Nice campground on the north shore of Higgins Lake. The area is heavily wooded, so most sites are shaded with mature trees. There is a beach, including a pet friendly area, with picnic tables and a playground. The two campgrounds also have playgrounds. There are modern restrooms and showers that are clean and well maintained. A negative for some might be road noise as the campground is close to the highway. Also, there are no grassy sites due to the trees. For those with boats, there is a boat ramp with cleaning stations and plenty of parking. They even have an area where you can store your boat if you do not have room on your site. All in all, a very nice park that I plan to visit again.

North Higgins Lake State Park is stunning in autumn. The colorful forest and calm lake create a peaceful setting. The trails are well-maintained for leisurely walks, and there are nice spots for picnics. The facilities are basic but clean. It's a great place for nature lovers to relax in Michigan's fall beauty.

Every year we get a little more disappointed. People get louder and louder and quiet time isn't enforced. The food truck is gone. Lots of dogs on the beach this year. The campground itself is nice and the bathrooms and showers have been very clean. Camp host does a craft for the kids. The trail to the lake is not lighted tho, make sure you have a flashlight!! Some rule changes mean you can't drop your kayaks off and park your car at the docks anymore. We may just day trip from now on.Dog-friendliness: State parks are dog friendly, but people need to not take dogs that bark at absolutely everything that moves and you need to clean up after them!!

Words cannot describe how beautiful Higgins Lake is, which is why im adding photos with this review. The turquoise crystal clear blue water with white sandy bottoms is so calming for the soul. We love how peaceful the view on the lake from our kayaks was. The boaters were so respectful of kayakers and it was not over crowded on the lake or the beach. If i won the lotto i would live on this lake

I flew from San diego, California, to visit my best friend in her hometown of Roscommon, Michigan. From someone who grew up on the sunny, sandy beaches of San diego, I can promise you this.... It was by far the clearest and cleanest water I've ever seen. The trees were breathtaking around every bend. The water, all be it still cold from winter, was absolutely perfect. It was a literal breath of fresh air.Playground: Depending on parks of the lake where you dock, there are some with playgrounds right on the water.Restrooms: By the parks there are a couple restroomsDog-friendliness: I'm not sure about the rules or regulations, but I did get to see a few pups on the boats and walked along the lakeside.Picnic area: Needless to say, with parks and bathrooms, there are to be picnic benches around.

Have camped here many times and always enjoy it. There are 2 mini cabins for those slightly less adventurous. The cabins have electricity, heat (for winter) a fan ( for warm weather, a mini fridge & microwave. The modern bathrooms with showers are nearby. Higgins Lake is a beautiful, clean spring fed lake that is perfect for little ones as it stays shallow for a great distance out. Nice picnic area, good fishing and nearby hiking trails. Give it a try.

We are taking our new RV out on it shakedown cruise. We want to be relatively close to home in case we run into problems. Nicely shaded. Trees are a mix of pines and hardwoods. We are here midweek and early June, so we are not crowded. There is a nice beach area, and a dog beach for those who travel with their dogs, and boat launching area. Near by are rivers for canoeing/kayaking. There are also hiking trails in the park.

Definitely lived up to the rumors. This was quiet and tranquil. Great for a relaxing time. Not a party hot spot. Super quiet. Bathrooms were a little outdated but clean amd kept up. Breathtaking views of the lake and great kayaking/water access.Picnic area: Each camping site has a picnic table and 🔥fire pit. Full electric at the site. Water and dump site at front of park.

Very clear water which stays shallow for nearly 100 yards out. If you want a safe swim place for kids, this is it.The main beach is long and there are lots of shade trees. Only complaint is that it's a far walk from the car! If you are bringing lots of food and stuff down, definitely bring a cart to haul.

The park is absolutely gorgeous. We went in the summer when the sun is bright and the bugs are energized. There are plenty of trails that can be traveled via foot or bike, a DQ at the end of a trail... If you're a true adventurer, there's a small town about 2 hours via bike or 20~ish minutes by car with a nice BBQ restaurant and museum. We really enjoyed ourselves and stayed in the cabins. The only thing I missed was showering in a place where bugs are prohibited.Restrooms: Public restrooms with showers (infested with bugs). Curtains are included, and I highly recommend water shoes.

Always And forever amazing. The best Island Lake in Michigan The best for small kids. The Blue water and long shallow shore makes it very safe.

Rented a mini-cabin here in middle October 2022. It’s a pretty, classic Michigan State Park! The Mini Cabin has electric heat which works well, a mini fridge, and a microwave. My only complaint is that there is no outlet on the exterior of the cabin so you cannot trickle charge an EV, for example. Not really an issue this time of year since there are many open campsites nearby but something to keep in mind if you’re driving here with an EV and plan to stay at one of the cabins.

Sooooo beautiful. Clear water (one of the clearer lakes I’ve been in Míchigan) and wonderful areas to relax for a while. There were some kind of pest caterpillars on the trees which fall over everything (also your belongings) but the place is fantastic and it’s worthy. Nice toilets and barbecue areas. Small but clean Sandy (beach) to enjoy.

This is the spot! We come here every year to swim and or camp. As far as the beach goes, If you arrive between 8 and 11am you have your pic of spots on the beach because there is no one there. Make sure you have your resident or non-resident state park pass. There are plenty of picnic tables with BBQ grills to go around, a swing set, bike trail, a nice boat launch, and most importantly decent bathrooms on site near the beach. The beach itself is perfect and sandy and clear views to the bottom when you are in the water.Take note, the water in the swim area is very shallow. Even at the outer buoy's it only reaches my waist. I am 5'11. Anything closer to the beach and it's literally shin or thigh high. Great sense of security if you have kids though. There are signs warning about swimmers itch but my family has yet to encounter any problems. The beach gets crowded on the weekends. But weekdays are sublime. We camped here at spot 134 in June 2020. Nice corner spot and close to the showers. We tent camped and it was not great due to the 95° heat and humidity. Thankfully we spent most of our time at the beach. The camp sites are clean but if you are expecting privacy rent the spots that are next to you. It's not that expensive and totally worth it. You definitely feel crowded otherwise.

🌊🌊♥️♥️North Higgins is our favorite local lake so far! We drive 45 mins to and from; but we enjoy ourselves, every time! Our kids love to play in the beautiful, crystal clear, always cold, lake; than go dry off by swinging on the swings and playing on the play areas. They have a very nice recreational area and permanent grills 🍖 🔥 setup around the beach area and wooden tables to set and keep your things nice and together! They have awesome rubber beach mats to make the walk through the sand down to the water easier on shoeless feet. 👣 👣 North Higgins also does half covered areas for get togethers, events, bday parties 🎉!Additionally, they also offered canoe rentals. However, we haven’t yet had the budget for canoeing 🛶 yet, so I am not sure of the pricing options but it is listed on the trailer your rent them from.👍👍 Nice public bathrooms! Which are accessible when the park is opened for the season; and are closed when out of season. They also offer a sand rinse-off area; so you can lessen the sand, you track back into your vehicle! 🚘 🏖️Oh! And be sure to watch for those seagulls, they’ll steal your food; if they can get to it! 🦅 ( <—not an actual seagull, merely a dramatization, lol)🛑 Due note: 🛑This park does require you to have the park pass you can purchase from them at $17 for the length of your plate time or from your local dmv at a discounted price when you renew your plates/tags/etc but gets your access to all the state parks! 🌲 🌲 Which is, awesome in itself! If you are a Michigan resident, you are unable to purchase a day pass. Not quite sure why it’s regulated that way, as we found it a bit odd, but we signed up for the pass with us being residents. Non-residents have the ability to purchase a day pass for a discounted cost.Lastly, all in all, we love it and always enjoy our time there and leave refreshed, relaxed and sun kissed, not burnt! ☀️ See ya next North Higgins. Stay fresh to def!Find us and follow us on IG: MichiganExplorations

Words cannot accurately describe this beautiful place. Waters the color of the Caribbean, great camping, hiking and a gorgeous lake... you'll never want to leave. Just be sure to choose a site on South side of the lake, the North side is ok but only one restroom/shower up a hill and nowhere near the camp store.

Great camping site. Very well managed. The site is clean, including the BATHROOM AND SHOWERS. The campsites are well separated to ensure privacy. The beach is at a walking distance from the site. I’d recommend booking the site early to get the best possible location for convenience. The only drawback is the garbage disposal is a little far from the campsite.

Beautiful lake but the swimming area is not that big and too many fast boats flying by. The beach area isn't that great either.

Took my 1st solo motorcycle camping trip here. Beautiful campground and beach. Large boat launch and parking. Bathrooms and showers were very clean. Some of the bathroom fixtures could use some maintenance attention.I would highly recommend visiting this area and camping there. Just beautiful!Walking and biking trails were awesome!

Was very beautiful and the people was very nice. The park rangers was very friendly and helpful while down at the boat launch. The only bad thing was on Saturday evening the bathroom by the boat launch was so nasty you almost puked going in there it was so bad. But on Friday it was good. Will be back every year now.Restrooms: Friday the bathrooms was fine but Saturday afternoon to evening it was so nasty it wanted to make u puke 🤮 when you open the door.

Higgins Lake is so far the most beautiful inland lake I have seen in, at least in the lower peninsula of Michigan. There are a few that are hard to beat in the U.P.! There is a narrow bit of sand beach around the edge of the lake, and the bottom of the lake is sand as well (at least at the State Park). I love this and it really sets Higgins Lake apart since many inland lakes in the area are rock and mud shore/bottom with lots of plant growth. There are also plenty of trees perfect for putting up a hammock, and crystal clear water.

Nice park to take family to. Lots of homes and boats out. Clean. The water is very clean compared to most. Lots of trees for shade on hot days. Grills are already on Lake. It was very calm and pleasant.

Very nice park, well kept, amazing beach, not too cold in summer, you can walk like 100ft inside the lake and enjoy the crystal like water. Would come back again.

Beautiful State Park and very well maintained campground. Clean bath house, tidy garbage collection area, ample water stations. The check in process is quick and simple. We stayed over the long Labor day weekend and although the park was at capacity, it still felt cozy never overcrowded. Fun beach and a playground for the kids, camp host had daily activities. Nice trails to walk our dog both paved and rustic. Getting up at sunrise and walking around was the best, everyone was still sleeping so we had the beach and trails all to ourselves for a few hours. Already made reservations for this coming summer for a full week! (Site number 76 pictured)
