I drove 90 minutes to get here from our house right after 26 inches of wet heavy snow that took out our power. I called to verify that they had a specific generator in stock. the kind woman I spoke to said they did in fact have that. I asked if they could hold it while I drove there I was informed they could not. I asked if I could pay over the phone, and was once again told no. I was informed I could order online and that would hold it. I ordered the generator online and proceeded to go up there. We finally got there, went in, spoke to a nice gentleman who asked our name confirmed the order and went to get the generator. He came back after 5 minutes and said the one they had on the floor was just an empty box, but not to worry the system said they had another one. He spent another 20 minutes looking for it. He came back and informed me they did not have it and apologized profusely. Obviously I was not happy. What turned this from a 1 star review into a 5 star is how they dealt with it and the genuine customer service I got. He went to find another generator that they had in stock. It was roughly 20% smaller than what we wanted, but our generator had just died so we didn't have much of a choice. That didn't stop them from taking $100 off of the price and loading it into the vehicle for us. They made me feel much better about the entire situation. They even gave me some Excedrin they had, because I developed a migraine. I wish I could do more than this review, and I wish I had gotten the name of the gentleman who helped us, but thank you for making a bad situation much better and manageable.

This store is great for multiple reasons. Firstly, they have literally everything. I am here multiple times per week which saves me the 30 plus minute trip to the city to visit a big box store. Second, the staff is friendly and super knowledgeable. Lastly, they carry a few items I can't find anywhere else including unfinished wooden curtain rod brackets and the Magnolia line of paint. Save yourself some time and shop local.

Great place if you need something and don't feel like going all the way to Home Depot and navigating that huge warehouse.

Excellent hardware store that has pretty much anything you can imagine: paint, spackle, electrical, chains, tools, cleaning supplies, vacuum cleaner bags/belts, kitchen supplies, outdoor thermometers, etc. All that and a SUPER HELPFUL, SUPER FRIENDLY STAFF who ACTUALLY KNOW where things are and how stuff works! They are never far off and will go out of they're way to help you with anything you need! Worth the drive if you only have a small hardware store. Highly recommend and I've never left disappointed!

A great hardware store that may not have 100 of everything but I’d bet they have a few of everything you can imagine. They have a staff they makes every attempt to help you locate things your trying to find, a staff that likely knows your trade or DIY home project. Do drop in and find what home town service feels like, you won’t be lost as often the case in the huge box stores

Very young staff goofing around, but they did very quickly try to help me find what I was looking for. Definitely is the place to go around here if you can afford the high prices

This store has become a local store to avoid, a nearly useless place to obtain hardware unless you know exactly what you want. All of the older, knowledge a staff are now gone, seemingly replaced by teenagers and 20-somethings. I went to Rockys at 4:30PM one day this week, and there was a teenager at the register and another one roaming the aisles looking at his cell phone every few minutes. Not once did this kid ask if he could help me. The store manager is MIA. The paint department was shut down with its lights turned off. When the store was Clarke's Hardware, any number of competent staff were right there to offer their assistance. Rocky's has been an unmitigated disaster for New London, the painful result of what can happen when a locally-owned business sees big bucks and sells out to a chain. The community lost Blueberry Bagel to Dunkin, Cricenti's to Hannaford, R.P. Johnson to Belletetes, Clarke's to Rocky's to name a few.

The best stocked hardware store in the area. Unfortunately, all the knowledgeable staff have retired recently. Don't expect any experienced assistance. A sign of our times.

This is a Store that is Family Owned and Operated in our Small Town. They make you feel like Family when you enter and are always there to answer questions. A nice experience when shopping! Also , there always tends to be unique items here and there, that I've never thought of that ads to the experience.

I'm getting on in years, and treasure old time hardware stores of the past, the kind where the folks behind the counter knew everything you needed to know and where to find anything you might want. Clarke's is just a wonderful store. The staff are unfailingly friendly and very quick to offer assistance. If you need a particular screw or fitting, they either know right where it sits or they will find it for you promptly. Keep asking questions about how to install it, or anything else about your To Do list and you will get your answers. You might save a bit by driving a long way to a big box store but you surely will not get the help and advice that is always on offer at Clarke's. I love this place and you probably will too!

The staff here is amazingly helpful---more helpful than any store I've ever been to. On top of that, they have a surprisingly wide selection. Just about any home needs, except lumber, can be fulfilled here.

Nothing can be said about this place unless it uses the term - EXCELLENT. The staff is tremendous, the selection is extensive, and the place is perfectly arranged. Even if, an item is not readily found, the personnel will explore the place or locate it via the web, and then have it delivered ASAP to either the location or to your home. Thus, the place is A#1 for service and assistance. AMEN

One of the best hardware stores we've ever been to. They have way beyond hardware! You name it....they've got it! And the sales people are the best! They do their utmost to find what you need, and even check the internet if need be.

Knowledgeable and professional staff. Sometimes a little pricey, but I don’t usually mind because of the convenience and great staff! They cram a ton of stuff in that little store! Just be careful of the drivers in the parking lot.....

You know you're in a small New England town when the local hardware store's been owned by the same family for an eon & it's staffed by local soccer moms, "Mr. Fix-Its" & retirees. [The moms only want to work while the kids are in school; the Mr. Fix-Its enjoy the employee discount & helping others navigate their DIY projects; the retirees either need supplemental income and/or want to be with people.] Local hardware stores are the backbone of many Hallmark Movie Channel "New girl moves to quiet town to start over; buys rundown colonial that she's going to renovate -- all by herself, mind you -- as a way of healing from whatever G-rated "tragedy" she's running from; obviously she'll need to shop the local hardware store; enter hunky handyman who just happens to walk by at the right moment & save her from a sea of polyester, nylon & foam paintbrushes ("if you're planning on painting the Sistine Chapel, that's a great choice" he says, as she giggles awkwardly & admits she just needs to cover a "horrendous mustard & avocado" colored wall that some inspired bed & breakfast owner thought would be evocative..."Oh, you must be the proud new owner of The Olde Windstalker Inn"....and we're all supposed to ignore the forced chemistry between these two....) ~ even without ever watching one of these mind-numbing dime store plotted Disney inspired flicks, we all know the story. Clarke's Hardware Store has all the small-town friendliness & quintessential local characters, set in a picturesque New England village straight out of a Norman Rockwell print, but what will surprise any unsuspecting visitor is the massive inventory & size of this "bygone era" staple. The place is now triple the size it was when my very own "working single mom" was employed there 30-plus years ago. Now I don't know if you'll find EVERYTHING you need here, but there's a very good chance you will, and if nothing else, it's definitely worth trying before driving a good 30-minutes in either direction to get to the closest faceless big box store. And at least you'll feel, if only for 10 minutes, that America's society isn't all scandal-loving, fame-mongering, wealth-obsessed, soulless people. Here, if you frequent Clarke's Hardware, you'll soon feel as though you stepped into that other New England establishment "where everybody knows your name"...
