What an amazing place! Beautiful on the inside and outside! The owners are extremely nice and know a great deal of the history of the home. It was very nice going down to the dining room for breakfast, which was very well cooked and arranged very nicely. I will be recommended this place to friends and family for years to come and we look forward to staying in the other rooms in the future!

After a weekend stay, I can not recommend this charming B&B enough. As other reviewers have expressed, the physical properties of the estate are wonderful:• Great care to preserve the original character of the home, especially the woodwork. I had felt as if I were transported to another time and place.• Location: only a couple blocks from the downtown area. However, it was the service, especially Theresa that made this trip truly memorable. From the moment of check-in, Theresa greeted us warmly and shared stories that added layers of depth and history to the Garfield Inn experience. Each morning, after she'd served all guests the final course for breakfast, she'd play the piano and organ in the adjacent room! Words can not express how welcomed, warming, and comfortable Theresa and the Garfield Inn made us feel that weekend. A wonderful experience all around. Thank you Theresa!- Ed & Becca

I enjoyed our stay. Our house was knowledgeable in the building's history. It did need cobwebs removed. Bedding was fresh as clean. Breakfast was wonderful. They no longer run a the bar or restaurant. That was a minor inconvenience finding a place for dinner.

If you are fortunate enough to find yourself in Port Austin, Michigan, do not miss this gem. Our stay in this 1831, yes a 190 year old bed and breakfast, was absolutely wonderful. Even though the Inn was full the rooms were quiet, clean and peaceful. And the breakfast would challenge the finest hotel...

My husband and I recently had a wonderful three-night stay at the Garfield Inn. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating in making sure that our stay there was perfect. The breakfasts were varied and deliciously prepared and presented! We can't say enough about the Inn and hope to return soon.

This is a charming historical Bed and Breakfast with excellent service and accommodations and quality food. The owners are extremely friendly and attentive. Great location too, just a couple blocks from downtown Port Austin and the waterfront. The building is very well maintained considering its age, though you do have to wait a bit to get hot water. Would highly recommend to anyone interested in a classy B&B experience at a historical site.

While we were disappointed the restaurant and bar are no longer available (without mention on website or literature), the breakfast was wonderful and served by smiling faces. This may not be a place for the young or spirited, with the hosts making it known that this was a place for peace, rest, and tranquility. It’s a short and enjoyable walking distance to the town and water. Luckily, there are many other great places to choose to eat if you stay at this B&B

Really nice place to stay for a weekend. Perfect for the couples getaway. In a quiet town with shops and food within walking distance. Beds are comfy and the tenants running it are every nice. The breakfast made is SO good. She offers coffee or tea in the morning.

We spent 2 relaxing days at Garfield Inn. The place is quiet and beautiful, our room was spotless and comfortable; the bedding was divine and delicately scented! Teresa is warm and welcoming, and a great cook and musician 😉The only drawback for us had nothing to do with the Inn: in the town of Port Austin, none of the merchants followed the mask mandates for Covid. In the shops and restaurants, neither staff nor patrons wore masks, so we didn't shop, and only ordered carry out food. The fall colors were glorious so we enjoyed the lake and many parks in the area.

If visiting the Thumb. This is a must if you have a few extra bucks to spare. Pleasant atmosphere. Steeped in History. And Theresa is just great. Breakfast in the morning is wonderful. Do not miss this stay.

There are several good things to say about the Garfield Inn, like the elegant presentation of a fine breakfast, the lovely setting, the comfortable rooms. But we appreciated the owners' restraint in not overstuffing the mansion with period pieces which detract from the architectural features. It should be noted, by the way, that, since the owners have eliminated the bar and restaurant, all subsequent reviews have been five-star. Good decision!

Service was wonderful! The NY strip steak, however, was not... It was pan fried with no spices whatsoever - we had to add salt and pepper, not something we usually do. The mushrooms and green beans served with it were from a can. Not the classy, delicious food it used to be...

Wow! What a beautiful OLD historical place! We SO WANT you to succeed! In a single sentence, what you need to do to be successful is hire a very, very good chef, improve the menu, and ADVERTISE.We had dinner there with a party of 5 this past week, two of us ordered the prime rib, which was absolutely tasteless, and not tender. There were no seasonings at all and it was horrible. The redskin mashed potatoes were also flavorless. The best thing on the plate were the green beans and carrots, which were tasty but the green beans actually still had all the strings in them. Please hire a new chef. 2 of us ordered the whitefish which had a glaze that was like nothing I have ever tasted, and not in a good way. 1 of us ordered perch, which came with the same vegies and red skin mashed potatoes, and looked awful but tasted "okay". This is supposed to fine dining and it was not even as good as a local Denny's or coney island, in fact worse. The prices are that of a fine dining establishment, the food was less than mediocre. They just recently re-opened under new ownership, so give them a try next season maybe.

I had a lovely visit in Port Austin, MI. The highlight was staying at the historical Garfield Inn. The innkeepers Theresa and Steven were amazing. Excellent service, a taste of history, great company, and more. Small town with personality. Beach was close by. Only about 2.5hrs from metro Detroit.I highly recommend a visit to the Garfield Inn!

It's absolutely a beautiful place in a perfect location. It's a quick skip and a hop to the shore of Lake Huron. This bed and breakfast/restaurant has definitely earned being at the top of my list to go to again and again. You'll never be disappointed when it comes to their food and customer service.

Beautiful pre-Civil War era home named for Charles G. Learned who moved to the property in 1859. He was a prominent businessman who built additions onto the property. It is now a bed & breakfast named after President James Garfield a friend of the Learneds and frequent guest. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Awesome historic Inn in the quaint town of Port Austin. We had dinner the night before and breakfast the next morning, the food was as good as the the rooms with a great, accommodating wait staff. This was our first visit and we will be sure to visit again...

We had a great dinner, all four of us. The wait staff was very nice and attentive. We asked to talk to the owner and he told us all about the history of the Inn. My wife and I will be going there over night for our anniversary.

The food looked delicious and the dining room was beautiful, but the steak I had ordered had no flavor to it and tasted bland to the point I feel a Mcdonalds burger would outclass it,The waitress that served me smelt of nicotine which nearly ruined my appetite. In my opinion the chef needs to go back to cooking school or they should hire a better chef

The service was very good, Prime rib was okay, perch was really good, carrot cake was amazing. The tarter sauce needs to be home made, theirs was obviously store bought.

Great place to kayak too from Port Austin. It take about 3 hours. It took us longer returning because the wind picked up.

Nice atmosphere and decor. We went there for lunch, so I don't know about the rooms. I want to go back for dinner and try the shepherd's pie.
