DO NOT GO HERE!!!I repeat again, DO NOT GO HERE!One: They do not know how old the dog is that they let us purchase. The birthday that we got was INCORRECT!! So we do not know her true age.Two: The shot records were dated INCORRECTLY. We didn’t even get the right set of shots… Saying she got her first round of shots when she was only 2 weeks!!(They shouldn’t get them until 6-8 weeks old). Our puppy was not up to date like they were supposed to be (which they did fix free of charge for us)Three: A man was talking on phone with someone who just purchased a cat 🐈 who is now sick. The man talking to the adopter said to the other worker and I quote what he said “I was just going to lie to them”… when I confronted them about it they said “oh he was just joking, that was Randy”… okay. I’m sure it was 😤

For one of the most important decisions I’ve ever made the adoption process could not have gone any smoother. I went in and within minutes I found my cat or should I say she found me. The woman who assisted me throughout the process was very knowledgeable and made sure everything was throughly explained so I knew exactly what I was getting myself into.Just a little paperwork and some signing and she was mine. I was so pleased with how quickly things went and how soon I was able to bring her home. We met on Saturday 7/9/22 and by Monday 7/11/22 she was home. She is the absolute sweetest and adjusted to the move immediately.Highly recommend adopting here! It was truly a pleasant experience.

One of the worst experiences of my life ….. my family has donated ton’s of stuff over the year’s to this shelter and it wasn’t even recognized at all ! Ken was extremely rude ! It’s almost like he didn’t even want to be there ! They jerked me around from before Christmas when I applied ! All of the kittens were gone ! No call no email nothing ! Tyler was very helpful though ! The owner of this shelter should be ashamed !

This place is a disorganized mess. We found a dog we were very interested in online, filled out an application and could not get any call back. We went there, did a meet and greet with the dog and it went very well. We went back the following Monday to bring our dog and no one was there. Called three more times that week, no one picked up or returned our call. Went in on Saturday and they didn't know who we were or why we were there. Sorted through a stack of applications but told us to come back Monday when "Kevin would be there". We we said we did that earlier in the week and no one was there, we were told "Well I guess you better call then" when they finally found our application buried in the pile it was denied as "not a good fit" by their board. Not a single email or call from these people. Save your time and energy and go to a REAL rescue.

I just had to put down my 16 1/2 year old dog, adopted from Animal Welfare Society. They care and take care of the pets and I even looked 7 years ago but didn't find a match. I have my eye on one of their dogs now and I have only respect for the way they keep on protecting the animals. Keep it up!

I had my dog Otis for 10 wonderful years. Thank you to aws for letting me adopt him back in 2013. Although Cancer took him away from me early I could not be more thankful to your rescue for taking Otis in as an owner surrender. I still can’t believe I was initially interested in a puppy at aws but then fell in love and inquired about Otis the day he was posted. Right time and right place. He was truly my heart dog

Pretty small place but the animals seem well cared for. I do wish it was possible to open the cages and interact directly without having an adoption appointment but I understand the need for safety. Seems like a good place to adopt from and it has good hours for visiting.

Great experience here! The staff came in early on Saturday to accommodate our schedules for a meet and greet with our new pup Rolo a few weeks back. We got to spend time introducing our current dog with our now new pup in a private room, they provided toys and gave them time to get to know each other and play a little before we left. We drove from Birch Run to get him and the staff/volunteers were very friendly and seemed to really care about all the animals at the shelter. The shelter appeared clean and well taken care of even with so many fur babies in their care. I would highly recommend adopting from here!

I don’t understand all the bad reviews as our experience was very amazing. Wish I could give more stars. I understand that some people may find the application process long, but the staff are only trying to do what is best for the animal and everyone involved.I found the staff to be exceptionally professional, kind and to have wonderful personalities. My fiancé and I just brought Coco home today and she has been running through the house doing all sorts of hilarious things. She fits right in with our other 2 dogs and we will be giving all of them the best life possible. Thank you so much AWS and we will definitely keep you updated from time to time and send some photos too.

Everyone was so nice and helpful. It was very clean and animals well care for. I found the dog of my dreams there. I am over the moon happy with her!!! Feeling so Blessed that I got to take my fur baby home!!THANK YOU!! :)

We adopted 1.5 years old cat. She is healthy and friendly to us at new home. During first week adjustment, she hasn't made any trouble or concern. She is doing well.I hope she will live with us happily during her life span.All staffs in AWS were very kind and supportive for us to adopt the adorable cat. Thanks to all!

We adopted our dog from here! She's a five month old pup. The staff was so nice and helpful, they let us meet with her several times before we brought her home! She is the sweetest! They have a back area where you can play with the pups, they even took her into the cat room to see how she is with cats (we have a cat at home). I'd been looking at breeders but I'm so glad we went this route!

Imagine driving 40 minutes to meet a cat that looks and acts just like one you lost to old age six months before. How excited you’d be while you waited to hear when you could pick her up. Now, picture your confusion, frustration and heartbreak when days pass and you hear nothing and your calls aren’t returned.Yes, my review is negative because my application was denied. But there’s no excuse for not responding to an application. That’s human cruelty. The two stars are because the facility was okay.My loving cat Eli says this place can go suck kitty litter.

This shelter truly loves and cares for the animals that come through, and are committed to providing the best homes possible. I have recently adopted a kitten from here, and am so glad! He has made the best addition to our family. His care was carefully explained and a card for VCA was provided for a free initial exam! Some questions had come up afterwards, and the staff were still helpful when I called! They were flexible with my schedule when making an appointment to pick up the cat. He came from a very clean environment and was obviously well fed and cared for!While I have no complaints, after looking at other comments for this establishment I hope that people understand that 1. it is Michigan state law to have your pets neutered and spayed, so if you do not it is understandable to have your application denied, 2. you cannot base your pet decision on 'bedside manner' - I would rather have a heart surgeon that is rude than an immensely nice doctor with less success. Everyone has their days and if you are really looking to rescue a pet you should be patient and put their needs first.

They simply denied the application!!! stating that we are first timer and don't have experience :-( .they don't understand that its not about the experience but its about the love and every one will be first timers when they start.extremely disappointed with the response .

I did not like how they choose a person to adopt an animal. It's unfair to those who really love and care about them. I think everyone should be able to get a dog or cat if they are interested and have a place for them. Not if they have one vet or maybe didn't take the animal to the vet all the time. But they took care of their animals for a long time. They took the animal when it needed to be seen. I gave all my dogs their shots. I was told Dogs were coming from Texas. I went and loved a little girl small dog. I went there for weeks and had filled out their so called form. Was told I'd be on top of the list. to be okd Such a joke.. Another woman picked someone else. My dog died I really wanted that dog but I left heart broken. Don't go there if you really want an animal to love. They are very wrong the way they do there. They decide with their rules and not who really wants and needs the animal. Why have a place like that to do good people that way. I will never go to places like that ever again. Probably some people get an animal that they know or pay them off or set it up before anyone else. Something is wrong about that place. Don't go there you will be so dissapointed.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would luckily for them it's not an option. I had the absolute WORST experience in trying to acquire a kitten through Animal Welfare society in Madison heights. I found a kitten i was interested in that was in quarantine with many other kittens. They have a room in the back where you're not supposed to go in, a door that leads to the kittens was left wide open. I didn't step into the room, instead i asked an employee about the kitten, i pointed to him and she picked him up out of the cage and brought him to me. As soon as i saw him i fell in love with the little guy. I go up to the front and i speak to an employee named Ken who is an absolute airhead and is a liar. I did my adoption form and he told me i am the first to have a form signed due to the kittens being in the back. To make this long long story short, they gave the kitten to the SAME employee THAT SHOWED ME THE KITTEN. they gave it to her over me due to her having "seniority" for being an employee after Ken told me specifically 3 times the kitten will be mine. leading me on for 3 WEEKS. Also the employee named Danny had the nastiest Attitude towards me and i hope someone with higher power there sees this and terminates ALL 3 of these employees for the horrible experience i went through. Save yourself the headache and go to Premier Pet Supply on maple & Coolidge in Troy, i got my kitten in 10 minutes. The ENTIRE process took 10 minutes. their kittens are spayed, vaccinated AND microchipped for 125$. On top of it ALL they also gave 4 different cat foods 1 bag of treat and a bag of litter for FREE PLUS 20% off everything in the store for adopting a kitten!!!! Their customer service was amazing! DO NOT GO TO ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY IN MADISON HEIGHTS!!! GARBAGE!!!!!!!!

Every time I come in here, the girl with the glasses and brown hair and tattoos is very unbelievably rude. I will not be returning for this reason. I wonder how she treats the animals. I feel like they are not safe with her. She made me feel very unwelcome. I have family that participates in bark-about and I have been around dogs my whole life. She made me feel small. I would not recommend this place.

This was one of the nicest and cleanest, animal adoption centers, I have ever been in. Their adoption fees are very reasonable.My husband and I went to look at a couple of kittens we were interested in adopting. We have applied to adopt the kittens and are anxiously awaiting their approval. Fingers crossed that we are able to get them.

As I’m going through all the reviews of this place, I realized most of the bad reviews are from people that didn’t get accepted to adopt a pet. That is no reason to give someone a poor review. I’m happy they are incredibly picky about who they adopt out to. Hopefully it will help ensure the best possible future for all the animals adopted out of this rescue . With that said my husband and I had a great experience here. I was contacted the following day after putting in an application. They even made arrangements later in the evening so my husband could come with me and our other dog. Incredibly nice people that were patient with us and gave us time to make sure she was a right fit for us. I will make sure to send people here that are looking to adopt from a local rescue. Keep up the great work. #adoptdontshop

We adopted a sweet kitty from here a few weeks ago and had a grear experience. I initially applied for a certain cat online but they called to inform me that car would not be a good fit (i have young children) so my son and I went in and picked one out that was perfecf for our family. The entire experience was great. My son really enjoyed spending time in the cat room and we are love our new furry friend.

We applied for a kitten, I called this afternoon to follow up. I was transferred to someone named April or Abby? She had told me the kitten we applied for was actually given a home today - totally cool and not a problem. They proceeded to drill me with questions about my application.They were very interested in why my dog was not fixed. My dog is a senior and came into our care long after she was a safe age to be fixed. I almost felt that I was being reprimanded...They also asked if I was moving. These people googled my home address and said that my house was for sale. Which is entirely a lie.Apparently you need to be approved by their board of directors to adopt an animal as well and that April/Abby and her coworker are not able to approve applicants - which is fine?This whole experience felt very invasive.

Not sure why this place gets bad reviews, guess it's just people who are upset that they weren't approved. But I had an awesome experience here! Went in on Wednesday to look at some cats, spent over an hour there in the cat room. I wanted to look at two that were in their cages but was told I had to fill out an adoption application first. I filled it out, they told me they needed to do a vet check and would let me know no later than 48 hours if I was approved or not. Went back the next day to see the cats again, everyone was super nice and helpful. Came in again on Friday and was informed that I was approved! Took out the cats from the cages I was interested in and fell in love with Darcy. Came back the next day with my mom and picked her up! Tamara and the whole staff are so professional I am just so impressed with this place and I love my little Darcy. Thanks again! (:
