I am so glad that I took the advice of another reviewer and got the ice cream flight! At $6 for 4 flavors, you truly get your money's worth (and then some). I couldn't have even chosen a favorite flavor because all 4 were both interesting and delicious. Skip dinner and just indulge here!

Went here while on vacation in the area and I was not disappointed. Friendly staff and quick service. Lots of delicious flavors to choose and including some fun ones.I had the 'baby' cone ($3.78) and that thing was massive so I can only imagine what larger sizes looked like, but this was perfect for me. I had the Moose Tracks and Brownie Batter and they were both amazing!If you're near chautauqua lake, I definitely recommend checking this place out.

I think they had better re-evaluate thier portion sizes. When I order a 2 scoop cone I expect a reasonable 2 scoop cone. I think I received what was equivalent to 4 scoops...this cone was obnoxious. I had to request a bowl because the ice cream was dripping all over. Luckily we ate it there, outside and had extra napkins. I had a dark chocolate raspberry cone, nothing on them, just didn't care for it. I'm sure they have other flavors that would suit most. My other half had medium chocolate/vanilla twist ,well it was a large and then some. So if you have kids and go here, get the smallest size, cause it's likely to be more than enough. Thier prices were reasonable when you factor in the amount of ice cream you actually get. I was told by the worker larger portions are what they are known for. Me I just want a simple 2 scoop cone. If you have a huge appetite for ice cream, this is your place. Enjoy.

On our tour of ice cream places in Western PA, Eastern OH and SW NY, we happen to stumble upon Boxcar Barney's.Really nice location, you can sit in the Adirondack chairs or lounge at the picnic tables to enjoy the view (remotely) of the lake. Very pretty setting and perfect for a sunny summer day and ice cream.We always comment on how some places have "grainy" soft serve or varying degrees of creamy. Here, we totally enjoyed the creaminess of the soft serve. A bit of a surprise for two small cones coming in at ten bucks but then again, the portions were generous and the location made up for the rest. Cones without a paper sleeve, which was odd, seeing we live in the age of Covid. Regardless, nice place, nice staff and a good old fashioned treat on a day made for it. Oh ... and the only place we have seen so far with PASTEL sprinkles. Not a huge thing but enough to set it apart from all the other standard color sprinkles. FUN!

The portions are massive for the price. I ordered a baby size ice cream cone and it was gigantic! I think all of there ice cream is homemade as well, which is a nice change from all the chain ice cream places that all carry Perry's. Brownie batter and orange creamsicle were our choices and they were so good. It was a nice treat on a hot summer day.

Biggest ice cream around!! We drive 20 minutes to go here. Love the revamp and that they take debit/credit now. Keep up the revamp it's looking great!Our favorite thing is to get ice cream and either go to the big playground across the street on the lake or walk the rails to trails trail that starts right behind boxcar's. It's well maintained and great for strollers and littles.

We where in Ripley New York for the day to see family. Was looking for the Icecream place that we found last time by chance in 2016. Couldn't find it again, but with a quick search we found this wonderful gem in the most Picturesque town.

Good ice cream but they lie on there menu small 1 scoop,medium 2 scoops, and large 3 scoops and that is a lie. The small is the size of 3 scoops the medium is 6 scoops and a large is as big as a football

This place has the best ice cream in three states. I had heard rumors but wow. The menu is expansive three ice cream is awesome. Great vibe too. Can't wait to get back.

If you like homemade hard packed ice cream and treats, you need to eat here.The servings are MASSIVE and the flavor variety is very good too. I ordered a 3 scoop cone and each scoop is likely half a pint!😂Worth every penny.

Great selection of hard and soft serve. Larger servings. Food options, but folks come for ice cream. Open till 9 but they stay open till the line is gone. Sometimes as late as 10

We LOVE Boxcar Barney’s and go multiple times a week while we are at Chautauqua. They have delicious ice cream (Hershey’s, I believe), tons of great flavors, and huge servings for very reasonable prices. Their service can be a bit slow, especially soon after dinner. Still, we are happy to wait the 20 minutes to get this excellent ice cream!

The kids working here are giving out so much ice cream it’s impossible and very messy to eat. We asked for 1 scoop and they put at least 6 scoops. Very wasteful.

A nostalgic must visit that has been updated, we love going to Barney's! Wish there was more shade and a couple more vegan flavors, but glad to see this Lake Chautauqua staple thriving!

Missing a star for no cherries. No cherries!? What's up with that?As far as everything else, the staff was super friendly and fast. The line was to the road and the wait was less then 20 minutes. It was very reasonable. The lady at the register was super nice. Banana split was amazing. Try a banana split with brownie ice cream and carmel.

OMG! The variety of flavors this place has! Absolutely amazing! And the quality of the homemade ice cream? Delicious and wonderful! Just be warned, the serving sizes are huge, so if you are unsure of how much ice cream you'd like, go smaller. If you want ice cream by Chautauqua lake, this is DEFINITELY the place to go!!!

Very Very upset, have patronized this place many times when in New York. We planned a day in the area with our motorhome and always stop in the park across the street. I checked your website for hours and it said you were open, drove 90 miles got there and CLOSED. You couldn’t even take the big sign down bye the road that said OPEN. Very hard to do I guess changing hours on website and taking homemade sign away from road. Four other cars pulled in as I was walking back to our RV. Very upset with unreasonable people anymore. Enough said , find another favorite ice cream place. UPDATE , HAPPENED AGAIN ON 10-4-2023. SHOWED OPEN ON WEBSITE BUT THEY WERE NOT OPEN WHEN WE ARRIVED, HALF HOUR AFTER THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE. EVEN CALLED THE DAY BEFORE, DONT REPETE DONT TRUST CALLING OR WHAT YOU READ. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
