What a cool place to spend a few hours! They have a fascinating 20 min doc filmed in the 30’s documenting the fascinating history of logging here in maine. It really is incredible the way they worked back then and how they used these massive logs to guide itself downstream! This gem of a museum speaks to the ingenuity of humans because after this backbreaking remarkable work, shipbuilders are using this very same wood to make ships that will sail around the world!I am awed 💜

The Lumbermens Museum is a multi-building facility that has a nice welcome building with a gift shop and a wonderfully educational, narrated historical film that shows how lumber harvesting and log transport was done just prior to and at the onset of mechanization. There are full scale buildings that show what a log camp (one room) looked like circa 1820 and a more modern two-room camp connected by a "dingle." The horse hovel houses a variety of historical items used in logging as does the tool shed. There is also a blacksmith shop and a pavilion that houses the Lombard Steam Log Hauler. The welcome building also houses a ranger's desk for the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument (not to be confused with Baxter State Park).

Went to the Fiddlers Fiddleheads festival in Patten, Maine and walked thru their old museum fronts and saw some pretty old machinery. Take a peek. Also snapped some pix of Mt. Katahdin while we were there.

Drove by on our way back from Caribou, but sadly the museum was still closed at that time of the morning. Stopped anyway and checked out the steam lombard displayed out front to get a feel for the local history of logging.

Great place of the History of Maine. Good start with about a 20 min video and a good map to walk through plus information about the happenings of the lumbermen and their camps plus the lives of those men working the wood. Very beautiful place a must see in Patten Maine.

The entire museum was very well designed and supplied with artifacts. The video was the best I've ever seen. It was original, authentic footage of the lumbering industry in the early to mid 20th century. To see the actual artifacts used by lumber men in the video added to the experience. Every aspect of the industry was represented with originalal pieces. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful with questions as well. Not to be missed if you're in the area.

This was a great learning opportunity about our logging past. Wish my grandfather was still around to tell stories about working in the woods in those days, working with the horses & the Lombard skidded. Want to take my grandkids there soon!

We drove over 200 miles for the Founders Day advertised on the website. The museum was open but there was no blacksmithing, wood turning, bake sale, etc. VERY DISAPPOINTING!Museum has a treasure trove of logging artifacts, history, wonderful replicas and diaramas but we really wanted to see the woodturning and blacksmithing. Please update your website !

My husband loves wood. A major reason we came so far for vacation was this museum. The 25-minute black-and-white movie in the main office was both entertaining and educational.

I enjoyed seeing the pictures of the actual men, horses, equipment & techniques they used in those days that put a substance to the stores my Dad use to tell us kids about when he use to work up in the Millinocket Mountains with his Dad's farm horses, traveling up from Old Town, Me., in order to make ends meet to support the large family. The family had walked away from their potato farm in Caribou, Me. during the great depression.Thankyou !
