The garden section was plentiful. We got a nice lamp as well. Great tool selection and interior add on. It is busy so be careful of aisles, u-boats and machinery.

Terrible customer service, rude manager! This is the 2nd time I’ve gone to Swartz Ace Hardware and have been unable to use coupon received in the mail. Asked to speak to manager, he kept telling me the coupon has already been used…I had just received it 2 days prior, then he told me it was expired, expiration date says 01/30/24, when I pointed this out he was back to I had used it already. I also had a coupon in my Ace Harware App, tried to use that, he told me it was online only when it specifically says online or in store. Finally gave up and paid full price. Won’t be going back there, I’ll travel to Ace in Belmont!!!

If I could give zero stars, I would do so. I've shopped at Swartz for many years because it is in the neighborhood, and I support local business. Today I tried to return a defective product. Store staffed refused to issue credit because I could not produce a receipt. Both of these employees have seen me in the store may times. The product is clearly defective, and it is an item that Swartz sells. My word should be good enough. My policy -- I do not do business with retailers that do not know and respect their customers, and are unwilling to stand by the products they sell. If you're going to behave like a big box store, I'll go there instead for better prices and selection.

Usually for hardware shopping I use "The Home Depot", but today I've stoped here just for a couple items.I was very surprised that everyone was so friendly. Each person in store asked me about any help. I didn't need it but it was cool. There are a lot of different stuff, including everything from "first need".Unfortunately, they couldn't make me a copy of a key, but its not thei problem - it is a stupid key from Isuzu Trucks and its very difficult find a place where you could make a copy.Inside were very clean, smells very tasty. All shelfs were clean and everything were on the right place. What I can not say about "The Home Depot".And one more thing - there are a lot of outdoor stuff like coals, grill tools and etc. which you always looking for in the last moment.

I needed a plunger and they had several. I got the bright red one, which also happened to be the cheapest. The clerk was a young guy who was comfortable and well acquainted with speaking with customers and keeping the line moving.

I needed a handsaw but don't know anything about tools. There were two available, one Ace branded saw for $10 and one Stanley branded saw for $20. I asked the guy what the difference between the two was aside from the Stanley having a wooden handle and the Ace having a plastic handle, and he pointed out that the two saws had slightly different numbers of teeth per inch, but that aside from that, the only real difference is the brand. Therefore I went with the cheaper Ace saw. I appreciate the honesty of the staff, even when it means recommending something cheaper (=less sales for them) and will keep that in mind in the future.

Great place. Very organized and helpful. I bought fox urine for my garden and it worked so well. Rabbits will never come when you have it around the garden. Really easy to use, just sprinkle it around the garden

A local staple for close to 100 years, Swartz's Hardware carries most of my hardware needs. Friendly, helpful staff, housewares, plumbing, electrical, tools, grills, yard equipment, snow blowers and a paint department can all be found in this small store front. Formerly part of the True Value chain, Swartz's is now part of the Ace Hardware family and shares its ownership with Tags of Porter Square, Cambridge.Update: I have decided to deduct one star. For the past year and a half we have all been operating under pandemic conditions. Swartz has always had narrow aisles and tight spacing. Social distancing within Swartz is difficult at best but neither staff nor customers care to even try. It seemed that no matter what I was looking at someone would immediately come over to reach between me and the shelf. Almost no attempts to respect my personal space were made at any time. Secondly, even though we have a city mask mandate in effect, few masks were being worn. Yes, the signs were posted but the staff and half the customers chose to ignore them.

Started looking for a particular lubricant I needed, someone came over and found it immediately. The other guy opened the 2nd register up even though there was only one person in front of me. Very good service, I'll come back here instead of going to one of the large home supply stores.

Needed a special bolt to repair an eliptical. Having a difficult time finding it but tried this hardware store anyway. Found two bolts that are similar so hopefully will do the job.Cute hardware store and I liked that it was one of the smaller, non-chain businesses. A nice guy helped us find what we were looking for without us asking.

I love local hardware stores, but man are these guys either incompetent or dishonest. I call about a screen door part, they say they have it. I show up, and nope. Say they'll get it in two days. I come back in three, they say it sells out fast. So either lying or ridiculously bad at inventory management. And only one of the three guys I interacted with even tried to pretend to be polite. I'm willing to pay more for superior service, but pay extra for worse service? No thanks!

Watch out-BIG RIPOFF!! Went in there to exchange 2 Sodastream CO2 cannisters. The way it is supposed to work is you give them your old CO@ tank and they give you a new one. The new tanks cost $29.99, but the refill is only supposed to be $14.99. In the store you can tell them apart because the new ones are in boxes but the refills are not. What Swartz ripoff hardware did was take all the new CO2 tanks out of their boxes and put them on the shelf next to the refill tanks and they are selling them all for $29.99. How many people have you ripped off in this manner?

I called and asked if they had a particular sized machine screw, and not only did they go look, the screws were waiting for me at the register when I got there! Great service, especially for only a $4 purchase. While there, they were also both nice and helpful to the other customers: regulars and new folks like me.

Steve was remarkably helpful tonight! It’s 15 minutes to closing and he not only directly showed me where to find the soil I was looking for, but he was super kind and cheerful as he did it. Gotta love that kinda stuff, when it’s the end of the day on a Friday and someone in a difficult retail job is giving 157%.Thanks brother!

I am a diehard Ace & True Value Customer... and I have spent thousands restoring a car and doing hobbies and self repairs. I will drive and extra 20 minutes to not use Home Depot or Lowes. I just moved to Newton and my first experience here. This is the worst store ever. I ask for help getting a flex line for my toilet, I get a grunt and finger point. When I bring what I found the guy doesnt even respond. I ask if this would work for what I was replacing, no answer. So I paid and gambled. I get home and the line is too long to fit and cant flex to get to the connections. So I knew they didnt have any shorter so i went to Home Depot. Got a guy that helped me match it and get the right one. Grade A service from HD! On my way home I stopped to return, never installed and not even a scratch. As I am waiting in line the woman at the register is complaining about customers going on and on and how they are understaffed. I get my turn and before I can say anything, NO RETURNS ON PLUMBING! ITS POSTED ALL OVER THE PLACE! I tried to explain that could not get help earlier and more complaining! Here excuse was understaffed, I said "Not my problem" She responds with not mine eaither. Grade A douchebag! This place needs to close and she needs to find a job that does not involve people! $15.26 cost them a loyal customer.... I suggest Depot in Watertown, they seem to care.

I am at Ace all the time for things I need for our house and yard. The staff is always really helpful and knowledgeable and I have always found what I need. They have a great selection of gardening tools and yard accessories. Love to support small Newton businesses!

Ordered online for pickup, went to store because order was not ready in the time I needed it. Was told that product was not in stock. Why was I able to order online? Who knows. Ended up spending 50% more to get the same thing in a different color. Can I get a discount? no. Oh well, this is what you have to deal with if you prefer to shop local, or you can go to Home Depot.

This used to be a family owned small hardware store, with loyal, well- informed employees. Then it was sold and became aligned with Ace Hardware. Today I went in and asked a simple question of a young kid. He just said, I don't know. Then I asked a cashier about the price of an item and whether it was a fair price. She said, I don't know.

I try to do the American thing and shop local. I've gone out of my way countless times and probably pay more here even when there's big box a mile away. Went in with what should have been a simple issue over a defective $15 product and left never spending a cent there again. I don't know if it was a bad day or something but the staff was unhelpful and downright rude to my wife and I. The supposed "manager" actually said "whatever" to the two of us like we were children. If I were the owner, I'd be embarrassed that my workers treat customers like that. It's really a shame too because it's nice hardware store in a great neighborhood.

This is the place I have always gone to since moving to the area in 1998. Back then it was different and better assistance with needs. Things change and so did this hardware store, new people, updated store, etc...The last time I was in the store I needed some assistance but, everyone was already helping others or were not identifiable. I am short with back issues so reaching for something on the top peg was difficult for me. I had to use another object to knock the item off the peg. As I caught it I noticed one of the assistance laughing like hell in my direction and then made his way to the cashier when he saw that I could see him. A few years back with former workers, I would have been assisted and not laughed at.I also had keys made for my new apartment and when I had the need to use the basement key, they wouldn't work. I was too disgusted and ashamed to bring them back for recutting.I will now drive out of my way to another location if it means being assisted with respect.Gone are the days of helpful employees.

I can always rely on this Ace. Trust me, I am a librarian, the folks that work here are just as helpful and knowledgeable as your local reference librarian. Mr. Marshall is especially polite and handy helping people on the store floor too.

In a world of big box home improvement supply stores where to get around you need a compass, a good pair of hiking boots, and a Sherpa, this place is an oasis of simple and small, with knowledgeable people who are there to help you. Granted they don't have miles of lumber but they have most of what you need from a hardware store. Nothing but good experiences there, for years.

Great local hardware store, amazing service and much better paint quality than the depot. Depot might be a buck or two cheaper but the time saved stopping her is incalculable, also helping a local company!

Big fan of the Ace. Its local and the staff is awesome. If you are buying Benjamin Moore paint, Marshall will sing to you while it mixes. His knowledge of the worst songs of the 80's is epic.Like all Ace, they have a little bit of everything to get you job done without the garbage part of the big box store.

I purchased ice melt pellets that are to be used to break up ice dams on a roof. I asked the salesman if he knew anything about them and he said you toss them up on your roof and they melt ice and snow causing ice dams to break up. On his advice I decided to try them. They didn't work at all and in some instances made the dams worse. I took the pellets back to Swartz and asked for a store credit to put toward a roof rake. The salesman refused. I am a local customer and go to the store frequently. The pellets cost me $24. I will go to Home Depot which has better customer service and prices.
