Unfortunately Atlantic County Animal Shelter is a high kill animal shelter. Do not try to do a good deed and bring any outdoor cats or especially kittens all outdoor ā€œwildā€œ cats/kittens will be euthanized within a week or less. We did bring a kitten there felt bad and when back to get the kitten and it was euthanized in less than a week. Very heartbreaking so just trying to save someone else from this heartbreaking situation. Try to use Pet Finder or some other way to find the cat or kitten a home, just wish we had had this information prior to bringing the kitten there.

I loved it. The dogs can be very loud until you bring them out then they become these sweet quiet furbabies again. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. It's about 110$ for dogs and 85$ for cats. Extremely cheap and the staff will let you know where they were found for how they were rescued and if they've got their shots already.

They sent my boyfriend home with a sick cat and when we called them to treat the cat (called within first week of adopting) they VISIBLY handed over with green/yellow crust in his eyes and nose , they told him he would either have to surrender the cat or take it to the vet. His family is currently grieving the loss of their family member and the last thing they needed was to be dealing with vet bills the first week of adopting a cat that should be healthy as it leaves the shelter. You could see the crust clear as day the second we got home. However , (we gave it a few days first to see if it would clear up. Not expecting them to ever give us a sick cat!) It hasn’t even been a week of owning the cat and the shelter refused to take ANY responsibility? I have photos from the first day we had him and you can see the infection in his eyes. They then told me he previously had an upper respiratory infection (clearly it wasn’t cured and they sent him out like this) and they basically told us it’s our problem now, or we would have to surrender the cat cause there’s nothing they can do & they do not have a clinic or anything… I spoke with the owner and she had not a care in this world or any other options but to surrender. Pathetic. She also was not being helpful or sincere one bit. He Will NOT be bringing the cat back to that place, he will not be surrendering the cat, & We are now going to take care of this ourselves. with that being said , I wanted to just make sure to share this first if anyone was thinking of adopting from this place. What a shame I have to even be posting this!!!!!

Giving 5 stars because I don’t think any shelter should have a low rate. However, I adopted my sweet cat about 7 months ago from this shelter when I brought him home he had a sneezing problem it was clear he had an upper respiratory infection and they’re common in shelters so that made sense. He got over it and wasn’t sneezing anymore. A few weeks ago my roommate brought home a kitten from this shelter and he had the same problem and now my cat has a sever upper respiratory infection again and is very congested. So it’s clear this shelter must have a bad problem with upper respiratory infections going around that’s not being resolved and I advise everyone to keep this in mind when adopting a kitten or cat from here.

When we first walked in I had a good feeling. The place was clean and caring. We ended up getting a kitten which was a great choice for our family. We have two dogs, one took to the kitten right away and the other took a couple of weeks. We have had the kitten a little over two months now and our whole family is happy. When we adopted they weren't expecting us and we took the kitten that same day. The kitten he was so cute, clean and healthy and up to date on shots, received a chip (hopefully will never need, he's indoor only) and already neutered. I have recommended this place to family and friends and when we are ready we will definitely come here first to get another addition to our family. Keep up the great work.

Do not under any circumstances adopt from this shelter. First and foremost, they’re extremely UNSANITARY!! I adopted a husky there and they told me he was a good dog with an overall positive temperament. Upon taking him home, I came to unfortunately find out HE ATTACKS VICIOUSLY. I brought him back and they gave me a new dog and I still had to pay for the new dog. They said she was a good, happy, healthy dog. Upon bringing her home I noticed a very evident lump on her neck. When contacting the shelter about the matter they told me it’s no longer their problem once I’ve adopted her. I had to spend 720$ to get the lump removed. Instead of removing it themselves, they let my dog suffer under their care. They’re terrible people who don’t care about the animals and they don’t even to background/home checks. Any sociopath could adopt an animal with ease from this place which is not safe for the overall well being of the animals.

The staff was helpful. I adopted a very nice cat when they had "clear the shelters" day in July. Didn't charge me a thing. Normal fee is 85 for a cat but that includes all shots and neutering. Really a pretty decent place compared to other shelters. I am thinking of getting another cat to keep my cat company.

Staff is a bunch of liars, got told we'd be dealing with a manager name John by Ann and turns out no manager name John works there, they first told me the cat was fine and nothing was wrong but he has a severe upper respiratory infection, went to take the cat back within the 30 day they give you and they tried to lie and say we didn't want to fill out the adoption paperwork when none was ever offered, idk maybe it's cause they gave a cat out without going through the proper course that they're trying to cover up but I do not recommend these people. I feel bad for the animals under their care cause the staff is obviously incompetent. I guess it says a lot when we talk to other shelters about them and they get real quiet

Adopted my cat in 2017, best decision I ever made. The Human Society named her Sugar so I kept that name. She is so lovable, and well behaved and also spoiled. I suffer from anxiety but my anxiety attacks are very, very few since I’ve had Sugar. I recommend adopting an animal just for the unconditional love they give. The Atlantic County Human Society in Pleasantville, New Jersey is highly recommended.

Very kind professional people. The facility is very clean compared to another county shelter that I've visited. My first visit was to get my cat a rabies shot last year. I thought that it was being funded by the county for free, but my son kindly explained that a donation would be better. I gladly donated only $20.00 my son offered and I declined, then as I reached into my handbag an employee told me it wasn't necessary. I still did. My cat was given a shot without flenching. I recommend to please keep you furry family vaccinated especially for rabies if their outside cats. Mine isn't, but my town requires it once a year. Also, please foster or adopt. Do not cater to puppy and kitty mills.

I adopted my dog from the Atlantic County Animal Shelter almost 8 years ago and he is such a blessing to our family. We had another dog in our household at the time and the staff members made sure both dogs got along in addition to making sure Happy was all set to go with his shots, him being neutered, etc. before he came home to us.Years later, a volunteer even remembered Happy from the shelter. (This is how much they care about the animals there!)Love this place and would recommend people adopting from here or donating.

I adopted a kitten from there in August and all the staff were so helpful and gracious to me. They made sure everything went smoothly and made me very happy about the whole experience. I've been in volunteering as well and have always had a pleasant experience. Everyone there is caring and really does everything they can for the animals that are there. In response to the fact that they are a kill shelter, I know from experience that they do everything in their power to make sure the animals are taken care of, but as you know they can only do so much. They do give medicine, perform tests, etc. to the best of their abilities, and sometimes that's all that can be done. They are all very wonderful people and I am so thankful to have my beautiful kitten from there. :)

Great people and great pets. Can't over express my appreciation about this place. Never expected this to work out so smoothly. Had my Clay aka Blue for a week now and was told how good this pup was and they were absolutely right. I thank these dedicated people (Joe and staff). I Can't recommend them enough.

If I could rate this shelter lower, I would. My roommate and I recently adopted a cat from this shelter who we were told had no health issues. It was obvious upon adoption that he did in fact have something going on with his eye, but we were told that the vet had checked and he was perfectly not healthy. So we just passed it off as a cataract. Good thing we took him to the vet the same week we adopted him. We were told he had an eye infection as well as two eye ulcers! When we called the shelter they said that they knew about the ulcers and they had medication for him if we had just asked. Why would we have asked about ulcer medication if we were told he was perfectly healthy? He was at the shelter for a MONTH before we adopted him. After two days of medication his eye has improved significantly, leading me to believe that he was being kept there with no medication at all. Now we find out he also has intestinal parasites. We have had him for a week and he has cost us $500. Thank god we love him more than anything. The shelter is telling us there’s nothing they can do and it’s OUR fault. This place is inhumane and does not have the best interest of the animals at heart. Disgusting.

We adopted a dog from here. We where informed the dog was not aggressive and was a great family dog. When we got the dog home he showed many signs of aggression with food, toys, and treats. When we would tell the dog no or try to get him into his kennel he would growl and snip at us. He bit 3 of our family members and growled at all of our kids. When we took the dog back they insistent The dog was never aggressive in any way. They made it out like we just didn’t want the dog. That was not the case. We did all we could until the dog bit the only one in the house that he some what listened to. When asked for the fee back that we paid they basically laughed at us and told us they do not have the money and to take it up with the county. They also informed us they do not adopt out aggressive dogs yet when we were there the 1st time I asked to see a dog and was told no because they don’t trust it around a family. I do not feel they are honest with people who want to rescue from them and just want to remove any animal from their facility as fast as possible regardless of the possible harmful effects it may bring to the animal and the family.

Took our puppy to the free rabies shot clinic. Upon arriving the door was locked after the people that were in front of me walking in had the door unlocked. I tugged on the door once after my wife tried to be greeted by the most rude security guard ever. The place was in disarray, the receptionist was very nice as well as the vet and nurse but it was to chaotic and the rent a cops attitude will keep me away. Just goes to show you free doesn't always mean quality.

I called a reported a puppy I found. They picked her up and told me I’ll be the first person they call when she’s ready for adoption. I called every week like clockwork for six weeks. I was informed of her process. So I called this Tuesday and the lady on the phone put me on hold for four minutes. When she returned back to the phone she told me oh this puppy is no longer up for adoption because the veterinarian is going to take her. I don’t understand how that’s possible when once the puppy was fine I should’ve been first to adopt her. The veterinarian basically decided to keep her for herself. It devastated my children.

We adopted our dog Joe from the animal shelter. He was with us for 8 years before he died of cancer at 17 years old. He was the best dog. I highly recommend adopting a pet from this shelter. Consider an older dog. They seem to understand how lucky they are to find a forever home and give unconditional love.

I went to go donate blankets towels dog food collars cat litter and when I was in there the manager was a little rude and told me they weren't excepting anything but towels and newspapers. This donation was for the animals and they should be appreciate that people are caring for the shelter dogs. Just one volunteer thanked me and the other staff acted like they didn't care

beautiful dogs and cats in this shelter; all of which i would be more than happy to come back to adopt. but, i would literally only come back because of the animals and how i’m very adamant on rescuing. my friend and i came here looking for a dog, of which she would’ve been more than happy to bring in documentation supporting the fact she can properly house the dog and had permission from her parents. we are both 21 years old and legally adults; however, we managed to be treated like children. the woman who ā€œhelpedā€ us today seemed reluctant to supply information on the dogs available and when we asked to see a dog and socialize with him to see how he would be with us one on one, the woman literally looked at us, laughed, and went ā€œha, noā€. at first my friend and i thought she was kidding, but then realized she was being dead serious that we weren’t allowed to see the dog. i’ve been to A LOT of shelters, and every one of them were more than happy to let me socialize with the animal to see how they react to us. also, need i remind you, that it is IMPORTANT for an animal to socialize with other human beings instead of being locked in a cage all day so they can become acclimated to other humans and have a lesser chance of becoming aggressive.i would come back, only for the animals, and i truly hope they treat those interested in adopting better because this is a living creature’s livelihood in their hands.oh, and she has already adopted two dogs from this shelter. had no problem before?very disappointed with the service provided.

I am losing my house to fforeclosure & had to surrender my cat. I called up to see if I could drop the cat off & was told yes. I called again this morning to make sure & was once again told yes. When I arrived I was told that they were not accepting intake that they were full. I explained the situation & was treated horribly. I said that I didn't want to just let the cat loose that's why I was there & that turned into them saying I was going to let the cat loose. They made me out to be a terrible person for trying to make sure the cat had a chance. Its bad enough I was losing everything but to have them try & make me out to be a horrible person because I was trying to help the cat not be homeless like me is freaking ridiculous. I pray no one ever lands in this situation but if you do please do not take your animal here.
