The Jemez River Soda Dam is an extraordinary geologic feature located approximately 6 miles north of Jemez Springs, New Mexico. This calcium carbonate/ travertine deposit dammed the waters of the Jemez River until highway engineers blasted through the western portion of the dam to create a passage for New Mexico Route 4 to continue from Albuquerque to Los Alamos. Bedrock deposits in this area date to the Mississippian/ Pennsylvanian (Carboniferous) geologic time periods, roughly 358-298 million years ago. Nearby Valles Caldera was created 1.5 million years ago, and the Soda Dam has been dated at 7000 years ago.

Amazing history and memories are carved into the walls here. I suggest going with someone who is local, who has grown up here all of their life. The family members that we were with told us what it was like when the original trains and horses and wagons pulled lumber and supplies through. When there were still battles between the native Tribes and the settlers. We could see where one of the other would sit and wait for the other to come around a curve to ambush them from a flat high ground that had a natural rock formation that hid them from below. It was amazing and awe inspiring. I desperately want to go to where my great grandparents got married in Eastern Europe. My origin story...

Such a cool gem off the side of the road driving through the Jemez. I highly recommend stopping, there is a decent amount of parking on the side of the road so multiple cars can stop. Make sure you go up into the little cave if possible. There is pooled water and sediment structures that are just so interesting. Beautiful spot to quickly stop.

Nice little stop to check out a waterfall next to the road. Wasnt expecting such a cool feature. The entire drive on this road is beautiful and worth driving. Across the street is an embankment that is holding back another spring. A nice spot to jump out of the car, check the scenery and stretch the legs

Its an awesome and beautiful spot. There is a warm pool near a waterfall. Its very easy access from the road, which means its not at all private. We were there on a pleasant Sunday afternoon and I wouldn't call it crowded, but definitely not private. Great place with little kids.

Not quite as scenic as I hoped. I'm guessing the road getting cut through it didn't help. You can see water flowing and terraces forming on the opposite side of the road. There is a small waterfall visible at the end of the dam. There is a small pull off before and after it.

This is the first time to the Soda Dam for me, the minerals smell like sulfur. You get used to the smell quite quickly. It is an amazing site to see. Take a walk around it on the roadside and there is a place for you to climb up on the top, instead of climbing on the flat side, unless you are those experienced climbers. When you go around the other side there is also a much easier place for climbing. Also there is a small area to see a hidden river in the back of it. People are so overwhelmed with the front of the Dam, they miss the beauty behind it. What I also like is that all the sites are only 3 to 1 mile from each other or less. And you can take a dip in it.

It is just off the side of the road and worth stopping for a rest. The sulfur formed dam is carved out by the water similar to caverns. You can climb around above it if you like and a local nail artist even left their mark in a few spots. I mean hammer and nail when I say nail artist by the way.

Very cool area! Drive slowly going through the small towns as there are a lot of cops waiting to get ya! As for the landmark itself, it’d very interesting, right next to it across the street you will find small hot springs. They may fit maybe 2-3 people and it is literally next to the road!

Always a fun quick stop for us. The kids love climbing in to see the little hot spring and walking around the outside by the creek. We typically spend about 30 mins here.

This place is a must stop! On Thursday we stopped by and could have spent an hour here just relaxing. There was a nice breeze, nice views. We viewed the Soda Dam from the bottom and then climbed to the top. The Sulphur smell was pretty bad but the views made up for it.
