Dr Gary Mendelsohn took amazing care of my cat for over 15 years. His compassion in treating my cat and his professionalism when speaking to me was everything I needed in a vet. It will take time after the loss of my cat (due to age and illness) to adopt another but he will be my vet for any of my future pets.

Dr. Mendelsohn was awesome, teaching me ways to handle the puppy stage, educating me on the vaccines and timeline for my puppy, and walking me through everything. Our seemingly healthy dog had what was billed as a comprehensive check-up for diarrhea with Dr. Mendolsohn in December. Blood and stool tests were done and results were normal. We were given a prescription for diarrhea, when it was not effective we were prescribed two more over the next couple of weeks (turns out that was an attempt to treat the symptoms rather than the cause). Two weeks later the diarrhea was still present and we observed drooping and inflammation in his groin and felt lumps in his neck. As his hair was very short, we think that what turned out to be cancerous growths may have been detected by the Doctor during the exam. We returned and asked Dr. M to check these areas. He informed us that a likely cause was lymphoma, which was confirmed several days later by cytology. Other than informing us of treatment options and that this cancer was terminal but not painful we were told little about other symptoms that we might expect as it progressed.We had a check-up scheduled for Jan. 20 at 10 AM, when suddenly (that morning) he refused food and could no longer stand- but was not in pain. Accompanied by my husband and son, I brought him into the office. Upon examination, Dr. M recommended euthanizing him immediately. Devastated and struggling to come to terms with the situation, we asked if he could wait an hour and a half (until 12:00 PM) for the arrival of our other son who was alerted to the situation and had begun driving here immediately. Dr. M refused, saying that he would be leaving at 12:30 PM, which is when his office typically closes on Saturday. We begged him to reconsider, but he would not budge. Because we were distraught and not thinking clearly- we did not think to ask him for a referral to an alternative provider or emergency facility that could euthanize him with our other son present.Feeling helpless without options, we agreed to go ahead immediately. Dr. M injected him and he was gone in a minute. The door to the waiting room was opened at once and we were observed crying over our dead dog by another customer. We were not given a few minutes of private time to grieve our sudden loss. As my son sobbed over his childhood companion, Dr. M quipped "he's not there, he’s chasing squirrels now" with an oddly light-hearted tone. All in all, our appointment began around 10:05 AM and we were out of the office by 10:25 AM.This tragic outcome was made much more painful by Dr. M's failure to suggest an alternative facility to his performing the procedure or a few minutes of privacy afterwards. Our other son will never have the closure that he could have had.I returned to pick up our dog's ashes a couple of days later and asked to speak with Dr. M. His office assistant said he had stepped out and offered to take a message. I asked her to tell Dr. M that he made this so much more painful by not suggesting an alternative facility when he refused to delay the euthanasia by an hour and a half. Dr. M did not return the message and we have nothing further to say anyway.

Recently, my former veterinarian retired. I was recommended to Dobbs Ferry Animal Hospital. They are terrific there. Dr. Mendelsohn is wonderful! He’s very knowledgeable, kind, caring, and explains everything clearly. He answered all of my questions and took great care of my kitty. I never felt rushed. He made me feel very calm.Also unlike other places that try to push unnecessary things on you, he did just what he needed and the price is very reasonable. I was expecting to pay a lot more money. Can’t say enough good things about DFAH. I have been using this establishment for 20 years. Dr. Mendelsohn is a smart seasoned vet. He is as academic as he is friendly and personable. His exam of my dog is always thorough and his diagnostic abilities demonstrate not only a great fund of knowledge but the ability to synthesize all of those bits of knowledge into a sensible diagnosis. The visit is always punctuated by useful information about how to care for your pet. The staff is equally friendly and helpful. His assistant Jose, has been in the practice for many years, a testament to the family nature of this practice. Highly recommend this practice for anyone looking for great veterinary care.

My 100 lb Bernese Mountain Dog, Murphy, has been a patient for five years and I've got nothing but good things to say about Dobbs Ferry Animal Hospital. We know they care everytime we visit - whether for an annual physical or for some other reason. Murphy is no more of a fan than any human child would be of a doctor who gives out shots, collects blood, takes x-rays, etc., but I'm always confident he's in excellent hands and will be better off for it in the long run. The premises are clean and well-kept and there is a parking lot outside for easy and convenient access by car. (The bus also stops right outside if you want to take public transportation.) We hope to be patients for many years to come.

The vet is kind & skillful. The staff is amazing. They are so good that I drive 20 miles to get here.I gave this rating a few years ago, and I still drive 20 miles to get there! Dr. Mendelsohn and his staff are wonderful!It's now 2021 & I'm still driving my two dogs to see Dr. Mendelsohn. Last summer in the midst of the pandemic my 9 year old dog needed dental surgery and I was scared that she wouldn't come out of the anesthesia. The doctor and his assistant were kind and patient with me and my dog (who was fine). If you can get to Dobbs Ferry then you should take your pets to him.It's now 2023 and I've had a rough few years which have taken it's toll on my body making it difficult for me to walk and climb stairs (which is necessary to gain entry to the office) But as long as I can drive, my dogs will be going to Dr. Mendelsohn. The office, particularly his assistant, Jose, always help me getting the dogs - and me - in and out of the office. I can't recommend this office highly enough!

Dobbs Ferry Animal Hospital is a professional and expert practice with a pleasant, neighborly approach to customer service.Dr Mendelsohn is an excellent veterinarian. It's obvious he knows his stuff and you always feel like you're getting a considered opinion backed by years of experience. If it happens he comes across a case he's not familiar with, he won't try to fake it. He'll tell you outright and commit to finding a solution for you.He has a congenial manner and there's no doubt he cares about his patients. And for the fees he charges you're getting high quality care at an incredibly reasonable price (especially if you've ever had to deal with vets in Manhattan).Would thoroughly recommend this practice to all pet owners.
