Last week sweet dog of nearly 15 years, Latte Grande, had reached the end of his journey. He has been taken care of by VCA every since we relocated here 12 years ago when I retired. All the Doctors at VCA have always listened to us and have taken care of Latte the whole time. Dr. Browning and the staff helped us make this decision and with great consul and empathy we said goodbye to our sweet prince and held him as he took his last breath and crossed the rainbow bridge. Thanks you Dr. Browning for being such a good friend to both us and Latte and helping us get through that difficult process. We wish everyone at VCA Portage all the best and thank them for their dedicated service to Latte through his various trials and tribulations throughout the years.Dave and Leslie

We had to put down our 15 year old dog Levi and amidst one of the saddest moments of our lives, the kindness and sincerity of the staff was a bright light during our stormy day. They were extremely kind and sympathetic from the phone call to make the appointment, to during the appointment, to two weeks after when they sent us a card signed by the staff. I cannot say enough good things about this staff and this animal hospital and I will recommend them to anyone and everyone. Their presence and sincerity was exactly what we needed during this terrible time and I will forever be grateful to them for the love they showed us. A big and sincere thank you goes to all of them, and my husband and I feel very blessed to have worked with them, even under the circumstances.

This place is amazing, I could not recommend a place to take your animals any more than here. I (unfortunately) ran into an emergency and they got me in so quickly and efficiently with such care that I was so impressed and plan on taking all of my animals here for the rest of the time that I live in Kalamazoo. Everyone was so friendly and truly seemed like they cared about my dogs well-being - which means everything to me considering my dogs are my fur children and mean the world to me. I appreciate it more than they know. So thank you!

My daughter brought her cat in a few weeks ago with symptoms. After $600 between the appointment fee and tests, they said nothing is wrong. This cat’s symptoms have only gotten worse and is now drooling out blood. My daughter called them back today and the response was to bring her back in and the fee is $99. When my daughter asks why she still needed to pay when they didn’t find anything the first time, the response was cold hearted “it is your responsibility to contact us if the symptoms got worse.” No VCA, it was your responsibility to do a more comprehensive check to begin with. Saying nothing is wrong and now the cat is worse and suffering is a miss on your part. You are the supposed experts and the critical thinking should have been, “the tests didn’t show us anything so let’s continue to look”. You missed a diagnosis and sometimes that happens but when it does, you own it, not shame my daughter like she did something wrong and try to charge her for it. She trusted you. I suggest having a more compassionate receptionist as these animals mean something to people. Perhaps even consider doing a better job of simple problem solving.

All conservatives be warned. The staff here is VERY Liberal. We took our dog in. The vet gave us his diagnosis completely ignoring half her symptoms. My husband reiterated her symptoms to the vet and he completely lost it. He jumped up out of his chair and started yelling and screaming, you could literally see his heart pounding out of his chest! My husband told him he needed to calm down and have a seat then he started yelling how he couldn't talk to him that way and got more upset!!!! Well, they asked my husband to leave and they called the cops. I finished the appointment by myself and the vet continued to disregard half her symptoms. The manager came in after that and asked me for clarification. I told her the truth. Your vet disregarded her symptoms and when my husband reiterated them to him he got really upset. I told her thought he was sensitive. What else could any rational mind think. She gave me medicine for the dog and terminated our service. I tried to pay for the appointment but she wouldn't let me.So I guess all I can say is that if you don't disagree with the vet or attempt to reiterate symptoms that you feel are being overlooked you'll be great with these guys. On the other hand, if you do, the police will be called but at least your appointment will be free!!!

The staff here were very nice and just doing their job but they push a insurance on you from the second you walk in the door. And because of them having this insurance (which only makes you spend more money it saves no money in the long run!) They charge insane prices. They quoted my kittens spay at 1,164$. That is insane the humane society does it for $100.

The best experience that I've had with a vet! Dr. Browning was patient and compassionate with my anxious pup. The staff was friendly and the visit went great. Would highly recommend!

Able to get in quickly, Friendly and professional, would recommend them, would like them to have offered a more holistic approach to my cat having diabetes a little on the expensive side.

Our sweet cat was ran over and we rushed him to this hospital. They immediately got us in, saw him right away, and called us to explain the details of what procedures were my options. Dr. Pete was the doctor seeing him and he explained everything in detail. He was so thorough and compassionate. After we felt the best option was to euthanize our beloved cat, the nurses and dr. Pete called us in to a quiet and dim lit room so that we could be with our fur baby as long as we wanted. He was heavily sedated so as not to be in pain. They gave us privacy and said to push a door bell like button when we were ready. They told us to take as long as we needed. Once we rang the bell Dr. Pete came in and performed the procedure. He was so gentle with our baby and as hard as it was we were relieved that he was no longer suffering. As difficult as it was to see him in that state, we knew we made the correct decision. Not once did I feel rushed or coerced. I felt like the staff treated us all so kindly and gently.Today I received a card with a note from the doctor and the staff expressing their condolences.Truly a professional and caring team.

We were having issues with our cat Nala puking immediately following eating, so we had her dropped off here. They did a fantastic job of making sure she was well cared for, wasn't scared, & checked about the prices before doing anything. Highly recommend VCA if you love your pet!

I had a really good experience with VCA Portage until COVID happened. When I was no longer able to bring my dog inside and be present is when the downfall started. I brought my dog in for routine shots and it took hours, yes hours, because they would not allow me inside with my dog. They had to sedate him and charge me way more than I would have for just routine shots. He came outside crying like I have never heard out of him before. After that experience my dog would no longer go back inside with anyone there. Something happened to him that he absolutely refused. When they would allow people back in I made an appointment for an allergy injection in the summertime and it was 96 degrees outside. I had to wait in my car for a good amount of time and when they used a forehead temp check my temp was above their requirement so I was not able to go in. My dog not willing to go in himself so they arranged for the Dr to come outside where my dog still would not let them touch him. After me tackling him with all my body weight he was able to get the shot. After that experience I took my dog to Paw Paw Veterinary Clinic where my dog will go in happily and they allow you to go in as well. I wish things would have turned out better at Portage because it wasn’t a problem before COVID. I do understand the precautions but when you can go into your drs office right next door you should be able to at the vet as well.

What can I say? I love, love, love this place. We had a terrible experience with another vet in town, switched to PAH and have never looked back. Dr. Chapman is seriously the BEST person & vet. She explains everything in ways you can understand, draws pictures to show you what's going on and includes your input and wishes in your pet's treatment plan. She's great with eye issues (I have a bug-eyed dog) and takes a common-sense approach when it comes to treatments. Dr. Helmholdt is the "heart guy" and you should definitely see him if your pet has a heart issue or if you need a second opinion. He is wonderful and really cares about the work he does. I've only spoken to Dr. Lunney over the phone once but she was kind and patient with my questions. The techs and staff are all great too. They know me and my dog by name. The building is basically brand new and they have ultrasound capabilities. They also have a beautiful, calm room where they do their euthanasia services (I hope you never need it but it's comforting when you do). This place is wonderful and I can't say enough nice things about Portage Animal Hospital. If you are in need of a vet that will care for your pet the way it deserves, definitely make an appointment. You will not be disappointed.

Have cared for our cats for years, and have always been happy with their care and service. We have 6 elderly cats, so we are in at least 1-2 times each month with at least one of them

We heard great things about this vet. Unfortunately they weren’t accurate. On multiple occasions they tried to have us give our dogs vaccinations that were not yet due. The final straw was when they tried to schedule a vaccination 2 weeks after our puppy had just had the exact same one. When it was brought to their attention they didn’t even offer an apology. Clearly it’s all about the money for Dr Lunney and her staff. Which is super sad because some of us really value our pets. Please avoid this place at all costs! You’ll thank me.

The staff and doctors are all very caring and knowledgeable. I have brought several pets here for wellness and illness visits. And, when my dog had to be put down, Dr. H and staff went out of their way to make her as comfortable as possible leading up to that point.

Dr. Lunney did a fantastic job with our cat. Numerous visits over a years time for our sick kitty, she was compassionate, caring, and UNDERSTANDING about costs. Always explained the break-down of costs & always gave us options. When it was time to do the humane thing to euthanize Bandit, the whole vet team was caring while still being considerate about cost. Highly recommend.

I recently had to make a very difficult, end of life decision for my pet.Dr. Lunney provided clear information regarding his condition, treatment options and likely outcomes. She is thorough and compassionate and made this difficult situation more manageable. The staff is great, too!I know euthanasia must be almost as hard for the Vet as for the pet owner.Dr. Lunney, Thank You for being there! You are appreciated more than words can express.

Love this place. My dog has had many health problems, so we've seen every vet at the hospital. She has been boarded there as well. I would recommend Portage Animal Hospital to anyone. All of the staff really care there, and they are very good with animals. ...My dog likes to release her bowels...and pee when they pick her up, but the staff still love my dog, and are really good with her.

I love Dr.Partaka. The way she takes time to explain test results makes me feel like she really cares. Our sweet-to-people dog is dog reactive and they have that noted and always take great care when they are dealing with him.

Vets are very professional and compassionate. They took good care of my cat. Dr. Partaka even took the time out to let me know about resources to help me better understand my cat. :) Sending lots of love to this animal hospital!

My poor kitten had a horrible experience at this vet. She had to suffer with symptoms for months before they finally treated her. And they did it to her twice. These were simple basic routine diagnosis that went untreated. My kitten didn't need to suffer they should have treated her right away. I shudder to think what would happen if my cat had something serious. I do not recommend this vet, they are not proactive.

The VCA made our experience as comfortable as possible. My cat experienced a heart murmur that caused clotting in his hind legs. We found him unable to use them, so we rushed him to the VCA. The staff was extremely empathetic to our situation and very timely in diagnosis. We inevitably had to put our sweet boy down and received a card of sympathy from here. I recommend that everyone take their fluffy friend to the VCA due to their respect for the patients and the patient’s family.

The best vets around, my dog whiskey became mortally ill and even after the specialist in grand rapids gave up the staff here never did and went above and beyond to help us! They are awesome and the only place I will take my pets. Thanks so much to all the staff over there!

Wonderful vets and staff. They seem to genuinely care for and like our furballs. They were very considerate and thoughful when we had to euthanize a loved one and have provided great care to our younger pets for several years.
