My first time visiting and I will be back. A good selection of freshwater fish in a variety of sizes. I got two rope fish and a tank decoration. The staff were helpful and knowledgeable. One drawback is that the prices marked on the tanks were difficult for me to read.

I have been a customer for 21 years..Always crowded with happy smiles throughout the store..Rick, Justin, Megan and team simply rock..For reptiles, perhaps the best on the East Coast as all are credentialed + reptilian zoo experience.

80 dollars on fish just to have 6 die within 48 hours. I took them back once and they acted like I was running a scam that I didn’t get them there or were returning older fish even though it was only 24 hours and my water tested fine. The manager tried to tell me I had fish eating them and I should check my tank for other fish even though I’ve had a tank for 14 years so I’m pretty sure I know what is in there. I’ve had the ones pictured for 6 hours and they’re dead already. They took my receipt because you’re only allowed to bring them back once even though they guarantee 7 days on their fish… way too expensive for this to happen.

I have tried this place out but no longer. On two occasions I spent money on freshwater fish only to have several die on me within a few days. Tried bringing them back as they have a 7-day return policy only to have them not honor the policy. Always some question with the water quality or some other nonsense. Been keeping planted tanks for over a decade and I never had any issues with fish purchased from House of Tropicals in Glen Burnie. I am convinced Rick's does a poor job with its fish inventory and it only takes one visit to their fish area to see why. Such a mess is an understatement. I am done dealing with Ricks.

I don't know much about fish but you don't have to when the store you go to has employees that are helpful and knowledgeable. You just need to ask questions. It takes 45 minutes to drive here from our house and it's worth it to go here rather than PetSmart or one of the other large stores who are understaffed and overpriced. Like some of the other reviews said it is true that the store could use some tidying up. But that becomes easily overlooked thanks to the good service provided by the employees. Not to mention there is a huge selection of fish. If you can't find when you're looking for they can probably get it for you. Definitely worth the drive. Riding the

This is a very disappointing pet store that does not care. The staff is very lacking in knowledge on the live stock that they sell. I asked a staff member to help identify a coral in one of their tanks. No staff in the store had any ability at all to identify coral. They made zero effort to reach out to anyone that may know until I asked, "So this is it? You just don't know? You don't have anyone who works here you can reach out to?" I was told they they sell things based off of what is written on the tank, zero care or concern about the animal. I have found this store to be consistently staffed by nice but woefully underpreparpared workers that lack knowledge of the pets they sell. This leads to people owning inappropriate pets that are not well taken care of. You work with animals, you should have a higher standard. I would be embarrassed if my staff could not answer basic questions and made zero effort.

First time visiting today and I won't be back. The female employee was nice and asked if I needed help but the other two gentleman working were very short, dismissive, and rude to deal with. They acted as if I was bothering them and were not pleasant in the slightest. There were probably only 3 other customers inside of the store at the time I was there. They have a decent selection of fish but they're definitely overpriced. I'll take the extra 15 minute drive and go to House of Tropicals which is 1000x better in price, customer service, and selection. Disappointed since I wanted to find a new spot closer to me after having moved farther away from HoT.

In my opinion, the owner should try to improve on courtesy of employees. One guy was very nice to me. (Has braces). The second young man asked if I needed help. I had a few questions. He wouldn’t walk to me. I said “why is the figure 8 pea puffer rolling?”. He gave me a look like I was crazy. I said is that something these fish do? I wanted two for a 55 tank. I did not tell him that I had an open tank. I just said I have dwarf pea puffer. They couldn’t go with them. Had he walked over to me he could have seen the two fish barrel rolling. Instead he acted like I was an idiot. BTW, don’t buy anything in that particular tank. It has to have bad bacteria built up in there. The 2 puffer have a bacterial infection causing them to barrel roll. Guess he had no clue. So I just played along and said I wanted to put it with EBA. He said you can’t. He Tried to walk away. Anyway, I said these EBA’s, are they all the same price even though you have fry EBA and some a little larger. So that was a dumb question too I guess. Two EBA for that price at that size is crazy. The large Frontosa should not be that price either. They are getting beat up by the aggressive fish he has them with. Also, put a lower price on the Indian Ring Neck. She is stressed out. And she has destroyed every single tail feather. She is not supposed to be acting that way. If my female IRN acted that way, I would do what is necessary to provide her a safe space. That IRN is behind glass, and no interaction. Put her somewhere so she can be bonded with someone, talk to her, etc. she is only going to end up a disturbed bird when she finds a home. If you knew the personality of IRN you would interact her with humans now. Being hand fed is not going to make her a nice bird. I hate to be picky, but the guy was so rude, I walked out. I was going to buy a few Geo and the Nimbochromis, but that young man led me to believe he didn’t want to be bothered. Instead of making people look stupid, try educating customers and seeing if they do actually have the proper containment for fish instead of making them look stupid and walking away.

Wonderful old school pet store, good employees. The front of the store could be a little more organized. Good variety of fish, also have reptiles, birds, and small animals. The best thing is fish though. Supplies and toys marked pretty high.Edit- one less star for decency. Some individuals feel the need to bash and start with other pet stores. One of which is my favorite. Not cool. Just because a store near you closes doesn't mean your life will be better. In fact. The more 3rd party stores that close, the laws will close in on you because theres less to focus on.Less places for families to visit and be amazed.

I’m genuinely surprised this place has the reviews it has. I don’t I’ve ever experienced racism like I did in this place. My mother and I are “white passing” and we often switch from speaking English to Spanish back and forth. The moment Spanish came out of our mouths the amount of rolled eyes was incredible. One of the employees went as far as to facepalm. Trying to ignore this my mom asked a question and Rick Jr himself was SO incredibly rude to her and asked if she was actually listening. That’s on top of how malnourished these poor animals are. I spoke to a friend that rescues frogs and she expressed a similar experience. Her and her cousin kept getting harassed by one of the employees. The place is disgusting as well as the trash that works there.

We go to Ricks weekly for feeders. We bought my daughters first ball python from there for her Christmas present, then we bought a giant hairy desert scorpion 3 week later, we bought an albino ball python from there within the last month and on Saturday we bought a bearded dragon. None of them had mites, they’re all 100% healthy. The snakes have had no issues eating and are thriving. We enjoy going to ricks. The employees are all knowledgeable, and find a way to connect with the customers. There’s a young girl that works there that my daughter absolutely loves because she likes reptiles and cosplay just like her. Some of the lower reviews posted seem kind of petty. Rick does what he can with a small space. He makes it work. I like the small cozy feeling. Keep doing what y’all do. I’ll see you Friday!!

I've read the reviews about racism and rudeness and ask myself where. I'm native American, therefore my family and I get mistaken for Spanish all the time. I'm also not the best dressed individual, I'm a contractor and where workbcloths all the time. I have never went into Rick's and been spoken down to or looked down on. We drive from Lorton VA to find the fish we want not the12 junk species the big box stores push down people's throats. The staff are helpful, they can be alittle testy when they are really busy, I can't blame them and the animals I've purchased have all been healthy and lasted for years as in they are still going. I recommend the place and strongly agree that considering personal perspective. I bash BMW. Doesn't mean it's not a good car just means I look for reasons not to like it because it's over rated. People look for problems. It's a good store, yes it's crowded and needs organized, great selection but not a beginner store. Make up your own mind stop being drones.

Rick's is the best! All his animals are well taking care of. I brought my king snake up there he had a bad shedding on his eye. And Rick fix his eye with no charge. The people who said his reptile don't have heat lamps are on DRUGS.

Great selection of fish and frag coral for salt. Newer employees are not knowledgeable so make sure to get the gentlemen who is super helpful. Store is crowded and fish area is super dark, so watch your step with water on floors or hoses.

I can’t speak towards the aquarium side of things but this store is an absolute nightmare for reptiles. Only their beardies receive supplemental heat. several adult snakes in tiny cramped enclosures with no hides or enrichment.Owner pushes soaking electrolytes on reptile customers, very pushy.

Have been here many times since the 90s. Back when we had a macaw and double yellow headed Amazon parrot. Years later it was the spot for our tarantulas, snakes, reptiles, and sugar gliders. Now it's a great place for the occasional rat toy or treat. It's a little cramped as it's a small space with a lot going on, but it's never people crowded. The fish area is super peaceful. Makes up for the slight claustrophobic store. I love there is no loud music or ultra bright overhead lights. The employees are helpful but not in your face, pushy, or trying to talk or sell your ear off. As social anxiety goes it's hard to voice to some salespeople that "I'm not being rude, I just have a hard time talking to people." I've never had that issue here. The prices for what we buy are reasonable. Even if you don't need anything, if you are eating at the Chinese place or Little Caesars you should stop in to see all the cute animals, birds, and amazing fish. I'll shop here for life.

I drive over 40 minutes away to come here. We have gotten so many animals from his shop. My family and I absolutely adore it there. Each employee plays a vital role and each know something beneficial to help run the store. Especially Mr.Rick. I cannot say enough about the man. He's wonderful, will help you succeed with any animal!I did alot of research prior to my investment but he had the knowledge of making it thrive. Quality store!!Need great feeders for your pet? Look no further! His shop has it all!!

Great store and great selection. There are oddball fish and plants that I have never seen in another shop. Staff usually knows their stuff. Of course if you are asking a fish person about rabbits, they may need to double check with another employee. Nobody knows it all, but some of them come close. They do get busy in there so you may need to wait, or you may get handed off to another employee that knows more about your pet, so don't take it personally. TThis is one of the few pet shops left that aren't a supermarket. The owner actually works there. It is well worth supporting this small business.

Rick and his staff are wonderful!! My boyfriend, his daughter, and I made the trip up yesterday to purchase an axolotl and had such a great experience. All of their animals were so well taken care of and the staff answered all of our questions. We will definitely be back to buy more black worms for our adorable little buddy

They have a large variety of fish. A few other random pets too. They don't seem to have enough help for good service. Also they only give store credit, not return your money.

While we are very pleased with our purchase the gentlemen that "helped" us, didn't really help us at all. If you are a novice reptile or amphibian owner like myself and my daughter are, then do your homework (which I had and when I asked for certain things I was told they weren't necessary) After getting home and reading more in depth, those items are necessary...I'm not disappointed with the purchase at all, I just wish the employee would have been more knowledgeable and taken the time to actually assist us with our purchase.

They have a cool back area with reptiles and more fish. Mind the parrot, he apparently bites hard if you get too close and when you first look at him looks like a taxidermied bird. This place is great for bird/reptile/amphibian/fish owners, not as much for dog/cat owners. They have some supplies but those animals are not their specialty.

Out of every pet store I've been to, this local business has probably been the most knowledgeable when it comes to animal care. Huge selection of freshwater and saltwater fish, as well as diverse selection of other animals. Carries pretty much everything you'll ever need for a pet setup. Very polite staff who know what they're doing when it comes to keeping animals and giving the best care advice to customers.

the store is very nice with everything you need for fish! i personally take interest in goldfish, and the large tank near the checkout is usually where i get mine, though a little bit pricey you are paying for better quality fish:)

Very friendly pet and fish store. Has a wide variety of fish, including frogs, and on occasion axolotls. The staff are fairly knowledgeable on all their fish from what tank size they need, if they're friendly or aggressive, how big they get, and if they're right for the current tank you own. Also carries live feed for my fish :) has sales sometimes if you want to buy more than one of the same type of fish. One day I might buy a tarantula from them! I recommend them if you want to start up on owning fish. Or if you want a new small pet like rabbits, ferrets, Guinea pigs, reptiles, and some birds.
