We found and adopted the latest member of our family this past Saturday. Riley, a beautiful black adult cat. I heard his previous family fell on hard times and he had been living in a car with them. My husband and I are constantly traveling with our horses and dogs, so if we were to have a cat it would need to be able to roll with the “band” - so to speak. We had an 8 hour drive back home to northern New Mexico. Upon arriving home, with our two horses, two dogs and now cat in tow, we introduced Riley (now Mr. Pickles) to the other animals, he didn’t skip a beat. He jumped in bed with our 14 year old dog Daisy, as if he’d known her forever, and then did the same with 2 year old cattle dog Ursa. He’s an amazing addition to our family. Thank you!

I definitely support caring for and rehoming animals, but a traumatic experience that I had was made even worse. My kitty was very old and it was time for him to go sleep. I've had him for over ten years and he was my best friend. I brought him here because I've never had a pet put down before and assumed this was the best choice. They had me put him in a cage in the back and said they 'did not have the facilities' for me to stay with him until he was put down. When I said I'd like to just hold him until then, the younger gal told me they might not get to him until the end of the day (5 hours away). I said that's okay, I'll stay with him in my car. I didn't want him to spend his last few hours scared and thinking I'd abandoned him. When I tried to bring him back out, the older gal at the desk said "No, no, the specialist is about to go in right now." So in tears, I put him in the back again. A friend of mine mentioned to me later that they saw him still back there hours later. I understand not all cats get to be comforted in their last few hours, but he was my cat and I wish I could have done that for him. I was so upset and didn't want to be a burden to them, so I just left him there.

I was very impressed with this shelter! Very clean, didn't seem as stressful as others I've been in. Dogs seem to be well cared for. Everyone was kind and helpful . Thank you so much.

We went to adopt a dog. We found one within a half an hour that just bonded immediately with my husband. He had only been there three days. We have now had him three years, and he is thee best dog anyone could have. The humane society is very clean, and they take good care of the animals there. I will always look there first whenever I want another dog or cat. The staff there is very friendly and professional.

We drive nearly 2-1/2 hours to get there only to find out the dog we wanted was not 9-12 months, but 3 years old! The place has an odor of urine and the food there was a mixture of whatever is donated they explained. They said she had all her shots, but couldn’t find her records so just gave them all to her again. They didn’t test the dog for heart worm, which I found odd so that was an expense we had to eat. The adoption fee was cheap which was the only real positive experience of it.

Very clean facility. Staff is pleasant, helpful and informative Even met an enforcement officer when visiting. The helpful people try to ensure safety for the animals by advising on background information of the animals when available. Helping make the pairing of new family as successful as possible is so important as there are too many cases of abandonment of these loving and loyal creatures. My visit was only tempered by not finding a companion for my lovely Ripple,my love,an 11 year old street lady.

Well its pretty easy to find. The driveway was a bit rough, but the parking lot, landscaping, and most of all the kennels were clean. It didn't have the expected smell. The people running the place are nice. Very understanding and more then happy to answer our questions. We recently experienced a loss and the surviving spouse "needed someone (thing) to spoil and love". We always thought how nice it would be to save an animal and give it a good home. Unfortunately the price was a bit to high. And the requirement to spade or neuter requirement also seemed so unfair to the animal. We are curious about this because often time we grow to love our pets so much that we have puppies so that when we lose our wonderful best friend, we still kind of have them in their puppy. Anyhow, so we actually got one of the paper. Of course the usual ver Bill's to make sure he will be healthy and tons of toys so can be happy. And the cost was about equal. I guess my advice to the shelter, try to curb cost a bit. I know that's hard but. .

Did not give accurate information about animal I adopted. The Dog was older, but they did not mention she was violent with other dogs. My wife called to tell them promptly about the behavior of the dog and they did not mention that there is a two week period for returning the dog to use the fees for another adoption. I write this review so if you get a dog from there and it's not a match take it back right away...and be careful with there opinions about animals, they hesitate to divulge information.

Dogs looked very sad and some were scared to come near the cage to get pet... But they were all so sweet. Where the puppies were smelt like poop. And kittens were super cute but felt like they needed a bath. The people there were very polite:) best part is you can hold the kittens and cats, take the dogs for walks and even feed them treats

Fantastic animals.... What else can I say? We have been blessed with three pets from here and we wouldn't pet shop anywhere else. The staff is friendly and they appreciate any time you donate to the animals. It is rewarding to walk the dogs, take the cats out of their cages/give them love, and admire the not so common shelter animals who sometimes end up there (turtles, rabbits, etc). Stop by for a visit. You'll be sure to fall in love.

Its close and welcoming. Easy in easy out.Not ONE dog barked at me! Weird. I thought the other side had been euthanized (long road lyric?) But they were just outside. What a good group of dogs.

They provide affordable euthanasia. We stopped in to put our 14 year old dog down. Worst thing is that they do not allow you to be with your pet during the procedure...and they put your pet in the kennel area with the other barking dogs...the volunteers were wonderful but I would highly suggest they could be more compassionate for pet owners who are not there to "surrender" their pets but to help them ease their pain and suffering. We were grateful for an alternative to an expensive option at the vet but really wished we could have been with our dog up to the end so he wasn't so frightened at the end.

They won't tell me what they did with my dog. He was microchipped in my name. Someone else brought him in and said get rid of him. Never asked questions; I assume and never checked for a microchip. Was very rude in all my contact with them. Don't trust them!!! My heart is so broken and I have never gotten over this. He was my little boy. I can not have children. He was my child. He was always by my side. He was everything. They were not helpful when it happened and I've checked in here and there and they still have never been helpful. They remain heartless and rude. 👎😢

Shelters are always hard. They are just high emotion places. But Ruby and the other employees are down to earth realistic people who will have a conversation with you and make you feel at ease.

What can I say. The High Desert Humane Society helped me find my best friend. I adopted a dog 4 months ago and she is amazing! First off the staff at HDHS was very friendly and helpful. They were not pushy at all and let me take any dog for a walk that I wanted to. The facility was clean, and the animals there are very well taken care of. You can tell that the staff cares. GIVE THEM A RAISE!! I brought home a 1 1/2 yr old heeler mix named Alexandria. Now known as Adaline. What a find. She is extremely sweet and loves all people, kids, dogs and cats. We hike almost daily and she even runs along with me on mountain bike rides. She never tires, but has a very mellow demenor. She loves chasing lizards and squirrels and will climb trees to get to them. She never gets close to catching them BTW. She is potty trained and smart as a whip. We are working on the Downward Dog currently, but she has learned several tricks in the last few months. She is great in a car, and recently went kayaking and SUP boarding with me. She loves the water, but didn't even seem to know how to swim when I first brought her to the river. Anyways, just wanted to say thank you to everyone at the High Desert Humane Society. Oh and people, please spay and neuter your pets and adopt from a shelter.
