Hats off to the biz owner!! I believe his name is John. Rented Kayaks in July of 2021. Lake Superior was too rough to go. John personally took my finance and I to a remote lake so we could still Kayak. The guy totally went out of his way to allow us to have a great experience. I know he lost money on our rental (I'm a CPA) but yet he took the time and effort to accommodate us. He was short staffed, too. I've been meaning to write a review for the past 2 and a half years. Every time I put my Stone Harbor hat on I was like, dang...I need to write that review!!!With much gratitude,Barry

It's high end, but they don't act that way. If you look like you're prepping a BWCAW trip, they're not jaded. They want to know where you're going and what can they offer to help you get there smoother.

We’ve been coming to Grand Marais for several years now and always stop to check this store out. This last year we were followed around by two different employees who obviously thought we were planning on shoplifting even tho we had two children with us. It made us so uncomfortable we left the store and don’t plan to return.

Came here for trail essentials, and it was a letdown. Limited stock with mostly less common brands. Calling ahead is a must; they might not have what you need. Customer service was subpar; the girls downstairs were just chatting instead of helping. 👎🛒

Had a pretty bizarre experience here a few weeks ago. They had two male employees working. Both of them just followed members of my family around and stood awkwardly close to them while saying absolutely nothing. It was pretty creepy. Between the lack of communication and having pretty basic t shirts for uniforms, it was hard to tell if they worked there or not. A simple greeting or conversation starter would have gone a long way.

Very good selection of outdoor gear and apparel. Knowledgeable staff and many tour options of fishing, kayaking, snowshoeing and many more. They also rent out some equipment.

This is a great local outdoor supply store with high-quality products. We happened to find the store on a recent trip to the North Shore and were thoroughly impressed. The staff was very friendly and answered every question that we had. It looked like people outside were loading up rental equipment for a Boundary Waters trip too. Awesome place. I'll probably be ordering online from them in the future and will definitely stop in when I'm back in Grand Marais!

Very helpful staff. We stopped on our way to the boundary waters for a yurt to yurt ski trip. They had the dog booties that we needed for your lab. (-30 degrees). We called ahead and they set them aside for us. Very neat shop.

I mailed my Superior Hiking Trail resupply package to the store and I mislabeled the P.O. Box number so it was delivered elsewhere. The staff was extremely helpful and the owner drove me to the post office and then to the store that received it. Amazing customer service and assistance!

Had a great fishing tour with our amazing guide Ben!! He was so knowledgeable about every aspect of fishing. I walked away feeling like I had learned a thing or two, plus we brought home fish for dinner! As someone who is not the most experienced fisher, I really appreciated the time Ben took in explaining not only what we were doing but why. Absolutely a great experience, can’t wait to go again!

Six and a half years ago, I stepped through the doors of Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply for the first time, and little did I know then that it was going to quickly turn into my favorite outdoor supply store. It's quaint, but has way more than enough product to keep you in the store, always looking for more. The workers are also very educated on the different happenings around the Grand Marais area, and can answer any question you have with ease. I make a point to always stop by here whenever I am up in the area. Opens at 10:00AM!

Rented some gear here and got some helpful advice from the staff too. Came back later and bought some good items from their wide selection of all-season camping/hiking supplies. Definitely recommend stopping here for your outdoor needs!

Can't say enough good things about the folks at Stone Harbor. Andy and Ben set us up with a shuttle to CR Magney state park for a winter backpacking trip. Then when the trails were impassable so we were stranded, they dropped everything to give us a ride back. THANK YOU!!!The store itself is beautiful, with an excellent, curated selection. They've got an especially good selection of dog gear, from camping equipment to skijoring, bikejoring, and dogsledding supplies.

We were visiting Grand Marais a couple weeks ago and needed to rent some xc skiis for a day outing.They were so helpful and friendly! They got us outfitted quickly and professionally and for a very reasonable price.It is a great, well stocked outdoor shop. So happy we found them and will definitely be back if we are ever back that way.

We were hoping for a nice sunny windless day to do Superior, we got the windless but just fog. So headed up to Two Island Lake for a beautiful paddle on a nice calm lake with great fall colors and sun!.Thanks to Ruth and her knowledge and history of the lake it made a great paddle, besides seeing a couple Eagles.Thanks for a great time!

We rented snowshoes for a day in the deep snow found off the Gunflint Trail. The rental process was quick and straightforward. The staff was super helpful and the price was good. The space is welcoming. Just walk in and take a look around. You’ll be glad you did.

SHWS is a treasure chest packed with essentials for your adventure. I even purchased first quality hiking boots in my size! Do yourself a favor and look here before you drive down to Duluth!But be patient. Staff is caring and provides excellent service; but limited staffing in this two story store helps with keeping affordable pricing.What a treat! My only regret is i didn't get to stop in after our SHT Section 6 bp and say thank you for the awesome boots.

The kayaking was AMAZING! We even saw not one, but two Bald Eagles, just about twenty yards next to us on the shore. And our guide, Ebba, was the BEST! She knew exactly where to take us, and took the time to really connect with us, and gave the whole experience a genuine, family feel. Definitely an unforgettable experience, and we can't wait to do it again!

We booked Stone Harbor for a one day ice fishing trip and had a blast! All we had to do was show up with our fishing licenses--the guides took care of everything! We snowshoed a few miles into the BWCA and fished lake trout on a beautiful secluded lake. Lunch was provided from Java Moose and the guides also brought hot tea! We had a ton of fun and even caught some good sized fish! It was definitely hard work and I would recommend bringing your warm gear and good boots. It was a long day and would be tough for those with physical difficulties or those less inclined for outdoorsy stuff, but the hard work is worth the amazing experience and the guides do all the real hard work hauling the sleds out there! Definitely recommend!

My brother and I did the Rock Climbing Tour through Stone Harbor. It was absolutely amazing! We went to Palisade Head, jumped off the top, and got to climbing 150 foot bluffs! It was gorgeous and invigorating. I have heard it is the best place to rock climbing in the Midwest. Our guide, Shane, was a great teacher and was all about safety. He told us every step of the way what he was doing and why he was doing it. He also went above and beyond on all safety precautions.To give you a reference, my brother and I are maybe intermediate climbers at best. We went to the gym at Vertical Endeavors in the Twin Cities a handful of times to prepare, but we had never done an outdoor climb. Shane knew the rock faces really well, and it felt like he was able to choose climbs that fit our experience and ability based on our Vertical Endeavor ratings. It was perfect so that we struggled up each climb, finished exhausted, and felt like we had accomplished an amazing feat by the end of it. It was an experience of a lifetime, and I am considering coming back next year. I might even check out ice climbing through them. (Brrrrr)

Great Friday kayaking trip, with Beth (guide) for my daughter. She enjoyed the experience of being out on the water so early this year.We also enjoyed our guided hike with Jen on Saturday, she took us out of our comfort zone and we appreciated the best of Minnesota. Jen took our time with us, answered many questions and was just an amazing guide.Being from the SHOW ME STATE-Missouri, we will come back here for more wilderness adventures. Thinking of their guided week of Isle Royale National Park.

I can't say enough good things about the quality of gear they rent, the staff, and ease of working with Stone Harbor.We rented a canoe for an east BWCA trip Aug/Sept 2018. Planning on single portaging, I had initially wanted a kevlar canoe. They stated they had such good experiences with the Nova Craft prospector series and at only an additional 6-7lbs vs kevlar (total 56lbs) they felt it was a better offering for their customers to keep costs and damage down. Post-trip I could not agree more with that decision. It was an outstanding, light, and easy to paddle canoe which we had no issue accomplishing our single-portage goals.If you're looking for an exceptional outfitters in Grand Marais area, this is where you want to go.I'm totally baffled by the complaints about costs on other reviews. Prices were completely reasonable for the product. If you're a curmudgeonly local and want to rent some heavy garbage I'm sure you could find a backwoods fleet store to fit your needs.

Highest quality gear with excellent expertise and advice. We purchased some Camp Chow and other camp supplies for our backpacking trip to Isle Royale National Park. They also provide hiking, fishing and kayaking guide services. A terrific LOCALLY OWNED shop to buy from so skip REI and shop at Stone Harbor!

We went to Grand Marais for a last minute trip with no plans for activities. We decided to try skijoring with ours dogs and Stone Harbor completely hooked us up with gear and suggestions for trails. Will definitely go again next time I'm in the area.

Drove 13 hours, round trip, to buy a kayak. Couldn't be happier, would make the drive again! Update: Called to change my order to a different paddle. No problem! They updated my order within minutes!
