Sonny D's is a nice new place to have a drink and bite to eat. They offered a large bar selection to choose from, and you could have anywhere from a classic burger and fries to Chargrilled Oysters or Sausage Franconello. The atmosphere was cozy, especially with the fireplace. There were a lot of dishes I couldn't wait to try. We started with the Bavarian Pretzels, which didn't disappoint. Then I had spaghetti and Nona's famous homemade meatballs. My husband had the Rigatoni Portobello. Both dishes were wonderful. Our server was very nice, just a little slow. We will definitely go back!

Convenient restaurant on the main road to the lakefront. Had the Ruben sandwich special (plentiful cuts of meat, good rye bread) and side salad. No blue cheese dressing, ranch was only adequate. Wife had the fish and chips special. Haddock was over done, breading was less than adequate. Homemade tartar sauce had way too much dill. Cheesecake and carrot cake was best part of the meal! Service was solid but kitchen was slow despite only a handful of people in the restaurant.

There was a group of 4 of us. It took 20 minutes to be acknowledged only for the server to fill our water and say she’d “be right back” then not come back for 15 minutes. We put in an order for drinks, watched the bar make them then sit there for another 10 minutes before they were brought to us. We watched as our server went to other tables and never acknowledge us. We were there for 2 hours and spent most of the time waiting to even order then waiting to get what we ordered. No one seemed to care that we were not taken care of. The food tasted great but the service was the worst we have had in a long time. If the server had been even the least bit apologetic I would not be writing this review.

Must’ve been the winter crew because the food was sub par at best. Non Roasted beet salad lettuce was limp and wilted. If I saw this lettuce in my own fridge, I would’ve thrown it out. Even the carrot cake could not pull this terrible meal out of the nose dive. Biggest shock was the bill was within $7 of our previous visit to an actual Italian restaurant. Will never go back.

Sonny D’s is highly recommended! Great food and comfortable friendly service. Tonight Tiffany gave us some good advice on selections. Don’t miss Ida’s Potato Loaded Cakes and Fried Pickle Chips! Shrimp tacos are a hit - ask for some of the homemade salsa on the side. Rigatoni Portobello is perfect if you are aiming for their Italian specialties. We’ll be back again.

We went because the menu online mention gluten free options available. When we asked our waitress, she said none of the appetizers were gluten free and they might have gluten free noodles but she would have to check. We went with the caprese salad since we felt bad just leaving and were very disappointed. $14 for a quarter of a very pale, ice cold tomato and a few thin slices of cheese. I was insulted that they called this a salad and listed it next to chopped salad and other entree sized salads. A cocktail, a beer, and this piece of tomato came out to over $40 with tip. Yikes!Parking: Parking across the street.

Arrived on Tuesday, Dec 26th after 5pm. Very appealing and inviting facility. We were seated promptly and ordered two vodka tonics with Grey Goose Vodka. Hubby ordered the burrito special, and I asked about the taco special - the waitress showed me on the menu, which showed the tacos (steak) would come with three tacos, beans, rice, homemade guacamole, lettuce and salsa. I ordered another VT and then my tacos came. . . without the lettuce, salsa and guacamole. They were dry with white onion and cilantro. I asked about the other items and was told no it was as served. I then asked for a menu - I wanted to see if I misread the menu. I did not. I again asked the waitress and showed her the menu, "Grilled Steak Tacos 20 -Topped with homemade guacamole, lettuce, and salsa on the side" she said that didn't apply to the special. The special didn't say it excludes the lettuce, salsa or guacamole. She sent the manager over who was very nice and said sorry the special doesn't include those items. She offered to remake, and I declined. We received our check, and the waitress removed the meal(I didn't ask or expect anything). Our total bill was just over 60.00- three vodka tonics with Grey Goose less than 6 ounces each were 42.00!We paid the bill and left feeling snookered by the experience. Will we return or recommend this place to others? Absolutely not. Before getting a special make sure you clarify exactly what you're getting. Better yet, skip Sonny D's and go directly to the Stray Dog up the Street. If you really want great tacos, Ricochet Taco in Valpo has the best tacos hands down!

Waited for about 25 minutes at the bar. I’m the meantime another group of 3 and a women alone sat down, the women got her drink before we were even acknowledged. Finally the bar tender came over to take our order, then proceeded to go to the group of 3 take their order and make their drinks. We waited anouher 15 before ours came. Out pizza came out at the same time as our first round of drinks, that we ordered at the same time. The whole bar top was empty drinks, and wasn’t even full. This was a Tuesday night. Not sure if she needs someone to step in and help, but something needs to be done. As a service worker myself, this is absolutely unacceptable.

First season in a prominent location among New Buffalo’s vacation classics but from kitchen, setting and staff it’s go big or go home. Easy to sit and suggest improvements but not of staff or kitchen talent though local favorites of beer and wine should appear on bar list. Sip and sit after all its vacation.Wheelchair accessibility: Wide aisle

I say we had a limited menu to choose from since we came as a large group in town for a retreat. Main course choices were salmon or chicken or pasta. A choice of 2 different salads, house or Caesar. A couple of appetizers were included. Only had Pepsi products 😝.I skipped the salad which others were not impressed with at all. The appetizers were tried but even closed to being finished by the group. Those of us who got the salmon were not happy. Overcooked and salty. I could not substitute for the potato and spinach so I just got the salmon. When we talked about the meal the next morning, the locals have not been impressed either. At least they took a reservation for 25 on a Friday night.

We were seated quickly when we arrived, which was outstanding. That was the only thing that happened promptly during our visit. The staff placed us in the cauldron also known as the front (southwest facing) windowed patio. We were directly in the sunlight, but strategically switched tables to be behind a massive post that gave us some shade. We placed drink orders (two kids lemonades and two beers) immediately and (luckily) food orders for the kids. The drinks took ages to arrive. Lemonade came in two massive glass cups (we're used to branded plastic cups or the reusable ones provided by the restaurant). The beer came many minutes later to the point where I practically had to chug mine to finish before we left.We never ordered entrees for the adults because we weren't sure *when* those would come since it took at least 30 minutes to get the (bland) kids pizza, chicken fingers, and appetizers on the table. The waitress who took our order was a magician -- she disappeared without a trace. Drinks, two appetizers, and two kids meals set us back more than $70. For those prices (and $30 homemade ravioli), Sonny D's could afford to install some shade curtains on that patio to ensure a comfortable summer dining experience.Unless something drastically changes, we won't consider dining here again,
