Pretty cool area to visit and explore. The staff is super knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the fort. We went during off season, so the buildings weren't open but we were told during season the buildings open and they have people in period appropriate attire.Restrooms: Permanent and temporary restrooms are around the park.Picnic area: Tons of areas to have picnics and easy access around the park

Great place for a walk. Stop by the Visitors Center to get information or just drive right to the Fort or Trails. Plenty of history around the Fort itself, and a big field for ant kids that need to run off energy. If you'd rather go for a walk in the woods, there are several hiking trails just down the road at the Big Pool area. Big Pool also had a boat ramp area.

We went in April. It was a quick stop off the c&o bike trail, and no one was around but the fort door was open so we took a look around. It's in the boondocks now. Imagine what it was like in the 1750s!Restrooms: Portopotty for us, but later in the season they have restrooms that will be open.

If you are a history buff, this is really amazing to see. Lots of information from a lovely young lady in period dress and in the welcome area. Well worth the stop if you are in the area. And bonus, it's only a short distance from the Antietam battlegrounds.

I enjoy seeing historical places in my travels. Fort Frederick is the only stone fort built by a British Colony during the French and Indian War in 1756. There is a small admission fee and worth the visit!

Tony and I stopped by Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool, MD. We got there at 4pm and the visitors center was already closing. It cost $5 for our vehicle for park entrance fees. We couldn't watch the 10 minute video because they were closing due to no activity. We drove over to the parking lot for the actual fort. The Fort was still open but unmanned so the interior buildings were locked. The Fort was built in 1756 for the Indian wars against the white settlement. It was later used in Revolutionary war and Civil War. It's almost 300 yrs oldIt's a stone fort with very thick high walls.Definitely a nice park. There is a store but it was closed too. There is a campground down along the Potomac River.Definitely recommend you visit when in the area. I would go back again! A great price!!!

Very pretty and clean. Great if you want a historical experience mixed with wildlife and nature. The display they have in the visitor center is pretty cool and gives a lot of information about the people and armies that were in the area during the American revolution. Its a 10/10 historical site and I would definitely recommend everyone should visit at least once

Great state park. Sunday of Labor Day Weekend and very few folks here. Was just great. MD has some of the best spots to get away to if you are willing to venture just a bit further than most.

This is a fascinating historical site and one I wasn’t aware of until I first visited. I have been interested in the history of the French and Indian War period and what life was like for colonists on the frontier. The guides here were very knowledgeable and I learned a great deal about the role of colonial militias during this period. This is definitely worth a visit.

We were here for the annual market Fair. The event is a lot of fun and worth a visit. Lots to do and see. Plenty of artisans making 18th century pieces by hand and it's incredible learning how much life has changed. Highly recommend the Market Fair in April.

We went there during the 1800 century Market Fair. The fort was open. I didn't see any staff around. They did have reactors in the fort. Great place to see. I think the fort was rebuild sometime in the 1900s

Estimated duration 15 minutes to 1 hour.A revolutionary and civil war for reconstructed in the early 1900s by the civilian conservation corps. For is in very good condition and barracks are living history museum. As you enter the park if you turn to the right towards the visitor center there's a large parking lot that is a 5-minute paved trail to the fort. Or you can continue straight headed towards the campground and park in a smaller parking lot right next to the fortPark offers free fly fishing gear rentals at the general store.

A beautifully bucolic, halcyon setting, steeped in history and wonderfully presented and maintained by the Marland Park Service, which, in 2024, is celebrating its 100th birthday. Perfect place for a relaxing stroll or a family picnic, away, but not too far from the hustle and bustle of the chaos that is the Baltimore-Washington metroplex.Restrooms: Clean and well maintainedPicnic area: Open space picnicking. Bring a blanket or ground cloth and folding chairs/stools

Historic, interesting, and lovely. We were the only visitors inside the fort on a beautiful weekday afternoon in November. A friendly welcoming staff member unlocked the barracks for us to view, and told us interesting facts about the fort, its construction, and daily life within. The grounds are well tended and historical items—both genuine and recreated—are on display. The Maryland Park Service is doing a great job in preserving and presenting this 262-year old icon from the French and Indian War period. We visited on a an uneventful weekday afternoon off-season, but weekend visitors will find more interpretive activities and exhibits. Check the website for special events. The location is lovely—woods and fields near the Potomac River. Nice visitors center, restrooms, picnic areas, and most pleasant and caring staff.

Such a superb Park! Maintained with the most care. The 18th century market fair is a great event and all were extremely happy that they're hosting it again for 2022 and so on! I'd highly recommend this location for any daytrips!

We went to Fort Frederick State Park in Maryland this weekend. We always have good luck with state parks, but this one was awesome! Small campground with not alot of amenities, but that was part of the charm. No electric sites, so we used our solar and lithium stations. Very clean site on the Potomac River. Great trails at the park and near by. No dump station either. Very friendly staff. Pet friendly.

Nice historical site next to the Potomac. The Park rangers, in period costumes, can answer your questions about the fort. Park at the office and take the hike or bike to the fort. There are a few picnic tables and a shop near the fort also.

Fort Frederick is a underappreciated gem in western Maryland. Originally built in 1756, it was constructed to protect the colony from the French. It later served as as a POW camp during both the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Restored by the CCC, it features authentic representations of how the barracks would have looked long ago. Uniformed re-enactments by park staff allow easy access to their deep knowledge about the site. There's also a small shop that sells prepackaged drinks, ice cream, souvenirs, and camp supplies. The shop may not be open on weekdays so call ahead to confirm current hours.

I went there just to go to the C&O canal. I haven't been to fort Frederick Park itself except to drive through it but it looks pleasant enough. I will update my review when I actually go back and spend some time at the fort.

Superbly maintained and interpreted French & Indian War fort (built 1756) with a truly impressive selection of books in the gift (or "sutler's") shop. The staff and volunteers really know their history.

An amazing and fascinating historical site in Maryland. The staff there provides an excellent demonstration and sort of "realization" about this former British fort. You can really picture what it was like to be in this fort right near the Potomac River in Big Pool, MD.

Very interesting place to visit. Admission is free although they do charge for parking (not that I saw anyone paying). They have a small store next to the fort and several people dressed in costume providing background about the history of the fort.Didn’t take too long to walk through it all, but it was still an interesting visit.

Wow, What a wonderful park!!!!!We first arrived at the visitor center. We paid for the entrance and enjoyed the exhibit. We then decided to drive to the fort. You can also walk.Plenty of parking, a gift shop with a/c and bathrooms on site. The fort is well maintained. The staff and volunteers are GREAT!!!! They are eager to talk to you, they want you to ask questions and interact with them. There were several activities going on and at all times you could talk to staff dressed in period costumes. They also had somebody talking about WWII.I thought we were going to be there maximum 1 hour but it turned into close to 3 hours, and we left because we were hungry but we could still stay there because there were more reenactors. Now I must visit Fort Ligonier and Fort Necessity.I will definitely return. You must visit.
