EDIT: DEPPY IS BACK. Manager was super helpful once we could finally get a hold of one. Front desk person was super confrontational and rude, tried to mislead the people who came in into coming after the facility would have been closed for the day as she was mad about the reviews we had left. Deceptive, vindictive, and unprofessional behavior from her all around.A dog my work had housed for a rescue got picked up and brought here after an incident with his foster, and a chip error led to him not being returned to us. But even once it was fixed they refused to return him as man in Louisiana who was on the chip claimed it was his dog. Deputy was previously saved from an abusive household where he was beaten and we don’t know for certain if this man is connected to his original home or not. His medical bills after he was rescued was around $5000. We housed Deputy for over 8 months after he was saved by Lost Ball Canine Rescue. The most frustrating part is through the entire process NHS has been inconsistent with the information given to those working to get deputy returned. Is it 3 days before he can be returned? Is it 5? Will he even be given to Lost Ball or some other agency? Do not send him back there, give Deputy back.

Thank you Nebraska Humane Society for this perfect kitten! We fell in love with him the first time we saw him but he had an upper respiratory infection. I kept checking every morning to see if he was available yet… sure enough there he was and we rushed that morning to go get him! He’s the perfect fit for our family. Thank you!

Doing a great service to the community at large. Best place to adopt a pet. Must See Granite Cat Bench.

Edit: The girl at the front desk “zoe” was immediately hostile with me the second we walked in the door today. Unwilling to help or be reasonable. The manager was very nice and was able to double check the chip and confirm i was the owner, very glad deputy is home where he belongs. 😌This place clearly does not care or do what’s in the best interest of the pets in their care. Nhs picked up one of our malinois rescues and denied us access to retrieve the dog. They instead tried to contact the man who did over 5 thousand dollars in abuse to the dog and told him he would be allowed access to dog. Showed plenty of proof that this dog belonged to us but still refused to let us pick him up. I came the second they opened and didn’t leave until they closed and at no point during that time was a manager or anyone smarter than a rock available to help me. What a sad excuse for a “humane society”.

Adopted my cat when he was five from the humane society. The history of my cat is unknown. He was five when I adopted him. it has been five years. My vet said he is a healthy cat. He had some dental issues but that is common in most older cats. It took him time to adjust to me, trust me, and snuggle. But now he loves cuddles, meows when I come home after a long day, and is living his best life. He is seriously the best company. Before I adopted him I was skeptical about owning a cat. I had to figure out a couple of things once I adopted him.He has his claws which I fully support. But he scratched any furniture that had soft material such as cloth. I replaced that furniture with fake leather furniture and he leaves it alone. He used to rip a hole in the bottom of my box spring mattress, couch, and living room chair. He liked to crawl inside the furniture once he had a hole torn in the bottom of it. After I took him to the vet and realized he was having severe dental pain and had that fixed, he behaved much better. I also made some changes regarding furniture.I got him some cat trees where he could hide and I bought a platform bed, which doesn't require a box spring mattress. The other thing is he doesn't like living with another cat even after being introduced properly. His entire personality changes if he has to share his human with another cat. Immediately after moving out on our own again he was back to his calm and loving self.I just wanted to share this in case it helps someone else with their new kitty. Don't assume all of the behavioral issues are the pets issues to change. Pet owners need to take accountability and make accommodations, too. The blanket in his picture was made by a volunteer when I adopted him. I was at the humane society today and the lady who greeted me and helped me was very nice and professional.

Today marks 3 weeks of having Mr. Aries as a member of our happy little pack. The poor guy was not doing well in the shelter and was in rough shape when I picked him up but he has been THRIVING since. The staff was very thourough and helpful during the initial visit. I also appreciate the steps and time taken during the intro with our current household dogs to make sure Aries would be a good fit. He is the biggest sweetheart and I'm glad everything worked out so he can have the loving home he deserves ❤️.

Staff are friendly. However, we currently have an issue with licensing dept. This is one of our three cats needs to get her rabies shot (as they stated, she has been previously late by 4 yrs). This isn't accurate as this began during Covid-19 and continued when I've been extremely ill since 2022 through now (my health is still so bad that I'm unable to drive or work, etc). We were told then by staff to contact their licensing staff member to ensure that we don't get visited by them at our home to enforce it (rabies for one of our three cats). Also, it is extremely impossible to catch her to the vet for anything (even to get the rabies shot) as well as our cat's health has been impacted by doing this (trying to catch her & take her to the vet). We almost lost her because she stopped eating each and every time we tried to catch her.

The restrictions on the dogs we're not posted on the website. Didn't find out when we were in love with could have no children in the home until after we asked to meet her.. we did adopt a lovely boxer crossShe is mild and polite. House trained in response to a few simple commands

Absolutely awful experience. So heavy handed and bureaucratic. Please stop treating everyone like they are an animal abuser because a small few do it. In fact, it is probably easier for an animal abuser to get a pet than for me a person with a steady job / income.Wasted 45 mins there TWICE! Asked to see one cat and the volunteer "Adoption Counselor" took me all over on a bait and switch. In 2024, pet ownership and the process shouldn't be only for those who are neurotypical. Do better!!

I volunteer here. You would be surprised if you saw what goes on behind the scenes. The workers and the volunteers really care about the animals, we treat each animal with care and respect even if they are brought here under terrible conditions. My job is to clean the poop from the cages, and change the bedding. I also give the dogs fresh water and food. I love the job. Sometimes after my shift, I go in the cages and spend time with the animals, and try to comfort them. It can be scary for them to be there, and so I go in the kennels so they don't feel alone.

told them we wanted a dog good with kids, they said they knew the perfect one and we ended up adopting a dog that the behavioralists did not recommend for kids (and they didn't tell us why not until we went back and asked, and they simply said "we don't really know how she is, it's just to be safe"). Dog ended up trying to nip a kid and now we may have to give her up. This could've been avoided if they had run more tests on the dog or had been more transparent. Still don't know how they tested the dog or whether they even did.

My 5 month old pit puppy is missing since March 10,2023. He's a brindle. I've been coming in every other day to check that He's not there. The staff there has been sooo comforting and supportive. If I haven't lost hope yet, it's because these lady's have been pushing me forward to not give up and keep looking for him. There's many, many beautiful dogs for adoption. If you don't have an animal, this is the place to get him or her.If I could, I would own a place just like humane society and adopt them all.

I gave it a 2 because the part of them that does the cremation is pretty great in my opinion. They have made it as simple as possible, they have a great set of options, and they are pretty affordable. But the way they do the adoptions is asinine. My dog recently died that I adopted 12 years ago down in Tennessee and I brought him there to be cremated. When I first got that dog we went to go get a smaller animal like a rabbit and they had these dogs from the rescue outside. I was reluctant to get a dog until I saw him and instantly we had a connection so I adopted him. We went to go pick up the ashes on Friday and my youngest (she’s 4) wanted to go look at the animals and I was against getting another dog considering my last one just passed but I was fine with looking. The last room we went into I had the exact same thing happen between myself and another dog. We met him and liked him so we set a meeting the following day so all our kids and my wife’s dog could meet him. Knowing he was a big dog that was very in your face when first meeting and very mouthy (not a biter) I knew it would be best to get him a strong toy he could focus on while him and our other dog got used to each instead of him only being focused on our other dog so I bought him one on the way to the appointment. He did great with all the kids and not bad with our other dog but he was hyper focusing on her and given his size she was getting a bit overwhelmed so we separated them for a minute. He then came back over to myself and my kids who also fell in love with him and I gave him the toy and the problems with him hyper focusing on our other dog stopped. They were within 2-3 feet of each other without being held with 0 problems. Then the worker who has no clue what they’re doing or talking about took the toy away from him and stated “No toys” and the same issues happened. It wasn’t violent issues, our other dog just wasn’t use to another dog having more energy than them and started getting grumpy when overwhelmed. They then denied us getting this dog that our entire family has now fallen in love with. I think it’s crazy that organizations will try and guilt trip people for going to a breeder but will then make you jump through hoops to get a dog and when you go above and beyond will still tell you no because they don’t know what they’re doing.

I just wanted to say I really appreciate the staff there that assisted our family with finding our new family dog, formerly Chessy, now Lucia. Lucia made herself right at home. The kids already enjoying cuddling with her and she loves every minute of it. When we went in today it was for another dog we were interested but then we fell in love with Lucia (Chessy) thank you for filling our hearts

My dog was nowhere near a lady that said my dog bit her. They wouldn't let me see the fake bite or know who the lady was. They told me I would have to sign papers or go to court. Now my dog has a false bite report and I had no choice. My dog is not aggressive. It's not my dog who bit the lady. But I happened to be outside and she was able to follow me home. The officer was not able to let me know any information at all. They were never available to answer the phone and get the report off my record.

EDIT: zoe at the front desk of animal services is THE WORST, very rude from the jump. Manager was nice and understanding.honestly every person I’ve ever talked to has never had a nice thing to say about this rescue. they are currently refusing to give the rescue I work with their dog back. first it was “the owner on the chip is not the rescue” well got that fixed and now its “well we have to hold him for 5 days” like seriously we are just trying to get this dog who’s had a very hard life back home and he does NOT do well around strangers. justice for deppy

We came in looking for a male guinea pig to bond with our current piggy. The guinea pig we originally came to meet wasn't quite a match and seemed to be happier solo, but the staff there introduced us to a bunch of other guinea pigs. The staff was amazing and kind, and genuinely knew their animals! They found us a sweet piggy who wasn't doing well with his current friends, and we couldn't be happier. He was the perfect match and is now being spoiled rotten! The staff here doesn't treat you like a client, they treat you like family. They are wonderful people and I was so impressed.

Justice for Deputy. He was saved by the Lost Ball Canine Rescue. His old owners beat and abused him. The Nebraska Humane Society fully intend to send him back their household despite the fact that he has been fostered into a new loving home for nearly a year. His chip was attached to both the abusive household and current household but because the old owners claimed him first they want to send him to Louisiana. The chip malfunctioned and now he could be sent back into the hands that first hurt him. If you ever need to surrender an animal for whatever reason do NOT bring them here. For cats I recommend checking out the NALA Foundation, they’re all lovely people that truly love cats. For dogs I recommend Muddy Paws Rescue. As far as adoption goes, the more animals into loving homes the better. I just wish that Deppy could go back to his.

I adopted my bestest bud here! They were super helpful when I came, I’m a first time dog owner and they were very informative and supportive. I went through the process pretty quickly shortly after meeting my new found friend, which was appreciated. Their social media presence is also spectacular!I adopted my dog when he was 2 years old, so his history is unknown. They just said that his previous owner abandoned him at a friends house and the friend surrendered him.His report card wasn’t fully filled out (he was at the shelter for maybe a week) so I wasn’t too sure about what behavioral issues he may or may not have. I was told he had food aggression, but he lets me take away his food and bones without any qualms. He takes food from my hand so gently and has not shown any type of food aggression over the years. Maybe him being at the shelter just put him on edge?He is reactive toward some dogs, but we’ve been working on that and he’s doing so great! On his report card it didn’t state how he did around other dogs, so I was curious how that would go. Just know if you’re adopting for the first it can be a lot of work and you have to be able to pour in time with your new furry friend! Be patient with them if they do have some issues, they’re trying their hardest.

I am deeply concerned about the response (lack of) I received when trying to report an animal attack by a pack of 4 dogs loose in my neighborhood. Animal Control needs to streamline the process to make a report. I was treated like I was a pain in the butt, rather than a victim. I hope those dogs don’t hurt anyone else, especially the kids in the neighborhood as I tried multiple ways to report to no avail.

Took my pet to be cremated on a wendsday they said 7 days, maybe 10, I called, and she told me she was cremated and has been ready for days noone called me like they said they would. I've never had a good experience with the humane society, but I did adopt two turtles when I picked up her remains

I adopted two cats and they told me that a few of the cats had the flu and I could bring them back and they would treat them considering it was because of the other cats that they also had in the adoption center. So 2 weeks go by and one of the cats has issues symptoms of the flu and also some eye irritation I call they let me know to go in I go in. Keep in mind it’s a long drive from my house. but I’ll do anything for these kitties I go in I let them know everything that’s been happening and they basically told me that since I already adopted the cat they couldn’t treat it. they have a 30 day policy where I could return a cat and exchange it for a new one, but they can’t treat the kitty that I have I understand taking it to the vet, but why would say one thing? And do the other.

Amazing facility for some amazing animals that deserve all the love they can get. You’re able to go in the rooms with cats and open their kennels, love that! Wish you could have more 1 on 1 experience with the dogs but they can be aggressive so i understand that. I wish the kept all the hyper dogs and all the dogs that are obviously scared senseless separate but at least they’re somewhere safe.

They never can come to any calls down in north omaha they leave our calls unanswered!!! STACEY Say is unimportant then HUNG up in our face. Shame on you.!!. Very unprofessional and unethical Stacey if that is even your real name!!! If you don’t like your job find another rather than be rude to the community!! I’ve called about a poor cat that is dead and its going on day 2 that it just sitting there in. She thought she could talk to me any type of way and when I delivered it back she was soo applaud. Hold you self accountable and worry about helping the community when they call…

give deputy boy back!!! never heard good things about this shelter, and this just solidified it for me. why- after being shown proof- would you grant a previously abusive owner access to the dog they abused, instead of the shelter he was at? and now he's on a 5 day hold? for what, exactly? absolutely INSANE to call yourself a "humane" society when you're nothing CLOSE to humane.

When to them cause I live in Douglas county and they have a farm cat program. We caught 2 feral kittens one has become a love the other mean as sin. Both need to find a home. Took them here thinking they would help nope I dont live in Omaha so no help for me. They give you a list to try calling if you ask for it and all those only help their own county only. You shouldnt be that large of a place and only get to help your city.... what about those of us in Bennington, Waterloo, Valley, or other little towns. Who do we go to to help control animal population and strays? This place has gone down hill with what they offer. They have less that 2 full pages of cats not like they have a full house but no help here. I used to love and praise this place but today has left a sour taste in my mouth. They wonder why people are letting animals lose in the outdoor area or leaving them in front of the doors after hours. You no longer help the part of your community that needs you way to go.

This place is very unhelpful and disorganized, which is sad because there are innocent animals in their care and things should be the opposite of how they are. I’d recommend midlands humane society in council bluffs. People actually help and welcome volunteers and seem to care more about the animals. The NHS claims they “run on volunteers” but when you try to reach somebody about helping out you get absolutely nothing. Been consistently reaching out via email, phone calls, and voicemails about wanting to help out and volunteer but I just get ignored. If this is how they treat someone trying to help them without getting paid, I can only imagine how the poor animals are treated at their facility. Super disappointed. Nebraska humane society CAN and SHOULD do better!
