Not many options in Chama NM. This is the best I have found. Limited days and hours so it is best to call first. I've eaten there several times and the service was always great as it is mostly family operated. It is clean and the outdoor patio dining is the best as it is a little crowded inside. The burgers are good and for the area well priced. Open for lunch and dinner only.

On this Saturday evening in Chama, NM, we chose the BOXCAR CAFÉ for dinner – it’s directly across the famous Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RailRoad station. It was 6 pm, and we were seated immediately. My wife ordered the Ribeye Combo (including house salad), and I ordered the Pork Carnitas. Both were excellently cooked, perfectly seasoned, and tasty delicious. Service was excellent – several staff kept coming by to make sure we were happy – and we were. The selection of beer and wine is good, but not extensive. Prices were very reasonable. We’ll definitely come back again.

UPDATE: One of the BEST lunches had in Chama in a very long time!!! Service was friendly and accommodating. Fish and chips were good, the tartar sauce FANTASTIC, and an excellent portion, too! Chicken Fried steak with mashed potatoes and green chile gravy, full of flavor and veggies were surprising! Lunch was a bit pricey. The menu listed chicken fried steak and fish and chips at $13 each, however the bill was $32 (no beverages were ordered) Lunch was $40 with tip. Happy they are open! Give them a visit soon!!!Previous review: Excited the Boxcar was open for dinner! There is NOT a selection for dinner in Chama, NM, especially as winter approaches.Knowing locals do not choose the ONLY other option for dinner in town, (with good cause) it appears from the numbers, Boxcar Cafe is their choice. It IS considerably better, food wise and HEAD OVER HEELS price wise! This reviewer hopes Boxcar Café will continue to be open in the winter season, and continue to grow from commercial restaurant food to homemade dishes, as it will surely have the business!

OMG, the best tacos EVER!! 🌮 ALL the worker's were very nice, GREAT service. I had a chicharron burrito, Christmas and both Chile's were very tasty and good. We also had a slice of their warm blueberry pie made by the grandmother of this youg lady that worked there. I highly recommend this place❤

My wife and I came in from Heron Lake this morning, Sunday October 1st. We go to the lake every year for our anniversary. We decided we wanted to try Chama to find breakfast and coffee today. We were extremely happy to find this place. The all you can eat custom omelette/buffet style setting is genius. We loved the atmosphere the food and service. A non pork meat option for breakfast would be great but not a deal breaker. We will definitely be coming back anytime we're around and definitely next year for our anniversary... Thanks again.

Not impressed. The good - fish and chips were great. Homemade tarter sauce was the best I've ever had.The not so good - service was slow, Had to ask for drink refills each time. Ceasars salad was fresh but not enough dressing and way overpriced for what you get.The bad - desserts. Cheesecake was maybe 1/2 inch thick and pretty much tasteless. Bread pudding was very dry.

They don't serve breakfast all day so I had to order a side of eggs and a side of bacon. That makes no sense to me but my food was good. The bacon was great! The coffee is ok, not great. We really liked our server. We had pretty quick service. The place is old and small. It suites Chama and appears to be important to the residents. It's located right across from the train stop, you can't miss it.

Food was good. Service was horrible. Came in the front door but seating was full so they asked if I wanted to sit outside. It’s a beautiful day, so I said yes. The lady taking my order was yawning the whole time. What she didn’t tell me was that food takes longer outside and that I wouldn’t be served outside. I had to go inside and ask for coffee. I didn’t ask for my food to go, but that’s how I finally got it. And they were all dismissive. When I asked for my coffee, they made an excuse about being behind on coffee making though there was 1/3 of a pot sitting in front of me. I had to pre-pay, so I gave a large tip thinking I was getting served, but I was sorely mistaken. And, no…contrary to the response of the business below, I didn’t cuss at the wait staff.

Went here for lunch and for breakfast - it's awesome. Service is excellent, food is delicious, there's WiFi, a clean bathroom, an outdoor seating area, and smothered burritos. CDT hikers, go here. If you don't know what a CDT hiker is, go here.

We were relieved to find a restaurant that wasn't packed on early Saturday afternoon. Our party had a child under 5 and an infant. Upon seating ourselves we waited about 10 min for menus. It took another 10 min for the young waiter to come and get our drink order. I had to ask if they could make a smaller burger for my 5 year old and I was told 'there's a kids menu for that' I looked on and around my table and saw no kids menu in sight. It that moment the waiter remembered he never offered it to us and went to retrieve it....I also had to ask for a high chair as the young man did not acknowledge I was still holding my baby in my lap.As for the food. It was $48.63 for food that was mediocre. My $16 cheese steak fell apart it was so soggy and the meat has no flavor, where as the fries were over seasoned. And yes I read they are seasoned fries. It would have helped to have a drink refill to go with our meal but none ever came. 3 sandwiches were ordered and no napkins of utensils were offered. We had to ask.Upon checking out I stood in line behind 2 individuals that couldn't stay still as they ordered $60 of food only to tell the young waiter they didn't have enough money. His response was " I'll do you a solid and pay what you have".....They didn't have any money and I had to stand awkwardly waiting, wondering if I will be offered a discount for the poor service. No discount was offered. We are local and this was our experience.

We stayed here for a weekend trip. The rooms were clean staff was friendly and welcoming. Parking is super close to our room, as we stayed in room 9. Highly recommend. (Since it is a small hotel, no microwave, coffee maker or fridge in room but just ask and they will accommodate as best they can. 5/5, would stay here again.Walkability: You can walk to most places from hotel. It is in front of train station.

Delightful place to grab lunch. We had the BLT and the Southwest quinoa bowl. Both were excellent, service was prompt as they weren’t that busy. Like every place in Chama if it was crowded I’m sure it would take a bit of time. I wish there was one or two Mexican food options on the lunch menu, but it looks like they have those at dinner.

Eating here reminded me of the important facts of life. You take the good you take the bad. The lighting was dim but the place friendly. The burgers and duck fat/Japanese seasoned fries we ordered were cooked to perfection. Unfortunately the fries were spicy enough to kill any flavors of what they were cooked in. The menu did not have any description of the seasoning and the host was not terribly knowledgeable. To top it off the bill for two modest burgers with fries for two and Coke and iced tea were over $50 not including tip. A bit much for one step above a greasy spoon.

Across from the train station, the Boxcar Cafe offers New-Mexican fair and is served in a laid-back atmosphere. Service took a several minutes to come and food was cooked/served within 15 min. However, the server never returned or brought us the rest of our ordered food, so YMMV. Aside from the disappearing server, we did enjoy our meals there.

Chama is a super small and remote with limited food options. I've been here for a week on business and this is the place I could go to again and again. For a small town, the food in Chama is unusually good! The Boxcar excels above! The last three meals have all been excellent and the husband & wife team that run this are great hosts! I've had the cheesesteak, the steak special, and a build your own burger. Each meal was wonderful and I had the pleasure of having a conversation with the wife owner. I can't wait for them to open the inn next door so I can come up here to visit for pleasure instead of business and enjoy more boxcar cuisine.
