After hiking ~4 miles around the entirety of Monhegan's shores, a hot fish sandwich from the Fish House was just about the most delicious thing I have ever eaten. The fish itself is hand-breaded and came in a sizeable portion. The bun and sauce were divine. This place is a "must visit" whenever you make the trip to Monhegan.

Pricey, as is everything on the island, but the food overall is quite good. We had fish tacos, shrimp tacos, lobster, and a lobster roll across two visits and they were all very good. Wait can be a little long at times, but nothing too unreasonable. Staff was helpful and hospitable. Would recommend stopping in for sure. Atmosphere is rustic but nice views of the harbor on the picnic tables and chairs.

Tiny, no fuss - one of those places one may refer to as a 'hole in the wall' but in the best way. Step in and place your order for fresh, tasty, traditional Maine treats; step outside and sit at a picnic table or make yourself comfortable along the shore. I visit each time I'm in the area!

Food here is always awesome. Great place to order a meal, pick up some fresh fish, or arrange for a lobster dinner.

Ordered crab tacos. Served on a street taco that was about 4 inches in diameter the kind you get at the supermarket in a bag of 30. Some shredded crab meat with a spicy sauce. You get two for about $20. Not worth it. My wife couldn’t eat hers. The young woman who brought them to our picnic table was nice, but the woman who took our order was rather nonchalant and non-caring. She didn’t tell us where napkins and utensils where; we had to find the ourselves. I guess she thought we were there many times and knew our way around. Since my wife did not like the tacos, we got a calamari salad. It was served in a small plastic bowl which couldn’t have been more than 3/4 of a cup. It cost $6. Luckily we knew where the forks were this time.A lot of people were telling us this was a great place for what is offered on this rather spartan island, but not by us. Maybe we ordered the wrong food or got there at the wrong time.

Insanely good fish sandwich. The lobster bisque was the MVP and the clam chowder was the best I've had in years 🙏🏽

Must stop place for seafood on the island. Shrimp tacos were surprisingly first rate (prefer fish tacos usually).Right on the beach, take-out only but outdoor picnic tables or just sit on the sand.

Best chowder and lobster roll of the vacation, such a great spot right on the water. Be prepared to sit outside!

In two days on Monhegan this week I ate lunch here twice. Crab roll the first day, salmon burger the second day. Both of them tasty and good sized portions. It's hard to beat the location, right on a sandy beach with views of the harbor, and picnic tables scattered around. This place looks like an old fish shack should look, not all gussied up for big city folks. Pop up the hill for a growler from the microbrewery if you are so inclined.Highly recommended for a light shore lunch on the beautiful island.

While there aren't many options on Monhegan, this rating doesn't grade on a curve, it is quite good. Expect shabby conditions, but the picnic tables, scattered among the lobster fishing gear, provide basic comfort and shade to enjoy delicious fish tacos (what we enjoyed) in a, let's say, rustic setting. As my friend said, "this isn't Nantucket", which is fine by me.

If you are looking for good food and a spectacular setting this is the place. Highly recommend the lobster dinner, but make sure to order early as they get busy and close by 7. Also really good are the fish tacos. There is a large selection of fresh fish to cook yourself. Located on Fish Beach you can let the kiddies climb on the rocks while you enjoy the scenery under the beach umbrellas.

I only used the restaurant part of the business. The whole island suffers from similar problems. I came unprepared for the lack of rest rooms and running water. So this place has neither (for customers). The food was OK, not great. The service was very poor, but functional. No indoor seating. But at lunch time this is the only show in town. In general I felt like an inconvenience to this establishment rather than a valued patron. To be fair this seemed to be the case for this island's entrepreneurs. I probably wouldn't go to this establishment again. The island was lovely.

If it wasn't one of the few places to eat, on this desolate, non tourist friendly island , it would be out of business. The space where you order food is tiny and it gets very crowded. There is no indoor dining space, only a few, communal, picnic tables outside in the sun and you have to wait until someone else leaves to find a place to sit down. The day we were there, they were out of many of the offerings on their limitted menu.Their salads were the low grade type served at local delies. The lobster in their lobster rolls was rubbery, not the crisp, fresh tasting treat Maine is famous for. This place is known for it's smoked fish, which is made daily. But that is apparently reserved for the locals, only. The whole trip to Monhegan Island is not worth the time or the expense. It's a run down and dirty "artist hamlet". Might be nice if you want to "escape from civilization" for a summer, but there is nothing on the island to support tourists on a day trip.

One should not venture to Monhegan Island if you require an abundance of “creature comforts”. It is a pretty stripped down experience. Although, good customer service should never be stripped down, the proprietors of the Fish House have found a way to make that work. The food and ambience is great...if only they could deliver it in a manner that made me feel good about supporting them, rather than a burden or inconvenience.Shame on any establishment for operating in this fashion, and then having the audacity to ask their customers if they want to leave a tip (this is a totally take out facility) before their service experience has really begun.

The annual trip to Monhegan wouldnt be the same without chowder and lobsters from the fish house. We've tried lobster all over the coast of Maine, but this year Monhegan's were by far the sweetest. Can't wait to come back next year.

The Fish House Fish Market sells fresh fish, but also makes food and there are several picknick tables outside where you can eat. We had haddock sandwiches and they were very tasty. The fish in their case looked very fresh. Some of the picknick tables are right on the water with a nice view of the docks and Mananna (the little island just off shore). It's a nice place to relax and have a meal. Note that none of the places that serve food on the island are allowed to serve alcohol. So if you want to have wine or a beer with lunch you have to buy it at one of the places that sells alcohol and bring it along.

Island sparrows trapped to die in Fish House shrimp traps. The first place we went when we arrived on the island was to have lunch at Fish House. The walk on the road leading up to the shack was lined with stacked shrimp traps, typical for the island. My husband and I noticed, when passing by, a flurry, and realized several island sparrows were trapped inside the shrimp traps, pacing wildly in the hot noon sun and desperate to escape the traps. We informed the person at the counter of the disturbing situation. She pointed us to a man she said was the owner. He stood in conversation with some folks, and we introduced ourselves and alerted him to the plight of the trapped birds. He laughed dismissively and said ”I’ll go get my cat”. We had lunch and left for our hike, trying to forget what we had seen, and the callous exchange. The next day we walked past and stepped down the lane to look: there were still birds madly struggling in desperation to get out of the traps.I went back to the shack to ask again for help and the server shrugged her shoulders. I came outside to see that my husband had climbed up the stacked traps and was trying to free the birds by turning the trap for an escape hatch. In the one trap there were four dead sparrow corpses, and it broke our hearts to see that needless loss. The one surviving sparrow finally shook free and flew out. My husband was able to release three more sparrows from a second trap. That was our wedding anniversary on Monhegan island. We now think of Fish House with revulsion and will never return, perhaps only to see if any more innocent island birds are trapped and needing rescue. Even walking past that stretch of road is heartbreaking. Proud nature-loving Monhegans and birders, we think you should know about this. Please talk to the Fish House and others about the risk of trapped birds. Of boycott this establishment. Thank you.

Ordered fish tacos after 30min asked if they had forgotten? Was told no later than 10 min longer after another 15min i asked again was told lost power and kitchen didnt recieve the order? How ever several orderders were going out.... I went in after 50 minutes and was told to take your money and get to f÷&$k out... Not kidding!!! Ran in to the owner's and they didn't seem to care or offer any solution was told ok ok we will look into it... Really a shame much better when the old owner's ran the show these people need some help in many area's!! These locals will NOT be back and we strongly recommend to all BEWARE

Monhegan may be 12 miles at sea, but the Fish House is 12 feet from the harbor and always has a great selection of fresh catch! Fish tacos are wicked as well!!

Outdoor tables on the beach. Food on the island is expensive but Shermie is far more reasonable than the inns. Love the smoked salmon.
