I’ve been told that I had my best birding day ever here a few decades ago. So I returned every spring for the tundra swans or whatever. Either I was too late or spring arrived too early this year.

There is a viewing platform, but nothing else. To really see something you need binoculars or a high powered camera. If you drive on the road a little longer you can see more birds up close.

Great place to watch birds. Snowy owls and Shrikes are popular in the winter.

nice and quiet lets keep it that way. roads can be tricky in the winter. best to take appropriate precautions as it is a rather remote area. as with much of the thumb, do not expect cell phone coverage with just any carrier. great opportunities for observing wildlife. be sure to pack out anything you bring.

Great place for a nature walk and just dark enough to see the milky-way and shooting stars

An amazing place to see wildlife in action and take photos. I recommend that you spend some time to drive the roads and observe the fields and spillways, as each time you drive by them you will see something else to view and take pictures of that wasn’t there before. My wife and I love it here and really appreciate the time that was dedicated to preserve the wildlife habitat in this area!

A sky busters paradise. The guy in the zone next to you will always be blowing his $15 hand me down primos call, while taking passing shots at ducks working your spread at 100 yards.

I don't know what to say about this place. It's basically a parking lot and lookout spot for bird watching. You can fish here. Not much else. Found some cool plants and a hawk skeleton.

I think the best and fairest way to review this place would be to say your experience will most likely be hit or miss and come down to just dumb luck. There is a single large viewing platform where you can potentially get some wildlife sightings but from my experiences to date hasn’t really panned out well for me at least for taking photos. The frustrating part is that there is definitely plenty of different bird species and waterfowl here, but unfortunately aside from the one platform, your only other real option is driving slowly down the gavel road and crossing your fingers you see something. The problem lies in the vegetation being so thick, and with most of the clearings where the waterfowl take refuge in are deep within this vegetation and out of sight. Even though I haven’t done this myself yet, a kayak would definitely come in handy here. Considering the size of the refuge and it’s limitations in sight, It would be nice to see additional viewing platforms put up in multiple locations. My other complaint about this place is, for it being a wildlife refuge which I’ve always been under the impression was to offer a place to protect the wildlife, it sure seems the DNR is only really concerned in the interest of hunters. I came here during the fall migration when the chances for sightings are at there best but was chased down by a yelling off-duty DNR officer who was hunting and who was less then friendly and threatened me with possible arrest and citations for hiking on a trail I didn’t know was closed except to hunters. He stated this was clearly posted on signs however the route I took had no such signs unless it was hidden in the vegetation. I understand for safety purposes they close trails to non hunters and I even understand issuing tickets if they have to, but 2 things that bother me about this. The first was his over the top aggressive attitude like I was this big time criminal, and the other is the conflict in interest of a DNR officer hunting within his jurisdiction while policing it at the same time. I most likely will never go back.

This is a great place for bird watching. There's some nice ditches that will make for great fishing. We saw quite a few loons and a couple cranes there. There's lots of Duck habitat too.

It was very barren, and not much wilflife along the trail. I think all the tall grass must have been resently cut down.
