We stayed at the Eklund for 3 nights due to an unexpected vehicle issue. The owners and staff were wonderful. Very warm, friendly, accommodating, and amazingly understanding to our situation. The hotel has a lot of character and history with nice amenities, and clean and comfortable - Complimentary breakfast every morning (homemade coffee cake, biscuits, burritos, and quiche, plus more). The rooms were clean, nicely decorated to fit the historical nature of the hotel, and the room/bed was comfortable. They have a bar and restaurant attached which is open from Thurs-Sat with entertainment and across the street from the Historical Luna theater.Mind you this is a very, very small town with not too much to do as you would find in a city - not necessarily a vacation hotspot. But the town and the staff were amazing. Even though we never made it to our original destination, we were able to relax, slow down and have a great unexpected vacation here. I cannot emphasize enough how the owners made an untenable situation so much better - even enjoyable. If you have to stop in Clayton, don’t stay anywhere else!We were so fortunate to find this place, and will stop here every time we head to Colorado. In all aspects, The Eklund is a GEM!

We were trapped by the winter storm that hit, traveling from Houston to Canada. This hotel is very nice! The rooms are well kept, the staff is personable, and extremely friendly. It was a very warm welcome, coming in from the cold!!! I'm thankful for this unexpected stay (weather) not only are the wife and husband duo friendly, but they made everyone who filed in from the storm, a warm spectacular dinner. This place is a must stop, from the authentic Scottish cashmere scarfs (unbelievably soft), to all the beautiful bead work, and so much more. Even if you don't need to stay, come in for a look, you will not be disappointed

We had a great time at the Elkund felt like stepping back into the old west. Friendly and accommodating staff. Dining room featured a home cooking vibe - enjoyed the recommended meatloaf and mashed potatoes.Bring your ear plugs for the occasional train nearby or diesel pickup powering down Main street. Otherwise comfortable and out of the ordinary spot.

Visited the Eklund on the way to hike the Black Mesa Trail in the Oklahoma panhandle. The history is very rich in this hotel and the staff was very nice to tell us some historical anecdotes about the property. The rooms are spacious and some offer whirlpool tubs.Visit my YT channel @JeezeJack to watch my trip.

We were SO blessed to find this little treasure of a place when we were stranded in Clayton during a terrible blizzard. The town was shut down and hotels were sold out but the owners at Eklund were so gracious and kind. This property was a beautiful retreat after a very scary day. Our family is so thankful to the owners for taking such good care of us. The hotel is lovely, a beautiful piece of history. Thank you for welcoming us during an emergency situation, we will be back to visit again for sure.

We enjoyed our overnight stop @ Hotel Eklund. We have driven by the hotel so many times passing through going on vacation but have never stopped but wanted to. So glad we did this time & broke up our travel. Absolutely beautiful and historic hotel. So many stories, great nostalgia, and antique furniture. Our room was like stepping into the past. Vanita, the receptionist, the breakfast host, & tour guide was so nice. She knows so much of the history of not only the hotel but also the Clayton,NM. Keith, the owner, was also present and very friendly. The beautiful bar and restaurant were not open during our stay but look forward to enjoying that next time. Highly recommend the Hotel Eklund to everyone and look forward to our next visit.Noteworthy details: Beautiful, historic, and friendly.

First the good - The hotel is awesome, rooms comfortable and plenty of space. Feels like you’re stepping back in time with the wood finished and antique look. The front desk check-in was friendly and receptive. Now the not so good - First, be known, there is a train that runs through town 1 block from the hotel. Cane through at 10pm, 2am, and 6am (give it take a few minutes), so if you’re expecting a sound sleep through the night, that’s a challenge.Second, the saloon/restaurant. Beautiful setup to sit and look at. Bar only has one brand of local liquor if you’re looking for a cocktail (New Mexico brand I believe is what they said). Menu is limited, and a little over-priced. We had the elk rolls as an appetizer which were outstanding. Wife had the pork chops which were fairly flavorful, but tough, and overpriced. I had the steak. Pretty bland, was reminiscent of a Bonanza or Golden Corral steak, and way overpriced. No salad or roll was served with either entree. Seating was limited, so it felt like our server was rushing us through the meal so they could seat another party, and keep the money train flowing. So, I’d stay at the hotel, if you can sleep through the train, and I’d eat elsewhere if given the choice, especially if you’re looking for a nice drink to kick back and relax with to complete your evening.

Nice historic hotel. Rooms are clean and sparsely decorated with old west theme. Bed and linens were comfortable. Free breakfast was great with a made to order omelette with request. We had the cheese enchilada plate with Christmas sauce foe dinner and they were superb. Bartender was friendly. You can only drink there if you have dinner reservations or are an overnight guest. There was even a band we enjoyed with our dinner. Drawbacks? The very savvy women that own/ run the place are a little uptight. The bartender told us to take our drinks upstairs to explore the ghostly 3rd floor. Within 5 minutes one of the owners zoomed up on the elevator and told us to lower our voices and come back downstairs. The rest of the evening my SO and I whispered in our room. It was a very cool place. A cool place that feels like you are visiting your grandparents. Respect the place and keep it down. Also doors lock for a 9 PM curfew.

WOW, greeted by the charming Ms. Jo Beth who shared the history of the hotel and town, the room clean and bright western motif. Dinner was delightful, hostess Ms. Jeanette was very attentive along with the server Ms. Anne and the bartender Mr. Keith had a local distilled Rye whiskey to serve. A most wonderful experience on our bucket list. Thank all of you for making it special.

We have stayed here before and enjoyed the charm of this historic hotel. This trip, we paid for the second floor balcony suite. Unfortunately, the air-conditioning in the main room of the two room suite wasn't working. Management said they would reduce the price for the night, but they didn't. I haven't followed up for a refund. If you are off the beaten track in eastern NM, I would still say give them a try.Update, management contacted me provided a discount for the evening. The owner seems to be a very reputable dedicated person.

A great find on our way from Ft Worth to Colorado! Very nice historical lobby and dining room from late 1800s. Furniture & pictures of the Era all tell a story of family and life back in the day. We stayed in a queen room that was rustic but met our needs for the night. Only thing is it is close to hwy 87 & can be somewhat noisy from traffic. Overall a nice stay.Food & drinks: Ate at Hwy 87 restaurant for dinner in town. Very good along with service. The continental breakfast at hotel was very good also.

Hotel Eklund is an absolute gem! The building is so beautiful with a very interesting history. The staff was wonderful, so friendly and helpful. The area felt super safe. I would absolutely recommend staying here to anyone, one of my all time favorite stays!Rooms: The room was adorable, it was also very spacious. We were given plenty of towels. Our room had three windows with two overlooking Main Street.Nearby activities: The historic Luna Theater is right across the street from the Eklund. The have showings on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Highly recommend going to a showing!Safety: The area felt very safe, the hotel staff was wonderful and the other patrons were all great.Walkability: It’s located right on the Main Street making things very easy to get to. There is a movie theater and coffee shop right across the street.Food & drinks: Breakfast is included, is it served in the historic dinning room. The dinning room is absolutely spectacular.Noteworthy details: The hotel has so much history, if you like staying in beautiful old buildings swimming with stories staying here is a must. Truly a gem.

We drove to Clayton, NM at the border of Texas and NM to stay at the Eklund Hotel. It's an old railroad and cowboy town. The hotel has an interesting history with gunfights, bullet holes, wild west criminals, etc. It was updated, but kept lots of the original architecture and gorgeous bar that was won in a poker game. The owner has a green thumb with plenty of beautiful potted plants around. The dining room has some of the original headboards as seat backs in the booths. There were lots of pretty stained glass, chandeliers, opulent ceiling medallions, and ornate staircases. Vonita provided just the best service, history lessons, cooking, happiness, and kindness. She turned on the lights in the bar so we could take pictures. She told us about the history of the hotel, showed us the various bullet holes, told us about the history of the area, and gave us directions to several tourist attractions. It was so refreshing to see a young person who's proud of where they live and work, and who is so enthusiastic and kind. Vonita got us ice for our cooler, both when we checked in and then when we checked out. Vonita, also, served the generous breakfast with homemade quiche, breakfast burrito, pastries, and fruit. We didn't try the pastries, but they looked wonderful. The room was decorated tastefully in Southwest style. The rooms were clean and satisfactory. We loved the English Pear hand soap. This historic hotel was a refreshing change from the chain hotels in most cities.

It was fine but basic and lacked simple amenities. I’m not sure if it was a queen or full bed but the mattress was awful. No hair dryer or clothes iron. The TV only gets one channel. The breakfast (quiche) was delicious and was the best part of the stay. I would’ve given 1 or 2 stars if it weren’t for the quiche.Would not recommend unless last resort.

The Eklund is such an iconic location in Clayton. The menu has a handful of specialties which they make to perfection. The wait was long, but it allowed us to walk around and explore the restaurant, learn of its history, check out the hotel room (which is rustic quaint and nicely decorated), admire all the plants thriving throughout, listen to Christmas music, play the piano. Stop here for history and charm!

I decided to splurge to stay in this historic hotel instead of the good-enough non-chain motel out on the highway. But it wasn't worth the added cost. The public spaces are nicely restored, but the rooms have almost no historical character -- just not very functional and ugly furniture containing the hotel's "E" monogram. There's a reading chair but no nearby lamp. There are no screens in the windows. The rooms are no better than a motel room, worse in some ways. The hotel provides a free breakfast for guests, but it was also disappointing. Everything but the coffee and oatmeal was refrigerator cold. If you wanted anything warm you had to put it in the microwave. They offer breakfast burritos, but all contain meat. Not everyone wants meat. Egg and potato burritos aren't unusual. The hotel's restaurant menu suggests it knows that it is likely to attract some vegetarians, but apparently that hasn't occurred to them for breakfast. Last, it's wrong to add a $4.20 credit card fee to a bill without informing the customer. Moreover, no place charging $105 and up for a room should charge a credit card fee. It's not like most of us walk around with that much cash.

After hours of driving from Colorado, we decided to stay in Clayton,TX. Then ask for a room in one of the hotels in town they were all full or just don’t like it, I was so tired of driving, so went to front desk of hotel in the road, a gentleman in front of me got the last room, so the clerk told me about Hotel Eklund, we were so glad we don’t stayed on any other but Hotel Eklund , the owner and all the staff are very friendly, the hotel is just a jewel, you will find history and details on every wall, they have good breakfast also, we will come back there if we have to , definitely!!

Exceeded my expectations! Well kept, clean rooms, good shower pressure, super comfy bed & sheets. The only suggestion I have is to have a full length mirror or even just a second mirror in the room. The history in this place is incredible and the bartender makes a killer Chilton. Oh, they also have vegetarian green and red chili as well as vegetarian appetizers and entrées. Highly suggest staying here👍👍

My husband and I recently stayed at the Eklund on our way to Colorado. The room was clean, the mattress was not great. I loved the jacuzzi tub, although a little weird to get in the shower, if you had a disability you might not be able to step over tub to use shower. We had a hard time getting someone on the phone to check us in when we arrived. The restaraunt food was not good..I ordered a chicken sandwich, it tasted like a frozen Tyson patty. The breakfast was sparse. Do not think I would stay again.
