My husband and I stopped for breakfast while visiting the Berkshires. Both the food and service were exceptional. The breakfast burrito and lemon caper breakfast sandwich were delicious, as were the raspberry and chocolate pastries. I found the cozy vibe very inviting and the service friendly and efficient despite the busy morning rush. Chef Maggie not only cooked the egg on my sandwich perfectly, but also gave me information on sites to see in the area which made my time there even more special. I highly recommend The Southfield Store for its tasty breakfast sandwiches and great hospitality.

A little gem in the countryside. As you enter you already feel a good vibe; one that pushes you try and taste everything is on the counter. From the pastry (scones, muffins, croissants and more) to the great selection of sandwiches made to order with quality ingredients. The coffee machine screams Italian espresso from afar and the staff can prepare you a Milanese capuccino as you were in the Lombardy capital. Finally, they also have home made ice cream....well now I need to go back. If you are in the area, stop by and lose yourself in the store for breakfast, lunch or "merenda".

Love the staff and scrumptious food. It can be very busy during winter months and lacks enough seating but good for them that it is very popular for good reason!Vegetarian options: Ask for what you want in the meal. Can be tailored.

Lovely spot in a small, serene town to grab breakfast, brunch, lunch, or a quick bite and cup of coffee. The outdoor seating area is nice and there aren’t very many cars that pass by. I got a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread and it was just what I expected. I don’t usually get sprouts on sandwiches but they made a very tasty addition. The outdoor area is dog friendly, as many of the customers had their companions with them (on leashes of course). I only heard good things about the food from the rest of my party. My only complaint is that they didn’t seem to bring out table settings for those sitting outside.Vegetarian options: Plenty of food options for vegetarians

I rented an Airbnb with high hopes of hiking, biking, and running through the Berkshires. Plans changed as frigid temps moved in and I spent two days at The Southfield Store reading my book, saying hello to locals, and eating the most delicious food. The bakery makes everything on premises and has a great menu to choose from - croissants to scones, giant cookies to tarts, soups to quiches, and more. Everything is fantastic! While there, many people were coming in to pickup their food orders and pies for Thanksgiving. Clearly this is the place to be. Definitely worth a stop over if you’re in the area. You might go for coffee and just stay through lunch. I did.

I passed the Southfield Store on a few occasions and had heard good things, so I finally stopped in. What a disappointment! There were two registers, so it was unclear where to order. No one behind the counter looked up or greeted us. No one was smiling. After getting on a line of sorts, I ordered a few pastries. The young man who took our order seemed to hate his job. Oddly, he immediately forgot what we ordered and somehow rang us up for a Wall Street Journal and a New York Times. I thought he was talking to someone else or joking, but he wasn't. It was odd. Once we paid for the right items, he again forgot what was ordered as he picked the items out of the case.As for the pasties themselves, they were pretty bad. The almond croissants had no business being called croissants. Instead of being light and flakey, they were bricks. The only positive was my son's coffee cake.Needless to say, I won't be going back.

The Southfield Store made my wedding cake and it was DELISH! It was a simple cake with a ton of flavor and great frosting that tasted like white chocolate. The cake was topped with a mountain of chocolate covered strawberries. 10/10!!

I first discovered Southfield many many years ago. It was a much-anticipated stop on my annual Berkshires vacation, and I appreciated both the good food and the atmosphere. Covid concerns kept me away for the past few summers, but I returned this year, only to be extremely disappointed. They were seriously understaffed and the promised 20 minute wait for the food we ordered stretched into more than twice that. Then, they had forgotten the promised cheese on my cousin’s tuna melt and both that tuna and my chicken salad verged on tasteless. What a let down.

This is normally a 5 star review and I typically drive 30 minutes out of my way to stop here from Monterey to Great Barrington. It was very sad to see what it was like today. If the owner wants to contact me I am happy to stop back if these issues change and update this review to the 5 stars it always has been and should be.First, staff was great, fast, and pleasant even though there were a fair number of customers for a Friday morning at 10:30-11 AM. I asked why the pastries were nearly gone, they explained staffing issues. I totally understand that, happening to nearly every business since COVID.I want to mention the positive. It is great to have a local business with mostly high quality ingredients especially in the middle of nowhere. They clearly tried harder on the Internet I can see they have a new router or Wifi service provider and it actually connects now and works. Coffee / latte was good, same as always.But....Southfield Store has always had a reputation for excellence. Ingredients were always of the highest quality, similar to or better than what I would find at Flour or Tatte (Boston/Cambridge area bakeries.) Equal to or better than Starving Artist Cafe in Lee, or Marketplace Kitchen Table in Great Barrington.Today was somewhere between Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, in terms of food quality, which is unacceptable. The almond croissant was average, the almond filling was better quality than some, but almost none of it, and the croissant itself was neither tender nor flaky. To be fair, it also is not priced the way it would need to be for it to have enough filling and high quality, as most shops are now at or above $6 for a high quality croissant (meaning fully filled with obviously fresh almond paste of the highest caliber ingredients.)The ham sandwich was sad. I have stopped there many times over the years for in cafe and takeout, ordering the tuna melt, turkey, ham, or other items. Today the ham was largely absent, one half of sandwich had less than one piece. The ham was boiled, tasteless, and similar in quality to what I could (though would not) purchase at Big Y or Price Chopper. The cheese was equally uninspired. At $12 for a sandwich, I expect high quality ingredients. Otherwise, it is not worth the drive. I can get an average quality ham sandwich for 1/2 the price at any supermarket. The bread and mustard was slightly better than average. I can go to Guido's in Lenox or GB and get a better sandwich for $10-$11 without driving out of my way. Or I can go to Rubiner's in GB and get quality and make these at home.I know how hard it is to get quality ingredients, especially far away from cities. But if you want to sell a $12 sandwich the ingredients need to be quality. These were clearly not. I am fairly certain the owners also own The Old Inn on The Green which I used to love, so I believe they can get quality ingredients.I normally purchase several pastries to take home. Today the slices looked like 2/3 of normal size. There were 3 or 4 key lime pie slices and a few other things, but most of the shelf was bare. Even during COVID I saw nearly a full selection of cakes and pastries, expensive but appropriately priced. Again barely anything there.I have always loved Southfield store. I hope I can change this review ASAP. Please bring it back.

We drive the 35 minutes all the way here regularly because they're that good. The sandwiches & especially brunch are so so good and they can do gluten free! They always go above & beyond. For example, Libby went out of her way to make me a smoked salmon sandwich even though brunch had just ended. Can't say enough good things about them!!Dietary restrictions: They offer gluten free and dairy free options!

Quaint store/eatery was a perfect stop for a latte along with a bite to eat. We sat outdoors under an umbrella with locals & visitors alike. Love this village and will be back very soon. Don’t miss this sweet spot was a pleasant surprise!

Seems to be the best spot in this immediate area of the New Marlborough villages for breakfast, sweets, and drinks. The store inside had a limited but clearly high-quality selection of things like baking mixes and syrup which seemed very fairly priced. As for the menu, we attended during their Sunday brunch and the options were excellent, and my eggs Benedict were very tasty and worth the slightly higher brunch price! Their selection of pastries, cakes, tarts, and savory bakes were looked very good in their case. I personally got a slice of ham and cheese quiche and a couple pastries for the road and they were all great the next day! Excellent gem spot right here!

Being new to the area I placed Southfield Store on my list “must-go”. When I did I was pleasantly surprised at what I found. A charming little lunch or breakfast stop seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Covid-19 was in full swing. I was so impressed at the diligence in mask wearing and hand sanitizing, hinting it was a well run operation. The food was surely going to be terrific. I was so right. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by a smiling, courteous staff who obviously have pride in their work and the store. The baked goods are extraordinary. When I was told this was an offshoot of The Inn on the Green up the road, I definitely knew I’d hit the jackpot. Sandwiches and other delights cover the crafted menu, selections you’d be hard pressed to find in any “country store”. Prices are reasonable leaving room for a hefty tip. The manager, Alex, is a perfect fit for this store. He is the son of the Inn owners so you can be sure he knows what he’s doing. All in all, I cannot give anything but accolades for Southfield. It’s something you must enjoy yourself. I’m not quite through the menu yet but so far, I recommend this gem as a “must go” for all who appreciate excellent food, properly trained staff, quite clean and homey atmosphere.
