It’s exactly 10 years since we asked Liza Phillips to come up with a design for an area rug. The challenge was that it had to juxtapose a rather colorful and wild “seating landscape” by Argentinian designer Hans Hopfer. Liza’s approach, a very special base color “mauve”, not pink, not purple, not brown, just perfect. Four differently curved, beige lines running off the rug, lend it dimensionality. And after all these years, the rug is holding up beautifully, a testimonial to the Tibetan craftspeople. We have since purchased a number of runners and small rugs from LPD’s inventory, always fresh, always sophisticated. Last but not least Liza Phillips Design is a member of Goodweave!

I love my rugs from Liza Phillips Design. The colors and designs are sometimes sophisticated and sometimes playful. Walking on them barefoot is a joy. The rug shown is over five years old and still looks like new.

I was looking for just the right rug and stair treads for my 120-year-old home, which was getting a makeover. I wanted something unique and contemporary to serve as a contrast to the original hardwood floors. I had seen Liza's designs online, and decided to make the trip to her studio, which is in a renovated barn in Narrowsburg, NY. If you're fortunate enough to be exploring the Catskills, a trip to her studio is definitely in order. She has a large variety of samples to see and feel - there are many rugs as well as her Alto Steps collection of stair treads. Liza's designs are all thoughtful, ranging from straightforward to funky and whimsical. Custom orders take a few months to arrive as her pieces are made by Tibetan weavers. Liza is a pleasure to work with and she sent us home with a huge pile of different stair treads to try out. We wound up designing a rug and treads using her radio waves design and choosing our own colors. And installation is very easy. If you're in the market for floor coverings or a cool and unexpected addition to your home decor, Liza's website is definitely worth browsing.

We bought a nice carpet from Liza a couple of years back. It's quite unique. Liza has a very singular vision that she conveys through her carpets. She has them hand woven in India. The wool and colors are natural. our carpet is a monochrome yellow on natural background. It show a negative image of a startled bird flying up from the forest floor. It conveys the surprise of the moment. I think this is very subtle and special as is all of her works.

Liza’s beautiful and unique designs have transformed our rooms. And the Alto Steps were so easy to install with Liza’s instructions. From the quality of the wool and workmanship of these handmade rugs I know they will last a lifetime. Liza and Francis have been a pleasure to work with.

I have a total of five Liza Phillips rugs of all sizes and designs, spread between two houses. The "city rugs" are elegant and totally wow my friends & guests; the "country rugs" hold up to an 80 pound dog who loves chew bones, while still looking beautiful and tying together all my other furnishings. So glad I found Liza and so admire her aesthetic -- and the fact that these rugs are Fair Trade and follow traditional Tibetan weaving (as the retired director of a museum with a large Tibetan collection, this is most meaningful). Beautiful silk/wool "city rug" below!
