A huge campground for 50 spots, off the beaten path. The camping sites are huge. There are many pull through sites. The town of Truth or Consequences is a short drive away. Fishing and boating are here. Didn’t get to do that. This place is very, very quiet. Nice bathhouse with showers. Cute little nature trail.

This place is wonderful and other worldly all at the same time!! Things to know, the dump station and showers are in the desert cove loop, the other comfort station is closed for the season. This place is soo quiet and clear at night and the ability to drive right up to the water is always cool. Nice people, nice beach, nice playground. If you're around, eat lunch by the water. It's so calming!Note, that's not the spot we were in, that's the spot directly across from the playground.

Review is for campground only. The good: Most sites seemed pretty level; each site has a picnic table, shelter, and fire pit. Nice views of the lake and an easy walk or drive to the waters' edge A mix of pit toilets and shower house and flush toilets across the various campgrounds within the park. Adequate dumpsters available. The park seems clean and well kept. Budget friendly, especially for NM State Park Camping Pass holders. The not so good: Can't think of anything. It was a very nice place that's on our regular route.

We spent a beautiful afternoon at the lake. It's our favorite place to go, and we look forward to camping soon. Elephant Butte holds a special place for us, but highly recommend to all. Kids can play in the sand and water. Our dogs love it too - swam and fetched the whole afternoon.Great place to bring a camper or tent and sleep under the stars. No better evening than around a campfire! This trip, we made one for the afternoon as it was a little cool - we cooked hotdogs and made smores.Once it's a bit warmer, we'll be out on a boat, and kids will swim all day! Be sure to wear your sunscreen and practice safety when in water! Guaranteed for a good time.

We came for a picnic in day use area. Their website says water, toilets, shade. We asked and paid $5. Well, no water and no toilets. Campground toilets for campers use. Guess where we went!We were given a map. Tell people open restrooms circled in yellow!!!Restrooms: Locked

I squeezed in a couple sites over 3 days. I loved being able to drive my skoolie right on the beach. The staff were more than helpful. Water was gorgeous and clear. The sites were very clean and level. Full hook ups. Very quiet at night. Definitely worth another visit!

We stayed at the south Monticello campground within the state park adjacent to the Rio grande river for 5 nights. Don't know why it's called South when it's actually on the North side of the state park, but what a nice campground! Sites are spacious and well spaced apart and very clean. Water and electric onsite for only $15/day at the time of this posting. Big rig friendly too.

We love coming here, it's beautiful and relaxing! Only thing we dislike is there's no shade really anywhere unless you bring your own. Otherwise, we love it and will continue to come here!! It's definitely dog friendly, they have nice picnic areas and the bathrooms are well maintained. If you haven't checked this place out, we highly recommend it!

ProsVery beautiful sunset and sunriseLarge, lots of spaceHot showers (look for Desert Cove or find them on google maps)Fairly accessible and not too far from civilizationCell serviceLake accessConsIt seems very busy on the weekendsWhen we arrived there didn't seem to be any staff around (Saturday 4 PM)Maps on the website are pretty terribleNot many details or instructions for first timersUnclear where 'main area' isExtremely windy & sandy (the worst combination)Lake levels are a stark reminder of the rapid deterioration of our climateSome thoughts:For primitive camping- recommend to bring a vehicle that won't get stuck in the sand if beach camping is your thing. Otherwise there are options throughout the rest of the camp, but very little cover from wind/sun.Overall this place is pretty nice, and I enjoyed the 3 nights we spent here. The location is cool and you can't complain about a nice lake. That being said there are some pretty big red flags that make this a place we won't likely be returning.Rating 3/5 because I think 4.5 avg is very generous (& perhaps misleading)

We stayed here and had a great time! The sites were clean and all seemed to have good views. The water was low but it was beautiful!

We love to camp here.... Primitive!!! Beautiful! Fun for kiddos. The camp grounds are ok but don't have a family oriented feeling. A lot of retired people. So, our big family is more comfortable down by the water. More space to relax.

We loved it here. The hosts and volunteers were fabulous. It was busy at Easter and we had to move several times but we got to experience all of the Park and it is a credit to Elephant Butte and Truth or Consequences. We really enjoyed these towns and the mining towns around them.

Elephant Butte Lake State Park has been one of our favorite campgrounds so far. The campground is very well laid out. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Great views, great places to walk, our dog Rocky gives it five stars too The only thing I would add, is that the showers; I wish the water was hotter and that you didn’t have to push the button to keep the water running. I would definitely return to a Elephant in Butte Lake State Park. We stayed at site number three on lower Ridge Road in a 30 foot motorhome. Perfect spot!!

For a five dollar entry fee you can spend the day at one of the most beautiful places in New Mexico. It's a bit rustic, latrines mostly if not completely, but you can camp right on the beach which is so amazing. The water is clean, very warm, and perfect for swimming. We went about 8 days total during our 20 days in New Mexico.

We've spent a week here, camping at both Lion's Beach and S. Monticello campgrounds. Clean facilities and a great shower house. We hiked much of the West Lakeshore trail, which is well maintained and full of great views. The lake is down but that allows for long walks on a lovely beach. We even saw the actual Elephant Butte!

We had a great time hanging out and staying the night on the beach. Pulled up close enough to the water, built a small fire (this was in March) ate good and relaxed. Very reasonable entry fee. Easy to drive through the sand and find a spot. (We were there on a Tues) Great little getaway.

Our visit to Elephant Butte Lake State Park was one of the favorite memory I have of visiting New Mexico earlier this year. The park has breathtaking views of the water and surrounding mountain terrain. The top section of the park is paved with the roads leading down to the water and various camping areas left as compacted sand. The sand roads are maintained well but use caution as the frustration of getting stuck in loose sand will easily ruin an otherwise pleasant visit. The shore of the lake is windy and the sun sparkles charmingly on the waves. The park trails are nice and wide with good footing. They are long enough to walk without becoming overly tired. However, if you are looking for a longer trial the West Lakeshore Trail is ten and a half one-way hike running between the park's paved road and the lake. The park has areas for camping and boating. There is a nice playground for children and smaller shelter areas. The restrooms consist of plumbed, pit, and portable toilets. The park has disposal options for trash and recycling. There is a $5 fee for a day pass to enter the park. I would be quite happy to pay it again or the $40 annual pass if I was a local.

RVs are allowed to park along the lake, which have been witnessed dumping their waste into the lake because they don't want to lose their spot. Many tourists leave their trash; especially in the back areas of the lake that are less monitored. Many large boaters on the lake have little to no respect for those with smaller boats or those fishing (even from the shore). It's best to visit in the off season.

Great park to relax and enjoy the lake (unfortunately at very low water levels). We stayed with our RV at South Montecillo campground, which is actually at the north section of the park. The reason for camping there is because it is close the trail head to the lakeshore path. So, besides camping, swimming and fishing, you can hike an easy trail, but that is long enough (~10 mi) to give you a good work out. And, there are spurs that you can take to walk directly to the water. Also, you can drive right up to the beach and enjoy a good swim. Beautiful scenery!
