Ps.If any volunteers see this it’s Luna the pittie we adopted august 8. couldn’t be happier with her and she’s really flourished with us. She loves everyone she meets and took a liking to going to my grandmas house. My grandma calls her the “baby” after being scared of dogs her whole life lulu took away her fear. She’s really an amazing dog. My grandma even has bowls for her and let’s her go on the couch when we visit. She loves making other lil doggy friends and is very gentle with the little dogs because she has this maternal instinct even though she’s a young dog herself. Thank you guys so much we couldn’t have gotten a better dog!!!

I never leaver reviews but I had such a BAD experience with this place I had to write about it. I brought in 4 KITTENS trapped for spay neuter, 3 girls, 1 boy. The boy was totally fine, one of the girl kittens DIED!!! The other 2 would not eat and hid for 3 days, and one just had her stitches open up. I will never bring my kittens here for spay neuter again.Think twice before you come here.

After checking websites about adopting a dog, we made an appointment at the shelter. The woman we worked with was very knowledgeable about the dog we wanted. She was with us for about an hour and we walked out with our newly adopted dog.

Amazing people work here. We recently adopted our dog from here and the process was so easy they let us spend time with the dog to see how they would interact with our children. The dog we adopted is amazing he's the sweetest dog in the world. I definitely recommend this adoption place to everyone that is looking for a dog.

We went here by accident looking for the North Shore Animal League. There were many Pit Bulls but they all appeared to be well taken care of and the place was clean. The gentleman gave us literature for all the good shelters within in a 50 mile radius. Five stars for taking care of so many Pits.

I wish I could give it zero stars. After searching for a dog for months my family came across the perfect dog named Wilber. After multiple visits with Wilber my kids were set on taking him home. Because he was not at the 10 day window for adoption we were told to come back in Monday for an early adoption. They even held a drivers license copy.When I arrived Monday to pick up Wilber I was told that he was being given to another family who was parked at the place before me. You can't even imagine the pain on my children's faces. Apparently they continued to show the dog to people knowing we were coming to pick him up in a few days. In an attempt to get two dogs adopted, they have a first come first serve policy. They SCAM you into thinking you will get the dog so when two people show up, the disappointed family still takes a dog.When I spoke to the "director" she was nasty, rude, and condosending. She actually told me to go back to where I came from if I don't like their policy's. (I drove an hour to get there for a dog they knew we were coming to get and had visited multiple times)This place is trying to do the right thing and help animals but they clearly forgot how to treat people.

Well I had just euthanized my 18 year old beagle. I had problems with my Lyff driver. (No car). I arrived 320pm and took a glance and was going to adopt a pooch. The supervisor told me I'am sending employees home because it was inclement weather. I couldn't take the dog 🐕 home which I really needed a companion. She told me I'd have to return yesterday. I was wrong and said ok, I'll get my a-- out of bed and.grab a 🚕. She said I'am not getting a good feeling about you and ur not adopting dogs here. I said i was wrong.and apologized for saying the a** wrong but she didn't accept my apology at all and told me I couldn't adopt any dog and don't come back.I left and called the lyff driver. It was a 21 minute wait. I busted out crying outside an could not stop. Several workers came outside to comfort me an gave me a blanket. I told them they should go home because that's what their supervisor wanted.The workers were caring but I will never recommend this shelter to anyone or return here again. She said that's what you get for showing up 3:20 pm and handed me a paper sending me to suffolk county etcera an so forth. I'll give North shore animal league. They're open later too

Everytime I go there to drop off a donation of dog food it's been clean and the staff is very friendly. I wish I could adopt every single animal they have. Adoption it the best way to get an animal that will love you more then you know!!!

Dogs only. The staff are all so nice. Facility is clean and in nice location. Rescued a great dog from them recently. They really care about all the animals.
