I adopted Toeby (the brown tabby originally named Nick) last year around September. I went in originally inquiring about a kitten but decided Toeby, a toothless, chatty, senior kitty needed my home more.Toeby was incredibly kind and loving. He had some minor litter issues that were promptly resolved after changing the type of litter we used. He was in overall good health for his age and condition and is doing great. He is an old kitty and does need to see the vet a few times a year to get blood work but he is still perfect.HCHS is amazing. The adoption process was smooth, I was able to visit with the cats and talk with staff. I only had to wait a few days after I filled out the application for them to contact my references, and I was able to easily bring Toeby to his forever home.When you adopt an animal from a shelter you are accepting responsibility for that animal as soon as you bring it home. Sometimes animals will have unknown health conditions, sometimes they will have a behavioral issue that needs mending. You are accepting the possibility that you will need to conquer those issues and provide a safe and loving home to this animal. The staff here do everything they can, please be considerate and responsible when adopting. The work they provide is not easy, animals AND staff need support and respect to continue helping this community.

These are the best people in the world, caring for the sweetest animals in the world. Thank you JoAnne and everyone involved for helping us bring Scout into our home and our family. He is the warmest, most wonderful little guy we could ever have been able to hope for after losing our last pupper to a cancer battle in June. We didn't think we could love another so quickly, and this is our first adoption, but Scout is the love of our lives. He sleeps with us every night, always has lots of hugs and kisses, is always a gentleman. He will always have all the love he needs with us. He is a treasure. Thank you all so very much!

I went to adopt a cat. I ended up getting 2. The staff were friendly and helpful. I have been to other animal adoption places and the staff have been outright mean. All of the animals appeared well taken care of. Please remember that if you have not filled out an application and been preapproved you probably will not be walking out with an animal on the day you visit. It's best to get your application in to them before you get your heart set on a specific pet. And I had to contact them with some questions after I adopted. They were friendly and helpful with all my questions. I can not say enough about all they are doing to help animals.

Herkimer County Humane Society was the best shelter I visited when I was looking for a cat. They were professional and friendly, and had the best cat room by far! After several visits, I picked Miss Emily Pickles. She’d had surgery on one eye to remove an ulcer, and she has some problems with her other eye, but that doesn’t bother her. She’s fond of chasing things I can’t even see. If you’re looking to adopt, I recommend HCHS. And consider an animal that’s less than perfect. I did, and soon found out she IS perfect!

People that were very nasty to my wife are the worst. Just because we had to give up one of our cats. We have a baby at home and it was to much for my wife. I will not be do any business with them again.

Everyone was SO welcoming and absolutely amazing!! I truly can't thank Melissa enough for how patient and kind she was! ❤️ The whole ride home the now named Milo aka my-my didn't move at all! He slept through the car ride, then slept through the moving process of finding a scarf that was comfortable as well as breathable in the heat. He finally chose this green one. But he did like the thick warm one that resembled fur. But it was far too hot for right now. And Charlie is just being a goof and checking everything out 😂 he's finally made himself right at home all snuggled up! I'm so thankful for these beautiful, amazing and loving companions ❤️❤️

Adopted a cat 3 years ago, they took her in when she was emaciated after being thrown in a trash bag, they nursed her to health and she got fixed, had some lung issues due to anesthesia but they fixed those too now she is a happy healthy (chubby though) 4 and a half year old cat. Now we've got a 4 year old husky mix named Lacey who is just the sweetest dog. She has bonded to me so well and its just the best, the humane society is the best place to get the right animal for you

I absolutely recommend adopting a pet from the Herkimer Humane Society. They take very good care of the animals in their care and work with you on helping them adapt to changes. It’s also very affordable to adopt . I would also recommend supporting them as they don’t turn any animal away but may not always have what the pet may need .

I just want to thank everyone there at the humane society. Not only are they caring and loving for all furry friends, this place is kept up and very clean. I adopted our newest member to our family almost a week ago. She is a 4yr old dog..Her name is Charlie. We love her dearly. Thank you Herkimer co humane society. Your staff made a life changing happy experience for my family. I would recommend this place to anyone who loves pets the way we do and who will give the best care and love ..5 stars all the way for this place!!! Gina ,Tim and management an extra Thank you.🐾

The staff is absolutely wonderful. They do an amazing job and they love the animals. When you adopt a pet they make sure you have all kinds of info for when taking your pet home and to help them adjust to the new home.

I recently lost my cat near herkimer county, he has not been found yet. But I really appreciate herkimer county humane society taking the time to call me today and update me when they got a cat matching my cats description. Even though it wasn’t him, I appreciate them thinking of me and taking the time to see if it was my cat. It gives me hope that my cat could turn up there 🙏🏼 Thank you

I don't like that they talk down about people that run out of options and have no choice but to surrender their animals. Also I don't understand how its fair that if you surrender an animal for a good reason they make it so you can't adopt one later on after you get your life together.

SO Disturb with this place and their workers!! Our family cat got hit by a car, we wanted to replace our cat so we decided to check here. It took weeks for someone to actually talk to me to say they denied our applaction but also the cat was adopted??? Well which one is it bc once i called 4 days before they had 5 applaictions that nobody had looked at. Meanwhile they are ranting about how many animals they have. I called them atleast twice a week to only get a different answer every time i called over the course of 3 weeks. Then when they finally talked to me whomever I spoke to couldn't keep the story straight about if the cat was adopted or the "board" denied my application. This "board" is also a joke as my mother went in one day to look and walked out with a dog the same day??? Nothing here makes sense, which i feel its due to the lying/run around. Just be honest! So we can move on and find another cat to bring in to our family!

I make cat pillows/dog beds in my spare time. I use remnants from the fabric store and put hase stuffing in bulk. My 85 year old neighbor is on oxygen and used a walker. She lives by herself. I try to visit her several times a month with craft projects, puzzles and baking activities. Helping me stuff the pillows for the Herkimer Humane Society is by far her favorite activity! These are just some of the pillows we donated this month!

Very nice place. Smells like disinfectant and bleach so you can be reassured that it's kept in maintenance and up to standards with COVID-19. As for the staff, well there is a older lady that doesn't like her job. She seems unhappy to be there and likes to tell us each time that none of the dogs are for us. Wonder how any of the dogs get adopted? Apparently none of them likes kids? I have a four year old that looks forward to the trip to this place but sadly we walk out empty handed each time. Take what you want from that review.

After I surrendered an addicts felines I was told that I'm not allowed to go back and check on the welfare of them. And that is very concerning and sad because I would like to know what happens to these animals when they go behind those doors and I'm not saying somebody to type out what happens I want to see it. Not happy with my experience.

My bride often sends me to the Herkimer County Humane Society to drop off food or supplies that they may need. The staff are amazing!

The humane society is a great place to go to and help volunteer or work at. The animals Are all really cute and nice and r all wanting a home. Now the staff there are really hard workers and great workers and take very good care of all the animals so the animals can be ready to be brought to a home. The staff are very nice and friendly like the animals. Those are some of the reasons I go there to volunteer/work.

Amazing staff, always working hard and doing the best for those in search of their forever home. My family and I love to go visit with all the animals show them love and make donations when we can. We appreciate what you folks do over at the Herkimer Humane society , and we're sure the animals are also.😁

great place! My dads dog jumped off the bed of his truck yesterday. He spend all night looking for her in hopes she would come home. Since it wasn't fare from home. This morning my dad called me in hopes I can do something to help. So I called the Herkimer County Humane Society and the told me that Inna was with them. I was so happy and relieved that they took such great care of her. And helped me through step by step of what I had to do to make everything right. I'm am so thankful for them. May God bless you guys abundantly and provides you with everything you need and more for that place. Thank you so much for taking good care of all the animals there to the best of your ability. Keep God as your one main priority and He will take care of you.Be blessed!!!!!

Herkimer Humane Society was amazing! The workers were sweet and caring and courteous! They had a bunch of dogs and cats there and the place was clean! I look forward to finding my forever for baby dog there!

We visited today to meet the dogs. Their staff was so friendly & helpful. I had never been to a shelter before and I was really happy with how patient they were with us while we were there. Thank you to everyone that works there!

My friend's dogs ran away. She has been moving from herkimer county to Fulton county. As she was moving things to her new home, her dogs escaped out without her knowledge. The dog Warden took them to the humane society in herkimer. One dog was registered and the other two haven't been. My friend got ahold of them the following day. They neutered her dog without asking her and told her that they aren't a boarding house. Charged her for the nueter and 20 dollars a day per dog. Money is tight so she wasn't able to get them until today. It cost her $500 for 8 days and an unwanted nueter, and that was only for 2 of them. She had to leave her other there because she can't afford that. Who can? They said it is NYS law when in actuality they have to give the owner notice first and if they decline they have to write a promissory note to get them nuetered. This is called a humane society, however I am not seeing it. It would have been cheaper for her to just readopt her dogs rather then them overcharging her. Unjust! Wondering how they treat the animals if they treat humans this way?!?
