I have been a long standing and supportive customer of REI for more than 20 years. My husband worked for them for many years, and they have been a foundation in my outdoor adventures. REI was the only place my husband and I registered for our wedding. I am sad to be writing this review.Today when I stopped by to return a snowboarding jacket the interaction with the cashier was less than pleasant. John, was initially friendly until I mentioned that I would like to return the item and then he became much less friendly. His tone was demeaning. He reminded me several times that my return “could appear to some” as “taking advantage of the return policy”. Please note: this jacket had only been worn a few times and still had the tags. I informed him my husband and I have been members for a long time and understood the old and new policy regarding returns and my return was within my rights. He continues to make statements that felt pointed and left me feeling uncomfortable. I had to intentionally maintain calm but inside felt angry by the way he was treating me.I am saddened by this experience. I have not and do not take “advantage” of their return policy and understand that they have a more relaxed policy than most. One of the many reasons I love REI!I will consider other outdoor retailers in Bozeman before shopping at this store in the future. Regardless of policy the way I was spoken to was unacceptable.

It’s MLK Monday and -20. No one wants to be outside. My husband who is sick and I were desperate for help. We lost our Thule key due to our own careless ways and hoping for some help and direction. We purchased our Thule last year at REI in Bozeman so that was our first stop. The young guys at the sports shop handed us a ring of 100+ keys and said one of these keys should fit. We offered the millennials $$ to help us and due to “liability issues” they couldn't. Hard to believe but sad if true. My husband was in no condition to stand there in -20 degree weather so we opted to find a locksmith. Our angel in disguise was at Bozeman Safe and Lock by the name of Amy.I hope my son would offer more help to a bunch of senior citizens in desperate straitsthan these millennials did at REI. They need to hire older folks who care and willing to go the extra mile.

Shopping at this REI has been just as pleasant as shopping at other stores in the chain. They have high quality items normally are reasonable some are expansive because they are higher quality then normal or will last you forever. The employees there helped with all the questions I have. Though they are not dog friendly so really the only reason I might not shop her if I have my dog or need to by something for my dog. Other then that there rewards program is pretty good and I haven’t had a bad experience to date.

Neck gator, hat and down sweater, all for less than the sweater retail! So glad I didn't miss this smartwool sale!

The customer service here rivals that of chick-fil-a. The staff here are helpful and are focused on providing you with the knowledge to make a education decision on what to buy. Plus if you haven't check out the "Garage Sale" they have half price gear that is slightly used but in grand condition.

Support Local businesses and check out some of the local shops! REI isn't what it used to be. It feels like a Walmart for outdoor gear now. Plus the staff was very rude.

Signed up for the REI card because it sounded like it had a lot of benefits for loyal customers. I had already waited in line and didn’t want to run back to grab something out of the yard sale area because I was in a rush. When I left the store I called and asked an associate if you could put yard sale items on hold. She assured me yes, for 48 hours. I do not have a vehicle and worked very hard to get back to the store less than 24 hours later only for who I presume was the manager to tell me that was not protocol and she already spoken with the associate and the item had been put back on the shelf. Of course, it was gone. I told them I was very frustrated that they did not call me to let me know. The manager could have easily called or just let protocol slip the one time instead of me wasting my time, borrowing a friends car, driving there to be told “yeah we don’t have that.” Not even a sorry. Regretting signing up for the REI card now. Seems like a waste of $30. Don’t know if I’ll return. Maybe I’ll just stick to shopping online.

The company is extremely woke and sexualizes the shopping experience with pronoun badges. The last place I want to go to.

Not location specific, but Sad to hear REIs no longer carry Sockwells. That's what I spent the bulk of my shopping on there ($30 socks), plus I referred patients there for fun compression socks.Guess Amazon strikes again.Location specific: So I found a lovely Smartwool sweater, but noticed it had a snag in the middle of the chest. I brought it to the counter to inquire about the socks and see if they had any others. They did not. The sticker MSRP was $125. The clerk did not offer to see if a discount could be applied for the damaged one since they did not have others in stock. She mentioned I could order online.Unfortunately, if you keep referring people to buy online, they will, and the store will decline or close, which also means no employees. But also, if I have to go online to buy something, I'm going to check Amazon first. The same sweater was $93 on Amazon and would arrive to my door sooner than REI. I'd like to support businesses outside Amazon, but what's being offered? I went to the store and was not offered anything, simply told to go online, which I could have done anyhow and saved the gas to get to town.

I gave it 1 star because there wasn't an option to give no stars. We walked in a half an hour before they closed and we're confronted by a young kid who probably was the dishwasher that proclaimed that they "like to get home too" so they stop taking customers at 9:30.

REI is great and this store packs a lot into its small size, but goodness the cashiers need to work on their small talk. We don't all vote Democrat so just because I look affluent and talk like an educated person, don't assume I'm on your side. Thanks.

Thank you to the team working on 1/27/23. We arrived in Bozeman to start a point-to-point trip through Yellowstone NP and two of us lost luggage. Everyone in the store helped us quickly locate the essentials we needed to replace. We appreciate your help!

Went in with an urgent cargo box purchase and Matt and another young man working in that section were very helpful! Matt even helped us with setting it up and coming back out into the cold a couple of extra times to help us figure out the locking mechanism. Overall, the cargo box saved us as were about to drive across Canada to get home to Alaska. Very much appreciate the last minute and prompt service. Highly recommend!

I was expecting a huge outdoor wonderland here and was somewhat shocked to find that the REI here was smaller than the one we have in Virginia Beach. Far less to choose from and a smaller footprint in general.Staff were friendly and really went out of their way to help my husband find some hiking socks.

Customer service has gotten abysmal. Went into the store tonight to look for a specific item. Employees standing around with hands in their pockets having a conversation. Tried to get their attention to ask where I could find the item. Just turned away from me. When they were done, just walked off even when I followed one of them to ask. I guess I'll just order off of Amazon.

There are incredibly friendly people who are trying to help anyone and everyone enjoy the beauty of a life outdoors. If they don’t have it in store, the staff are knowledgeable about online products as well and they are happy to help place an order. I absolutely love REI

We travel in a van and rarely miss an REI along the way. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. I’ve rarely purchased anything there that I don’t still have. And I love their mission. Thank you REI !

Yes it's the almighty REI; the elite and pricey outdoor store. But. THIS store is made hometown by it's people. They love to solve, teach, exceed expectations and chat about our town. It makes all the difference. And prices can be competitive if you know how to REI.

The staff here is always friendly and helpful. I’ve enjoyed my last few visits to the store. Today we had a complicated return and Gary really helped us out! Because of the great customer service, this is my favorite of the many Bozeman outdoor stores to shop at!

Had an absolutely phenomenal time at REI! Went in prepping to camp for my first time and had the pleasure of having Stryder help me. This man is a wealth of knowledge and before I knew it 2 hours had gone by and the store was almost closing. He helped me find all the basic things I will ever need! I would highly recommend any one getting into backpacking or camping for this first time go to this store and ask for Stryder!

Astonishing to see thriving businesses like REI criminally understaffed. By no fault of any employee I waited 30 minutes to talk to someone to try on one pair of shoes. If you can't get enough employees then clearly you're not paying enough. A business that sells at full MSRP and is growing yet don't have the courage to pay living wage here in Bozeman. And great store to go to if you're part of the upper echelon in the community but not for working class people.

I have always had wonderful experiences at REI. Love their gear and their staff, very friendly and accommodating. Usually I will go in and know exactly what I need. This weekend we needed a little help. We were looking to purchase skiis and boot for our kids. The gentleman that helped us was very nice, we showed him what skiis we had and what type of boots we needed. He brought out a few options and we had the kids try them on.He moved on to help a couple guys with goggles and it seemed from their conversation they were friends. We couldn't get his attention to help us with the boots so we made a decision on what he had brought.Unfortunately when we got home he had given us the complete wrong boot for the style of bindings, even though we had shown him the skiis and bindings.I love REI we have been members for over 10 years and while the associate was friendly enough, he had no idea what he was doing.Just a little more training needed. I will update this review based on future visits because REI will always be a favorite outdoors store for us but I thought it important to share this experience.

We were in a bind when we purchased a bike rack that didn’t have all the correct installation pieces enclosed in the box. Matt L. completely saved our Moab trip this weekend when he hooked us up with the best trey style double bike rack! His customer service and professionalism were top notch, we are so grateful and love our new bike rack - Thank you Matt!

It is always wonderful to shop here. The only problem is the checkout experience. The aggressive nature by which employees are expected to push the rewards program is truly painful. It really makes me not wish to shop here. I would happily spend several magnitudes more here a year if it was effortless to give them my money.

My husband surprised me for my birthday with a new hiking pack! Jane was super helpful. I had no idea you could be fitted for a pack. She taught me all I needed to know to find the right fit! I can’t wait to get my new pack next week! Thanks Jane!

Poor customer service and a disconnect between their corporate/online store has left me choosing to shop elsewhere. We ordered two tents online and selected pickup from the store. They shipped separately to the store. When the first arrived, I picked it up and noticed they had the other one in stock (several). I asked the rep at the counter if I could grab one in stock. She said she could not see that I ordered anything else. Instead of looking more, that was all she could do. I looked up the order on my phone and gave her the order number; same order number as the tent that already arrived and she gave to me. After all that, she tells me I can buy a tent from their store full price and return the other tent after it came in. I told her this experience was frustrating and her and another associate blew it off. Very unprofessional. I started shopping at REI over 20 years ago in Atlanta, GA and that's my last experience with them. Get new staff at your Bozeman store and create a better experience for your customer no matter where they shop with you.

I love this store. The employees seem genuinely interested in anything outdoors related. I've not been able to find an item on the shelves a couple times now and the employees went above and beyond to make sure we hunted it down. The first time, going as far as digging through the warehouse shelves to locate said item. Highly recommend.

Really Terrible Lazy young Female shoe department employees X 2 , experienced today. First I asked if they had any mens slip on style shoes…No. Just these slippers and these sandals. Wrong! I found exactly one pair myself in his size on this rack. Then I asked yet another girl there to grab the matching right shoe for me. She returned, with the box and set it on a random chair then set the one that was on the rack on top of the box. Extremely Annoyed and found the entire $130.00 spent in this Bozeman REI a shame.
