It has been about two years since this happened, but I am still incredibly frustrated. I took my stray cat here to get fixed. I was unsure of the gender, but thought it could be a girl. When I got to the animal hospital, I made sure to tell the receptionist that I was not sure of the gender and if they could please check before doing anything to my cat. I was brushed off by her, which already bothered me. I then get a phone call from the vet later that day notifying me that my cat was in fact a boy. They figured this out by TRYING TO SPAY HIM and finding out he didn’t have the correct anatomy then. My poor baby had a giant incision along his belly and was put through unnecessary pain. They obviously did not double check before the procedure, despite me requesting this as I was unsure of the gender. No one apologized. Fortunately, my sweet baby healed well and is perfectly healthy, but I would never take another pet here again.

We had to put our family dog down and they got the medication dosage wrong. She woke up while my dad and brother were saying goodbye and started freaking out and biting the tubes in her legs and they had to come in and do it a second time. The vet didn’t even have the decency to apologize for it. Will never take another animal there again.

I forgot my dogs meds at home while on vacation and these guys helped me get some meds! 10/10 taking my pups here if they need something while visiting my mom!!

I took my cat Precious to them in March, they treated him with the utmost care, unfortunately there was nothing else we could do for him because his heart was failing. My Precious passed away April 13,2018. When I get ready to get another pet, I would take it to Kirksville Small Animal Hospital.It is now Oct, 2018, I have not yet decided to get another pet. In the 9 months preceding April, I lost my Loving Husband, the house we lived in for 30 years burnt to the ground and then my Little Buddy Precious passed away. I have thought a couple of times about another pet (not quite ready yet). I will take it to Kirksville Small Animal Hospital when I do get one though.March 8,2020 I finally adopted a Kitten in Oct 1999 that was 7 weeks old from Pet Smart. The little guy had a rough start, was sick off and on for a couple of months. Took him to Kirksville Small Animal Hospital (several times) and they got him all fixed up and healthy. He is now 6 1/2 months old, weighs almost 8 lbs, full of energy and is the light of my life. I will take him back to KSAH when needed.

Had a great first experience here. They were the only place who could get my dog in same day as I was very concerned about her not feeling well. The vet was very calm which I always appreciate because it helps soothe my anxious pup. Luna immediately felt better after her visit. Thank you staff!

I've been taking Kitty here yearly for vaccinations & checkups for about 6 years & will continue ... the staff is friendly & professional, I've had no trouble making appointments (even for a semi-emergency same-day), & they treat Kitty very gently. (They also were kind enough not to "ban" me when I brought in a stray for chip-scanning, & she proceeded to literally "climb the walls" among other "activities" !) 5 stars !

My first visit was no entirely satisfactory and I did not think that I would come back. I had a reason to return within a week and this time my experience was entirely different. This visit Dr. Doak saw my pet, who was a four month old collie, and she was wonderful. She spent time with me and she listened attentively to my concerns and answered my questions. As a result of this experience I have recommended her to all my friends who have pets. She is the old fashioned school of vets and that is appreciated by pet owners. She is the closest to James Herriot, All Things Great and Small. I recommend her without reservation. I gave the review four stars instead of five only because my first visit was not up to par.

My boyfriend and I have been taking our pets to Dr. Doakes for several years. She has prolonged our cat's life by several years with her quick diagnosis and care. Today was a sad day as we had to say goodbye to our beloved Whiskers, and Dr. Doakes & staff (didn't catch their names,) were so wonderful. They even offered a clay pawprint which was quickly done. For such a tender and sad moment Dr. Doakes handled it so well and made us feel at ease with finally saying goodbye.

My fiancé and I took my puppy here for the first few months we had her. Before we took her here she was well mannered and not aggressive in the slightest. When we first started taking her here we noticed that the vet tech who came out to get her was cold and distant not only with us but especially with our dog. She would never pet her or try to comfort her she would just drag our dog inside. We decided to look past it. When the vet came out to talk to us she mentioned that our dog was a bit rowdy, however we thought that was normal as it was her first time in a strange place getting shots and other unpleasant procedures. The next time we brought her the the vet tech continued to be cold and uncomfortable towards us and especially our dog. When we got our dog back that appointment we were informed that our dog is “aggressive” and that to cope with it they wrapped a rope around her nose in order to restrain her. We’ve switched vets and they’ve had no such problems. They even said she behaves perfectly for them. I never write reviews but I think it’s important to share our story as in my opinion it reflects a severe lack of ability to be accommodating/flexible and even borderline malpractice. Our dog will now forever be labeled as aggressive even though she’s nothing of the sort.

The staff where really nice but their no payment plan is screwed up they turned away my dog who was bleeding out and my kittens who have had diarrhea for 4 days and my cat with a uti who couldn't pee because I couldn't afford to bring them there at that moment. If they really cared about animals they wouldnt turn away a dying dog. I brought all my animals here and have always paid my bill in full. The fact they dont have a payment plan is pathetic. Emergency vet visit happen but to expect $400 or more straight up is pathetic I can go to the doctors and and make a payment plan but not to the vet's save my animal. Greedy

Kirksville Small Animal Hospital has been the major care provider for a geriatric k9 that passed a few years ago and my two mixed breed rescues I got as puppies almost 4 years ago. The care they have provided for them has been top notch.The staff is great, friendly and very caring of their furry patients and their 2 legged counterparts. Do not hesitate to take your beloved pets to them.

Lovely staff, great service. The doctor, nurse, and receptionist were all very helpful and friendly. We came to Kirksville on a camping trip and needed some emergency treatment, so they aren’t are normal vet, but we kind of wish they were! They took our concerns very seriously and asked thorough questions. Pricing was decent. Glad we took our dog here! Thanks Dr. Henry!

KSAH has been my vet for 20 years. They are always kind and professional, and they got the job done. Office staff is helpful and responsive. I love that they are doing all curbside service right now, because my dog wasn't well suited to sitting in the waiting room with other animals within pouncing distance. We had to use their emergency service once several years ago and found them to be extremely sympathetic and flexible and very kind of both to my human family and our suffering animal.

I went to Kirksville Animal Hospital and right as you walk in the door you can tell they were going to take good care of your pet. I took my puppy to the Kirksville Small Animal Hospital to have her spayed and get her vaccinations. I didn't have to wait long for an appointment. The staff took excellent care of her. The cost of the spay and vaccinations was about $400 less than another vet I had taken her to when she needed her very first vaccinations. I won't take her anywhere else now. Kirksville Small Animal Hospital rocks!

We came to the hospital for a second opinion as our usual vet wasn't as concerned about our cat's continual over-grooming, resulting in vomiting and hairballs. Dr. Lisa was kind, caring, did a great assessment, making her recommendation for an exploratory surgery.Together we came to a compromise, trying a medication to calm her tummy and another for anxiety. So far, very good, all symptoms have reversed or reduced, making surgery unnecessary. We will see Dr. Lisa now for all our veterinary needs. What a gift to the Kirksville region.This is now 3 years later than the above post. Dr. Lisa was at our side while she treated our dear Saffron. When the cat's hyperthyroidism couldn't be controlled, she died in the doctor's arms, peacefully. We now have Lena, a stray from the local shelter, who has needed lots of love and understanding to counter her abusive early home. She is now a delight, and we welcome taking her to Dr. Lisa for routine checks. All if well. You couldn't choose better than Dr. Lisa, she is compassion personified

We have been bringing our animals to KV Small Animal Hospital for years. Lately, with our “special needs” dog, it seems we have been there a lot. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. It is always a pleasure to talk with Dr. Doak, who listens to our concerns and takes time to share her considerable expertise. Our dogs say the treats are excellent. It doesn’t get any better than that!

Our service was very fast and you can tell everyone wants what is best for your animal! They disclose all prices and treatments before hand so you know what your animal needs and if you can afford it. My cat was sick and started feeling better almost immediately after leaving!

I had my cat spayed and when I picked her up this morning I got her out in the car before we left she was covered in her own DRIED urine all over the back half of her body. Obviously when I dropped her off she wasn't like that. I can't even bathe her now because of her insicion. To top it all off she's got bald spots on her from house stressed they allowed her to become. Very possibly from LAYING IN HER OWN URINE! I wouldn't even give this place one star I can't imagine what my baby went thru in there. Pet parents beware

Dr. Doak is compassionate, knowledgeable, and no-nonsense. I get clear, straightforward opinions and advice. If I'm on a tight budget, she's excellent at laying out a range of options for me to make an informed decision. The emergency after hours service has been wonderful when I had a mild vaccine reaction and just wanted to make sure everything was ok. A quick phone call put my mind at ease. The office staff are friendly and on the ball, and their rates are excellent. Highly recommend!
