This may not be your typical animal shelter as it's located in an older house with the basement of this property being used as a kennel and a few of the rooms as well and the only reason I am giving this place a 5 starr review is because the owner of this place goes above and really beyond to pull and rescue animals that might not otherwise have a new leash on life.

Adopted my Beagle/Harrier mix Jesse (was Duchess) from Lighthouse Animal Shelter 4 years ago. Here is photo of the baby girl. She lives the "good life!" I found Lighthouse to be professional and very concerned about where their dogs were being placed. And thus the reason for my review....she is doing fantastic! She is my absolute best friend and I love her dearly. Thank you so much Lighthouse for bringing her into my life....my little Jesse girl!

I had an awesome experience with the staff and volunteers at Lighthouse.I originally applied to adopt a different dog. The processing of the application took about a week or so and when I called to ask they assured me I would hear back, which I did. When I did hear back they said my situation was not a good fit for the dog I was asking to adopt. They then sent a photo of a different dog, which they said would be a better match. When I went to meet the dog I ended up adopting the staff was up front and honest about the situation. Stella was clearly nervous around new people. The whole first visit she wouldn't come closer than an extended arms reach away, and that was only for the treats. The staff however encouraged me to come back once or twice and she would warm up to me. It took three trips in total over three days but by the end I had a new best fur friend and Stella (the dog) found a forever home. They team is great, they are first and foremost concerned about finding the right fit for a dog. They give as much information as possible and they even followed up two days later to check in. I highly reccomend this team to anyone looking to adopt, its a great alternative to going to a breeder and they are clearly passionate about matching a dog with the fight owner. Trust the reccomendations they give you and you'll find the right dog!

Everyone here was helpful and I adopted Hazel over a year ago. I am very satisfied with my experience. If you can't adopt, this is also a great place to donate to. A+.

I adopted a dog from Lighthouse in Jan, and he is the most loving dog I have ever met. Working with the volunteers at Lighthouse was a great experience, they love all of the animals that come through their doors. They really try to match a dog by best fit and not first come first served- they are honest and up front and want to set everyone up for success. As a rescue, they are patient and kind and do not try to rush anyone into choosing a dog and if it doesn’t work out, Lighthouse will offer advice to help solve the problem or the dog can be returned without any hard feelings. A truly wonderful organization!!!

My parents fostered Tankie from this shelter. Then they adopted him because they fell in love. This shelter rescues so many animals and takes such great care of them while they are in their hands. The volunteers really love what they do and are fully committed to finding each dog the perfect match. P.S. – The are a totally volunteer run organization!! Just every day people like you and me, so make sure you give them an extra smile or thank you next time you see them. Thanks, Lighthouse!

There is always a dog here that just absolutely warms my heart. Consider adoption! My wife and I fostered a dog for over a month who had such an impact on us. We cherished the experience and may do it again in the future! Fostering, volunteering, donating, dog walking, adopting, or even offering your services -- there is a large number of ways that you can help this place out! Please consider helping in whatever way is most comfortable.

Lighthouse Animal Shelter did an amazing job matching us with our pup! We submitted our application and within a day or two we received an email that we were approved. That weekend we were told that there was a possible match for our family and were invited in to meet her. Since that meeting we have loved our Dakota and she is a perfect fit for our family. The process was easy and the volunteers were fantastic. I highly recommend Lighthouse when searching for your next family member!

I wish I could take all the animals there home with me wonderful people there that take in animals and care for them and try to find them homes. Most all of them volunteer their time to do this. So please if you're ever in the New Bedford area please stop by there donate food for the animals if you can, or volunteer to help out in other ways, maybe even adopt one...Please Every little bit helps these loving animals that just want a loving home and to be loved by someone to have a meal everyday. 💓💓💓💓

I had been on the hunt for a rescue for months and I never came across a shelter like Lighthouse. I still can’t believe the effort they put in to find me the perfect dog, rather than just turning me down because the one I liked may not have fit. They kept me updated on the phone, and even via text sending me pictures of potential pups. They gave me advice and provided (and continue to provide) any necessary support needed. Lighthouse truly wants the best for their animals and the adopters, and it shows. Thank you!!!

Can’t say enough about the great experience we had at Lighthouse Animal Shelter. The group of volunteers who work there genuinely care about finding the animals rescued there their perfect match. After filling out our application and getting pre-approved for adoption, Nicole worked tirelessly to find a dog that fit our lifestyle and preferences. We foster to adopted our dog, Luna, and Lighthouse was very attentive and helpful with every question or concern we had along the way. We are so happy with the addition to our family and will definitely be visiting again if we ever expand our fur family.

Best shelter in this area by far, the staff is great and they have a nice big area that the dogs can run around in. My family just put in an application for a dog on Saturday and they have already called our references and looked at the application by today, Monday. You can tell that these people really care for the dogs and I am happy to hopefully be adopting from them! The way that they conduct their home visits and allow you to see how the dog fits into your lifestyle before officially adopting is something that all shelters should do.

Lighthouse is such an amazing shelter! Their staff is so friendly and compassionate about the well-being of their animals. They have a thorough application process to ensure it's the right fit for both the family and the animal. It is so fun to watch the animals get rescued and adopted via their active social media presence. Thank you Lighthouse Animal Shelter for everything to you do day in and day out.

My family and I had a great experience with the folks at Lighthouse. The first time we went we got to visit with multiple pups and we walked away with a couple in mind. After bringing our dog for a meet and greet it became apparent which pup had to go home with us. Thank you so much for all you do for these animals and for the opportunity to bring home our boy, Burton Guster. He’s been a joy and we love him already.

Lighthouse animal shelter has a super friendly set of volunteers who genuinely care about all of their animals and their well being. When I visited the shelter there were dogs playing happily in the outdoor space and others playing together inside. Each dog seems to get special attention and lots of it! I was thoroughly impressed!

I adopted my dog from here and the experience was wonderful! They are so accommodating and allowed my dog to do multiple sleepovers to be sure she was comfortable before finalizing the adoption. The volunteers care so much about the animals and really seem to work hard to make sure its a perfect fit! Wouldnt go anywhere else !

Lighthouse Animal Shelter is a one-of-a-kind animal shelter - I do not have enough positive things to say about it! The volunteers put so much time and effort into matching each and every person with their perfect pal. They are extremely knowledgeable and despite being quite busy on adoption days, they always make sure every visitor gets all of their needs met! The animals they have are exercised well and loved infinitely. I highly recommend adopting your animal from this shelter! The volunteers will go above and beyond to help you.

I was extremely pleased with the adoption experience at Lighthouse Animal Shelter. I had my eye on a Coonhound pictured on the website. I was encouraged to come meet the dog, play with him in the yard, and take him for a walk at a park where he would meet people, other dogs, and perhaps a squirrel or two. The staff was friendly, informative, and obviously had the best interest of the dogs at heart. As a result, I adopted a goofy, lovable Coonhound named Jasper!

Lighthouse is an incredible organization with amazingly dedicated volunteers! They help hundreds of dogs find their forever homes - they are constantly saving lives and helping families find their newest members. They are happy to answer any questions you may have to the absolute best of their ability. Highly recommend!

Wonderful, caring people. We adopted our dog from them. Divine intervention led him to us. He is a perfect fit for our family, a wonderful, goofy, fabulous boy. Would 10/10 work with them again, and recommend anyone wanting a pet to contact them!

The animals look well fed, well exercised, and had the sweetest 2 young ladies making sure each one of them had special attention time. The backyard was big enough for the dogs to run and play. It was clean and well maintained . I, however. Came there to adopt a sweet, adorable cat. I def recommend

We adopted our Oliver a year and a half ago. The staff at Lighthouse was incredibly friendly and helpful, and the process was smooth and efficient. We are so thrilled that's he's a part of our lives now and we've recommended Lighthouse to our family, friends and coworkers. :) Thank you Lighthouse!

Lighthouse animal shelter is absolutely one of the best animal shelters in the area. The volunteers truly care for these animals and they are very professional. The whole process was rather easy and the cost is very affordable. They helped me out a lot adopting my best friend, highly recommend.

LightHouse Animal Shelter is absolutely amazing! They have the best staff & they take such good care of all of their shelter pets. I adopted my cat PrimRose (formally April) from them & she couldn’t be any more perfect! I also have first hand experience with some of their rescues when I did a photoshoot “Kissing Booth” for them & their knowledge on each animals personality, likes, dislikes and back story is truly amazing. They get to know each animal individually as if they are their own which is crazy since animals are constantly being adopted & new ones are constantly being rescued by them. I’d recommend anyone looking for a forever furry friend to go to LHAS!!

This shelter is not great. We’ve had poor experiences with staff that inflict their personal preferences on your experiences with a dog. On multiple occasions, with children present we’ve explained we are looking for family friendly dogs and that had not been comprehended. Staff have gotten aggravated with us when we requested meeting indoors with a dog when it was 30 degrees out an our toddler couldn’t stand outside in the cold and then told us we wouldn’t be a good fit because we were made to stand in the laundry room and then the dog felt uncomfortable. We were refused a home visit to a perfectly suitable home because the staff felt the dog “wasn’t what we really wanted” when we were perfectly happy with the dog we selected. Additionally called our home inappropriate without a home visit. Don’t bother calling me back. Let’s keep the dogs in the basement in cages as opposed to finding a loving home.

At the time we were in between veterinarians and we were unaware of the Adoption process we visited your location and spoke with people we even had our heart set on 2 dogs at 2 different times, not once did anyone sit and tell us the procedures and once someone did and we did everything they suggested we were brushed off made multiple calls and they were not returned and the people we spoke to were very snippy. I didn't want to relay all this information in my first response however your response sounds like we are not responsible people. Since this experience we have worked with another organization and we are now blessed with a wonderful addition to our family. My thoughts is that you be more open with helping people thru the adoption process instead of making them feel inept.

I’m a volunteer at Lighthouse, I usually come between 2-5 times a week to walk dogs! It’s one of my favorite places to be, all the volunteers are super nice and welcoming... and what’s not to love about their super cute pups:) I can’t adopt right now so I help out, but if I could I would totally adopt from here!!

My husband and I were recommended to come here by a friend. We had been talking about wanting to adopt a dog for sometime. We went on Saturday and found a dog that we felt immediately bonded to. The catch... the dog was just dropped off and there was no info to be known about the dog. We also were not taken back when we were told the dog would need surgery to possibly have its foot/leg amputated. We put in the paperwork, the references were called and my husband gets called one day. It's 9am on a Wednesday and he was at work so he couldn't answer. But whoever called had called multiple times within an hour. My husband having his phone in his pocket on vibrate was later reprimanded by his boss for his phone going off nonstop. When he went on his lunch break he checked his phone and had a text message from the shelter saying that the dog we were adopting had other applicants and if he didn't answer right then and there we were going to be passed over. Being stunned he never responded. I dont know why it was so urgent or why no one had tried to call me. But the message was so extreamly rude that we figured it was best to go elsewhere. There was no other attempts to contact us outside of this one time and we were extremely disappointed. I just hope the dog found a good home, even if it wasn't with us.
