The Mayhew Inn has fantastic personality. The rooms are each unique and thoughtfully kitted with everything you could need for a comfortable stay - mine had a record player with a excellent library of the essential 70s classics. It's a great place to cozy up with a book at night; Lake Superior is right there across the street waiting for you; and the common areas like the Outdoor Fireplace and the Dragon Lounge and the rooftop decks just add to the reasons you need to stay here. And then there's the excellent manager. He's available if you need something, a pleasure to chat with, and just a really excellent host. Thank you!

Our family of 5 (2 adults, 3 tween/teen kids) just returned from a wonderful long weekend at The Mayhew Inn. We all loved it! The decor was fun for all of us, and there was plenty of space to spread out. We stayed in the Storefront unit, and it was lovely. The record player and games were a huge hit - we were there in the winter that wasn't (2023-2024) and we had one quite rainy day that we spent mostly in the common lounge area playing games and listening to records. Everyone loved being right in town and having the freedom to walk to shops and cafes - even in early March, there was still enough spots open each day.We would love to come back in the summer to enjoy the rooftop patio!A few notes on the unit to help with expectations:-The bedrooms have a sliding barn door and one has a curtain so don't really block sound - if you have noise sensitive parties in your group, just something to be aware of (however you can just go to the common spaces which are very close - we did this for the early risers/night owls in our family)-Street lights do come in the living room/main bedroom so bring an eye mask if light bothers you.

The Mayhew is a gem—units are appointed with cool retro decorations, turntables, classic vinyl, and most have full kitchens. Even better than that, though, there are two lounges and an outdoor fireplace area for gathering, sometimes with new friends!Joel is wonderful to work with for coordinating check-in and check-out. In addition, we left something important there after our last visit, and he offered to send it back right away! The Mayhew’s location is perfect for parking the car and walking everywhere in town. It’s a little magical, too, to tell people there’s an inn between Joynes Ben Franklin and the Gunflint Tavern and have them say, “There is?”. It’s like having a fun secret hiding place. We highly recommend The Mayhew!

Wonderful boutique inn. The shared spaces are awesome. The Artist Loft was such a great place to spend Thanksgiving. The kitchen is even bigger than ours! LOVED all the vinyl and books. Caretaker of the inn had great pizza tips and was very nice. We built a fire and roasted marshmallows. There were even dog bowls in the unit 😍. Absolutely can't beat the location either. Can't wait to come back and try the other units!

My husband and I stayed at The Mayhew on a mini-moon trip to Grand Marais. We absolutely loved it! The entire complex is beautiful, clean, and cozy. You cant beat the location - it is right in the heart of downtown, within walking distance to everything, and right across from the lakeshore. The views from the rooftop patio are amazing, and the outdoor fireplace with a diy pizza oven is so cozy. We will definitely stay here again! I love that all the rooms are a different theme, and we want to try them all!

This is probably the best place to stay in Grand Marais! Especially if you want something more unique than a typical hotel room. Cozy room, comfortable and clean beds (very important to me), lots of little "extras" like a retro radio in the room. We stayed in the Plaid Cabin which is perfect for 2 people. Yes you can hear kids running upstairs if there's someone up there, but the website said this, so we knew to expect it and it's really not a big deal.

Best spot in town!! The hotel is a blast! It's swanky and oh so much fun! Wish I could give it 10 stars. We stayed in The Storefront. Room was cleaned very well. We enjoyed using the lobby as well as the outdoor fire place and the rooftop. Don't forget to go up to the roof top to hand out. The beds were extremely comfortable. The inn keepers were easily accessible even though they aren't on property; additionally, very easy to work with, super friendly, and accommodating. Had a blast spinning vinyls on the record-player and dancing the weekend away! Excellent choice of albums! Easy to walk to all locations in downtown Grand Marais.

A wonderful place to stay any time of year. We had an October 2020 microwedding on site with immediate family (ceremony was in Hovland, with dinner in the Thunderbird catered by Rebel Girls). We rented out the entire place for our family---- so I was able to see and spend time in each room. Most of the 1 bedroom units have the same floor plan with different styling, and the larger units with full kitchens have everything you need for a stay with nothing that you do not. While we used it as a traditional hotel/AirBNB, the owners are so kind and flexible that you can also rent to use as an event space for a full shindig. While it was too cold to use the rooftop patio and that furniture was put away for the season, the Lobby lounge and outside fireplace space were great places to relax for quality family time spinning records and drinking cocktails even with a light snowfall. We did a Halloween scavenger hunt in the courtyard for the kids and made woodfire pizzas the following day, and the space was loved by children and adults alike for a full weekend. We will gladly return again in warmer weather and take advantage of the best rooftop patio in Grand Marais!Note: we stayed in the Artist's Loft and while the raised clawfoot was a bit tight for those over 6 ft, we noted none of the complaints raised by the other reviewer.

My wife and I stayed for some R & R and loved it! The Artist's Loft was uniquely designed and was the perfect fit for us. The claw foot tub was a definite plus. It also featured a turntable and some great vintage vinyl we enjoyed. I streamed yoga and went hiking on the Gunflint Trail which was only a 1o minute drive away. We really enjoyed the Gunflint Tavern which was right out the front door and had lots of fresh options. Amy and Joel are great hosts and we plan on returning during the summer to enjoy the Mayhew again!I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS VENUE!

We loved our stay at the Mayhew! The rooms are beautiful, unique, and very comfortable. The rooms are also very quiet compared to an average hotel. The hosts are very accommodating and helpful. It’s great to stay in a place where the owners obviously care about the quality of their guests stay. It is also so nice to be able to travel with our dog and still have a great place we can stay. We will be back!

Amazing rooms/common spaces, amazing views and above all amazing owners revealing their vision with the boutique customer in mind. The accommodations are top notch and the atmosphere locks in new memories each trip. Get the fire crackling, stoke up the pizza oven and have your favorite beverage on the upper decks as you listen to the sounds of the harbor. Thank you for being our home away from home. The Moon’s

The location and view are great but that’s not why I’m giving this establishment 1 star…the largest room and most expensive was filthy, dust everywhere and the rugs were not vacuumed at all and for the larger price you pay you would at least expect it to be deep cleaned before guests arrive. Also the room advertises as 3 bedrooms so we had a group of 10 which you would think would have slept comfortably in that space but actually you get two small rooms and a couch that folds into a bed but it’s not actually a room so to us that was very misleading. The sheets that were on the beds smelled like a dog had been rolling around in them and musty so AGAIN for this large price and distance you travel you would expect again to have a nice fresh clean room. We are disappointed that our stay there was not more comfortable.

We were willing to stay here again, and told friends about it giving an honest review to them and on Google. Was the place perfect? No. Did we complain incessantly? No. After reading their response to my husband's truthful review, here is what I can say: their response was laced with absolute lies.Beware: The artists loft has a shared bathroom with a door that does not latch. It also has a stand in tub that ROCKS if you move too much (quite shocking and possibly dangerous).I can only hope they learn to be more honest, if they hope to be successful in a small town.I'm sure they will probably attack me here as well. Should be interesting to see how they decide to handle this.

The Mayhew is the perfect getaway on the North Shore. Overlooking the shores of Lake Superior it offers all the best qualities of a boutique hotel but also the freedom and independence afforded by an AirBNB. Whether you are looking to use the Mayhew as your hub for exploring all the state parks and beaches of the North Shore or if you are just looking for a cozy outpost to spend a cold winter night by a fireplace the Mayhew has you covered.

Such a charming and beautifully decorated hotel! Owners were extremely responsive and helpful. The location is great with a beautiful view of Lake Superior from certain rooms or when you walk right out the front! Hard to beat this place. We will definitely be coming back.

Thoroughly enjoyed our family stay at the Thunderbird. What an amazing unit! Our family has stayed at the Mayhew a few times and we always feel well taken care of. The benefit of multiple spaces on the property to utilize plus access to the downtown amenities while being minutes from skiing, hiking and biking is unparalleled. Thanks Mayhew team!!

The space is beautiful and the location can't be beat. Our room was below and above 2 of the communal spaces and it was loud. You could hear everyone on the stairs 24hrs a day. And we were unfortunate to have loud talkers at the lower fire place too. Not a lot of quite while we were there. Also our room didn't have a closet or any place to hang our close.

Super cool lodging with great rooftop lounge area overlooking the harbor. The rooms were very clean and comfortable. Can’t wait to get back there.Rooms: The room we stayed in was super comfy and had everything we needed.Nearby activities: You are right next to the harbor and Artist point. All of the cool gift shops and restaurants are right there to.Walkability: Right in the middle of Grand Marais so everything was within walking distance.
