This shelter does a great job. Completely turned around from years ago. Folks complaining might want to volunteer to see just how hard it is. People need to educate themselves and not ask a busy shelter to do it. And the shelter is limited to taking animals in the area BY LAW. It is far to easy to folks to sit back and complain and not do anything to makes things better. The folks at this shelter got up and DID something. Can you?

No where to place stray dogs. They tell lies that they gonna get back with you. But i found a stray dog in their area and they told me that they had nowhere for the dog. So now time to contact BBB

Manager of the shelter was very rude and not helpful. Had a cat I wanted to try and help and get off the street and because it wasn’t found in rouge she wouldn’t accept it and because it wasn’t tame. Lady you have to have a better heart with these poor animals otherwise you need to be in a different occupation

Very rude. Very disrespectful. Will not return phone call, texts, or DM's. And it's blatant too. Woman named patty asked three questions over text and never contacted me back even after I left multiple messages and voicemails.

My experience here was pretty heartbreaking. I was excited to adopt a cat, showed and expressed great interest. I went to go apply for adoption, and marked that I was thinking about getting the cat declawed. I was completely unaware of the harms of declawing a cat. During my first visit to the shelter I explained that I will be preparing my house for the cat including buying all the necessary items. I reached out multiple times for an update on the cat, and they finally texted back that selecting yes to declaw will automatically reject your application. As a shelter it is your duty to educate applicants of the harms something such as declawing. During my visit, they never described the harms of declawing, rather they told me someone would follow up with me on my application and described the next steps. Just as the animals deserve a second chance at a loving home, humans also deserve second chances. I was so in love with this cat, prepared my home and was rejected abruptly. I have read that many shelters will require adopters to sign a contract stating they will not declaw. I would have done that in a heartbeat had I understood it was not humane. I felt lead on and let down, as I don’t know why they had not just told me this while I was still at the shelter or even attempted to educate me!

Called River Rouge PD for the animal control officer regarding two cats that keep coming in my yard. Being told they won't come get these cats are a issue with me because I own two dogs and if my dogs do attack these damn cats. I lose my dogs because y'all won't come get these cats. One cat got on my roof and the other one goes under my house. I can't let my dogs outside because of this situation. I called multiple cat rescues and other animal control agencies and been told that the River Rouge animal control has to get these cats

Patty is the sweetest, she helped me and my family through a tough time with our dog. They need more support, they are doing a great job in spite of their lack of resources and help

I was trying to find a place for animals I do not own and instead of being helpful they texted me this "It's a snowstorm and day before Christmas Eve so I don't think you're gonna find anybody just take your problem to make like convenient for you" it is not even Christmas eve and I would obviously drop off the animals.

Rude as all heck. I want a dog from the shelter rite now as I type this message. I'm trying to save a German shepherd. And for some no good reason that the staff won't even tell me. They won't even acknowledge me.

This place doesn't even deserve one star I wish I could put 0. I went in there with a badly injured kitten I found in front of my apartment. I had no where else to take it and this was the closest shelter to me because Lincoln Park doesn't have one that accepts kittens. The lady was very rude to me and refused me service because I was from Lincoln Park. I told her there was no shelter in Lincoln Park and that this is the closest to me and I begged them to take the kitten because it NEEDED help that I can't afford. The lady lied to me saying there's a shelter in Lincoln Park behind the KFC on Southfield road and told me to leave with the hurt kitten. Note, there isn't and I know that for a fact because I already checked it before I got there, it's not a shelter. The poor kitten ended up dying anyways and I had to bury it myself when all I wanted was to get it help from a shelter.

This place is trash. We drove 45 minutes to adopt a dog. We had to wait almost 2 HOURS for the manager to get there, only to tell us since she was I heat, they had to call the board and see if they could let us adopt. This was after my 3 year old spent about an hour and a half playing with the dog and bonding with her. They told us they would call us either way. 2 weeks later, we saw the same dog on their page BEING ADOPTED BY SOMEONE ELSE!!!!! They DID NOT let us know she was available and they broke my little girls heart. They are uncaring, unprofessional and straight up pathetic!!!! Don’t waste your time. Chances are, you will not get what you are going for, if you get anything at all.

A great shelter. Very friendly staff and volunteers that go above and beyond for all the animals in their care. A great place for animal adoptions. If your missing a pet check with them the surrounding areas bring animals here. I adopted my dog from them and he has been a wonderful addition to our family. ADOPT DONT SHOP

One of the very best animal shelters. They go above and beyond for ALL animals to ensure they are adopted by great, solid people with good values. It doesn't get much better than this!

This shelter has come a long way thanks to the absolutely wonderful woman who runs the show there! She does so much for the animals in the shelter she looks over and for the animals in the community. This shelter is full of the most dedicated workers and volunteers!

None of their animals are spayed or neutered. They wouldn't allow me to go in and look at the dogs. This year I lost 2of my dogs and I have 1 left. He is extremely depressed. So I thought to get another dog or maybe even 2, but no such luck. I wasn't allowed to even see any of the pets.

I would give this place 0 stars if I could. Unprofessional and liars. Please don't waste your time here you are better going to the Humane Society or any other rescue. Some dogs are malnourished while others still have dried blood on them from their wounds. Save yourself the trip.

I've interacted with shelter volunteer many times & could feel the heart of each dog, the love & compassion that poured out through every word. These volunteers and director see the worst of the worst and every once in a while get to see the joy of a perfect love match. The volunteers are lied to, cursed at, spat at, threatened, etc. They do their very best to remain calm, but that is not an easy task. Imagine the feeling of a person putting on a big scene in front of you. Crying, balling, sobbing... so tore up over a dog in the shelter's care. This person swearing on everything holy that the emaciated, dirty, smelly dog that was just "rescued" and dropped at the shelter, is their beloved dog...thats been "missing" for "so long". So... This family is re-united. A time for joy right? Nope! Turns out that family was lying. Their dog got away from them just a few hours ago. This poor animal is returned to its miserable existence caged in a horrifically nasty yard, with nothing any reasonable person could call healthy, safe or clean. Let's not forget the beating the dog took for running away...So, the next time you visit the shelter and are "apalled" by an animals condition. Please consider the big picture. You don't know the whole story. When the dog or cat arrived, any legal proceedings that may be pending, the willingness of the dog to be approached or touched. Many times it's not legal or ethical to share the history of an animal with you, no matter who a person claims to be. This shelter is voluntary. Led by one person with an enormous heart, followed by volunteers that get there as often as possible to do anything they can to assist. It's overwhelming. Many people cannot handle the pain, filth & sadness they observe daily. They must internalize so they have the strength to help the next animal in need.Animals adopted out are based on the animals health, needs and ability to thrive, not just survive, in their new home. If as many people volunteered even a couple times a month, rather than complain... This shelter would also begin to thrive. It'd become a go-to safe place in the neighborhood rather than the go-to dumping ground. If you have 30 minutes a week to spare. Go give a hand. You'll learn in minutes what life is truly like there. Put the daggers away and take a walk in their shoes. It won't take long and you'll begin to see the reality of life in a very small, volunteer driven animal shelter. My heart goes out to the director and staff of volunteers. Thank you for everything you all do. Bless your hearts for the pain and sadness you carry because you want so badly to save them all... but know the reality is you can't. That hurts.Sending River Rough love during the holidays and the whole year through.Peace. PawZ. L🐾ve.L. Fabbo

They are so nice and very helpful. I was so worried about taking a pet somewhere that wouldn't help but, they had all the necessities for pets, were extremely caring and do everything they can for the animals to help them find good homes.

Called for help for an orphan cat. Somebody from shelter called me back and gave me other ideas of what I should do. Won't be calling on this rescue ever again. Poor business practices. Sorry you can't be bothered.
