Lots to learn here, the site housed 3 forts back in time, each with its own fascinating history. It’s also very cool to look at! We spent time walking around with a self guided map. It was a very windy, early April, day - there’s nothing to cut down the wind, so very cold. Wear layers. The rangers were very knowledgeable and patient in answering questions.Very accessible ♿️, well maintained grounds. Plenty of parking, clean bathrooms.

I would describe this park as Fort Sumter meets Pompeii. It’s a fort with ruins the equivalent of Pompeii. Took me about sixty minutes to walk the grounds where the fort was located and another thirty minutes inside the museum. Outside the park is the Santa Fe Trail Mountain Ruts which was really cool to see. The two NP guys inside were extremely helpful and friendly. Very beautiful scenery at and around the fort.

Beautiful scenery with an easy 1.5 mile walk. You can still see ruins from a distance in the parking lot and there is information indoors as well. Pretty chilly out with a little snow on the ground early March 2024. Sun was shining and there is information about these historic ruins along the trail that explains what each of the buildings were used for when they were functional. Would love to go again and spend a few hours to take it all in.

FREE monument 8 miles off I25.Mile walk around all the sites with plenty of signs and markers. There’s a small gift shop and museum that also has a few picnic tables and bathrooms. Beautiful facilities and worth checking out!

The whole tour was great. Guides were excited to share their knowledge and impressed with the number of Diné students participating. New knowledge was accumulated. Not only did the guides give a tour but went out of their way to do a fun real-life activity with the group with 95% active participation. Everyone including myself looked forward to the card drawing at every stop and ending with 3 pops. See you next trip!

This place is really cool. They have tried to preserve it the best they can. It's really cool to see almost all three sites of this fort. They have the star shaped earthen fort the one closer to the mountains that you can see but cannot get to I'm almost certain it's on private property and then the ruins you can walk through. You have part of the Santa Fe trail that runs through here in a couple of spots I can imagine stopping here after a long bumpy ride on a wagon. Just a side note all roads to this location are paved. The path might work for walking it's crunchy gravel so no wheelchairs or stroller at least I wouldn't think you would use them. If I ever make it back here, I will go again. They have plenty of parking and bathroom. Plus a kind of small gift shop and museum.

Be sure to visit the office first to take a brochure/map of the trail. No snakes on any of the trails I took luckily but they do warn you could encounter one. It's pretty windy in Aug and also very sunny but it was a nice walk around. Lots to see and intake, souvenir shop also located inside the office and restrooms too. Be sure to take your time and bring covered shoes, there's cactus in the grass too.

Beautiful drive getting to the location. Watch out for the Antelope A dozen or so were running next to the road outside of the fence. It takes about 10 minutes to get there off the road. It’s worth the visit.

I thought Fort Union was an awesome stop off of interstate 25. The park rangers at the fort were very informative and had a lot of knowledge on the forts history. We spent about 20 minutes chatting with the ranger about the history of the fort and the surrounding area. I enjoyed seeing the Santa Fe trail ruts and the marker in the center of the fort displaying the altitude above tidewater. Really a cool place, highly recommend.

So interesting! The museum and ruins are fascinating. Plus the 1800s weapons demo was really interesting, thanks to Trinidad, Michael, and Mike. Such a wonderful stop. Highly recommend.

This vintage visitor's center presents a variety of tidbits about the very interesting frontier fort; in fact, I'd say it is one of the best frontier forts I've been to. Anyhow, the ranger on duty was very knowledgeable, and the exhibits were fantastic. The grounds were immaculate and provide for a fantastic tour. Highly recommended, and not too far off the 25.

An awesome opportunity to step back into the old west. The staff was very helpful and enthusiastic to share Fort Union's history and the impact that the fort had on the Santa Fe trail and the southwest.

Excellent history lesson at this National Park site along the Santa Fe Trail. Ruins of the adobe walls are all that remain of the largest Army post at the time west of the Mississippi. Incredible setting in the New Mexico grasslands with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the background. Walk the 1 mile self guided fort tour to get the full experience. Worthy of the short trip off the interstate.

This was our last stop eastward, at this, windy outpost. Great little visitor center, though the movie theater is a bit cramped. It’s also a place to get warmed up after the gusty winds have frozen you :). The fort itself is based upon a very large grid, was nice walking paths in between it all. It’s a great vantage point to see the hills in the west, and to see the great plains to the east.
