Elk County is an amazing adoption resource. Superior in all ways to others in the Eastern northern Michigan area. Adoptions are affordable, they don't push multi-cat adoptions, and our boy was even microchipped! We're so happy with our sweet, adopted fella. Thank you, Elk County!

It also makes me sick to even give this shelter a one star. Amy (Mommies daughter)/Pauline who "owns" the shelter is extremely rude and violent. I waited 1 1/2 hrs with 2 kittens and mama for my appointment and was never seen. Two people came in from Gaylord and Alpena to pick up their cats after being fixed and the cats were not ready to go home as promised at the time for pickup. The owners were very upset about this and said that it was the second and last time this would happen. I brought a stray cat in that I trapped with their trap and they were fully aware that I would bring it to them. Amy threw her palms on top of the carrier and then threw the carrier on the floor and yelled at me in front of other customers. Do not go to this shelter. We go to Mancelona now and don't mind the drive. St. Francis please help these poor animals P.S. the pregnant mama was in the carrier when Amy threw it on the floor

My daughter's cat died from kidney issues so we decided to adopt one. After a phone call to this shelter we drove to see theirs and spent an hour watching my 8 year old daughter fall in love with one of their many kittens they wouldn't let us adopt one because we have a 7 year old male dog thats not fixed. Had they explained that rule before we drove to see the animals they'd have saved my already hurting daughter another heart ache. THEY LITERALLY WANT TO CONTROL THE ANIMALS WE ALREADY HAVE. Btw we live miles from anyone and we take excellent care of our animals. Our male is a working farm dog and protects our livestock and I like him intact.

As many animals that need to be rescued and go to a good home I found that it seems like they don't want to find a home 4 the animals went there three times for us to be told we had to fill out an application had to come back another day come back at 4:00 it was crazy I drove over a hundred miles in one day back and forth just to find a rescue which I thought was crazy I think all of the shelters need to think over a better way of trying to find a good home for their pets I ended up buying a dog because I couldn't rescue one which is sad

The staff is friendly beyond compare and they're all clearly committed to the welfare of animals. They maintain a very clean facility and take special measures to ensure sanitary conditions for visitors. They do offer veterinary services to the public, but you can expect to wait several weeks for an appointment. They're also one of the only businesses in the area to board pets while their owners are away. During my experience, I wasn't able to identify any significant shortcomings with the operation.

The people who work here are truly special. They all take such great care of all the fur babies that haven't found their forever homes yet. They also will work with you if you can't necessarily afford a big vet bill. Truly wonderful!!

They offer cost effective spay and neuter I do know. Which I firmly believe is needed everywhere but these guys started the trend in this area. I have taken two cats here and was very happy at how great they are.

Absolutely horrible and heart breaking! We lost our fur kitty yesterday due to heart/kidney failure. We are heart broken and went to adopt. Found a baby we all fell in love with and then they had us fill out paper work but because our male dog isn't fixed they told us no. So now here we are heartbroken again. 💔 definitely wouldn't go back,specially because as soon as I saw the kitten I wanted I bawled my eyes out because my family is missing a piece of our heart. We even have great vet references and everything.

I had my black lab spade there chipped, shots and flea and tick medication. All for 230.00 dollars. Plus they did a great with my Evie she had no problems after surgery.

The staff was so nice and helpful. All areas of the shelter were very clean. The big cat room was fun to be in! The cats were so happy to have visitors, all of them were snuggle kitties!

Do not be fooled by the “barn cat” option on their application. By policy they will not place outdoor cats, but it took several weeks and multiple follow-ups for them to inform me of this.When I visited the shelter, it was clean and animals were well cared for.

If you ever want a hound dog they always have a few hounds ready for adoption. Also this particular shelter does an awesome community yard sale twice a year that amazingly keeps there doors open and extra expenses paid. Just think it's shows how amazing there staff and the community of Atlanta is keeping there strays do well cared for.

Just got a New Addition to The "Roach Family"!!! A 5 yr old Shepherd Husky mix!! She was chipped...yet the company that registers the micro chip had "No Record on Computer"!!! Her tag needed to be verified with her chip!! PAULINE...An Animal Specialist at Elk Country was introduced to Mocha...and her chip read and matched her tag!! Company was contacted and her file was updated!!! THANK YOU PAULINE!!! YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE AMBASSADOR TO ELK COUNTRY'S SHELTER!!!
