There is no other way to describe this other than quirky. Not a true (yacht outfitting) chandlery, more of seafaring antique and knickknack store; yet I buy something almost every time I'm there. The owner's marlinspike knot work items and sea inspired jewellery is fabulous (and I believe his true passion). I'm not sure if it's still true, but we have been in his shop in January. So he's open, at least part of the time, during the winter.

Amazing objects, run the gamut from useful to decorative; antique to just-made. I ordered a knot-work leash made for my little Jack Russell and received it in the mail within the week. It is the strongest, classiest leash ever. I purchased a handmade canvas messenger bag with a knotted strap and striking hand -stitching. It is admired wherever I go.

Like lots of places in Maine, it's open when they feel like opening. So going there is hit or miss, but if you're in Stonington, there's no harm in walking over there. Besides, if they're not open you can always go to the awesome gift store around the corner by the water. Marlinspike Chandlery has some really cool pieces and a nice range of prices, and when the proprietor feels like talking to you, you may have a good chat. In essence, the experience is very Maine.
