I used R&R guide service to do some rock climbing while in the area. My guide, Will, was terrific! Very experienced climber. Was on top of every detail and super thorough about safety. A must have for climbing!! Knew the area so well and picked out some great locations for us to climb at my skill level. And on top of all that just a super nice guy! Such a great experience. Will definitely use them again when I’m back in the area!

We've used Rock & River for years. They are great guides and Ed runs a great operation. The breakfasts are always delicious, the rooms are clean, and the kids love playing with the dogs. We've stayed here without using a guide when hiking with the kids, and we've used Ed's guides for vertical ice climbing, both top roped and multi-pitch climbs, for skiing, for winter mountaineering, and for rock climbing. Never had anything less than a great experience with the guides. I recommend Rock & River without hesitation.

Rock and River Lodge is set in a pristine location in Keene with welcoming and very knowledgeable staff. The rooms are very well appointed and comfortable with peaceful quiet for a good nights rest! The breakfast spread was wonderful to fuel for a busy day of hiking, climbing or whatever. For the novice, which we are, the staff provides plenty of ideas for the day as well as expert guides to help. Chad guided my daughters on a rock climb and the experience was excellent. He was professional and knowledgeable. There seemed to be no limit on the adventures to choose from whether a new hiker or an expert. We made great memories here and will be sure to return! Thanks to Rock and River staff for a wonderful experience!

I had a great experience hiring Matt as a rock climbing guide via Adirondack Rock and River. Ed made booking easy over the phone, and Matt was a perfect guide. He expertly tailored our day based on my experience and what I wanted to learn and practice, and was always mindful that I was having fun and being challenged without being overwhelmed. I learned so much that I know I will take with me as I improve as a rock climber. Overall I loved my first experience climbing in the Adirondacks and can’t wait to try it again!

Rock and River is great! Ed Palen and the entire staff are extremely professional, highly experienced guides and housekeepers. The place is well appointed and always perfectly clean. The breakfast would keep a lumberjack full for the day with high quality, nutritious food. The location is beautiful right at the start of the Jackrabbit Trail surrounded by pristine, wilderness forest. The best there is in comfort and adventure!

Whenever I’m up in the Adirondacks (which is a lot) I stay at Rock and River. The place is amazing.... Nice rooms, comfy beds and serves an awesome breakfast to fuel your day. Ed Palen has great beta for climbers and hikers, he is a true area expert. Climbers should also check out the Barkeater Cliff only a 25min hike from the lodge. Ed also has great guides if you want to hire a guide for hiking or rock and ice climbing. Highly recommend.

This place is unique, special, beautiful and kind of wonderful. Mark, our rock climbing guide was mellow and terrific. The accommodations, food and fellowship were all outstanding. This was a terrific find and our whole family is looking forward to returning.

I went for one day of ice climbing in December 2012 with their guide Chad Kennedy. The guide service is a very professional operation with excellent facilities, including multiple lodging options. Chad is an excellent guide, and we had a good day of climbing in Chapel Pond Canyon and on Roaring Brook Falls. I would highly recommend this service both for its lodging and for its guides on ice, rock, or back-country skiing. Likewise, I would highly recommend Chad as a guide. He is very experienced and knowledgeable. His credentials are listed on Rock and River's website.Rock and River is located a few miles outside of Keene: there are no restaurants within walking distance. However, they appear to have a restaurant that serves at least breakfast and trail lunches. (They probably server lunch and dinner, but I'm not sure.)

One of my favorite places to stay every year. Beautiful views, great lodging, river on site worth walking trails and camping areas. It is close to Lake Placid and Adirondack hiking trails. They serve great meals as well for groups that are staying!

We had an amazing time at the lodge. There rooms and common areas are spotless. Free WiFi and buffet breakfast was great. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Surrounded by wilderness but only 20min away from many trailheads and Lake Placid.

Crazy story: we were looking for a burger as we were road tripping upstate. And we wanted a true ADK burger. We said we wanted to something like a rustic Adirondack pub. Sure enough, we found it and were very pleased!! Tons of outdoor seating and fire places to sit around while wait. There are also tons of house brews.!
