I gave it a one star because 1. I walked in and I had asked about a certain dog I seen on the page and it she was available because we really wanted to meet her. The staff told me I had to fill out an adoption application to see her? I said I’m unsure if I wanted to adopt her without even meeting her? I had my 2 toddlers with me at the time. He said well that’s how we do things.. so I filled it out and waited…and waited… for 20 minutes with 2 toddlers and nobody came and asked us if we needed help or came and said we could meet the dog. Nothing. So we left… I feel as though the staff is unorganized and the man at the counter was RUDE.

I just adopted a kitty from here and was sent home with a cat that I CANNOT HOLD OR PET HIM!!! He literally turns feral when you try to touch him. (He freaks out clawing and just trying to get away).Couldn't take him to my free vet check because he is ALWAYS hiding and you only have a week. I cannot believe you send people home with pets that don't like human contact. I was told he is good with people...... CLEARLY HE ISNT!!!!!EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED!!!

We got our two tuxedo kitties Mittens will be 2 in July and Moxie is 12 weeks today. We sure love them. They are both little love bugs who like to be held and rocked. Very relaxed and play well together. Only took 2 days for them to fall in love! Best thing that’s happened to us! They bring so much joy in our lives! Thank you for the perfect kitties

Brought a friend and her daughter there to surrender their two cats. They are being forced to move from their apartment and cannot find affordable housing. So many tears were shed 😢 to have to say goodbye to their beloved pets. Grateful that the Humane Society were willing to take them. Such a great organization. 👍

First time adopting - 2 week recent Louisianna feline arrival. Adoption process was a breeze, $$$ for 1 feline, but understandable what with "fully vaccinated, spayed, chipped, Vet checked" status. Staff cares very much for their charges, work hard to make the right owner/pet connection, & very understanding if a connection does not work out, as 1 did not between a new parent and out of control canine that was returned.

Great experience! The staff here we're super kind and compassionate, they clearly love what they do.They never made me or son (who was hopping around with excitement)feel like we were a burden (even though they were extremely busy). They seemed genuinely excited for us as we adopted our cat and provided us with some food and a list of vets. You made me and my son's adoption experience amazing. Thank you!

Delaney (unsure on spelling, sorry!) was by far the friendliest service I've recieved in 2023. She is the best and set us up with a friendly little soul to take home and love. If I ever want to expand the family with another fuzzy friend I am only going here. Thank you so much!

Just got another rescue 🙏. Gracey is a new arrival from Georgia. She didn't have a great start, but we are determined to make sure she loves the rest of her life. Her new big brother isn't too sure. He's been spoiled 🙄 for the last two years since he rescued me.

Went to look at cats and I was so disgusted when I went in loddy. Cats do not look healthy at all. There were blankets covering all of the cat windows. Also the staff is not very helpful

All I want is an Emotional support dog and I can't find one. There's no help or there so expensive I can't afford it. So I guess I'll continue to be sad, crying and alone

Adopted a beautiful puppy yesterday. Have to be patient with the process as there were a lot of people in line. But we'll worth it!

Great staff, clean facility. A valuable part of the community! They take excellent care of the animals, and all pets are up to date on routine shots and microchipped before adoption. They even have a "working cats" program for folks looking for barn cats.

The staff are excellent and strive to ensure animals are well cared for and find a good home. I highly recommend that people get involved and volunteer their time there so they can see the level of effort is put into improving the lives of surrendered and orphaned animals.

Thank you for helping, Thank you for helping animals get adopted. Thanks for even humanely euthanizing instead of letting animals suffer for our own selfish desires. I know animals have feelings, pain, sadness, happiness, scared etc... but they don't have souls! They don't choose the only way to be saved thru repentance and believing that God sent Jesus to die for us, so that he save us. So we know that once animals die, it's as though they were never born (to them). Sure, we miss them, but they don't know any different. We need to stop being so selfish! It's more humane to put them down without any suffering than to let them suffer if there's no other immediate alternative. I would volunteer, but then I would have more than the 7 cats I have.

I adopted a cat a few months ago and she became ill. My partner and I both lost our jobs and couldn't afford to take kitty to the doctor. As she got worse I decided the best thing to do for her would be to surrender her back. The staff was amazingly understanding and compassionate. I didn't feel like I was being judged. I have total trust in them. Even if she doesn't make it through this illness I truly believe they'll do everything they possibly can to make her transition peaceful and painless, something I couldn't do. Thank you, GAHS, for what you do for pets and for their people. I don't doubt for a second that I did the right thing for Greta.

My neighbor moved out of our building and abandoned two cats. After a few days I heard them crying so I broke into her now empty apartment and took the two cats to the shelter. I explained the situation, that the cats were abandoned and I am not a cat person nor in a position to care for them. They told me how nice I was taking care of them and getting them somewhere safe… a year later I went to adopt a dog. I’m a dog person and my situation had improved so I could afford to adopt! I was so excited… until the lady at the front desk explained that because I “abandoned” two animals into the shelter’s care that I was unfit to adopt and had been black listed. Unacceptable! I’m being punished for saving the cats, apparently I was supposed to leave them to starve.

I try to give shelters a break because I truly appreciate the work they do with rehoming animals; however, I would not recommend this shelter if you have other pets in the home. The behaviorist was not present during our first meet and greet between my dog and the dog we wanted to adopt. We were told we could have another meet & greet when she would be present. Instead, we received an email from the behaviorist that our home was not a good fit for the dog (even though she was not present during the interaction and no videos were taken). This dog was in the shelter for 3 days & then was placed with a foster for over a month. The shelter & the foster had different ideas about this dog’s behavior and her needs (keep in mind the difference in time spent in the 2 places). The meet and greet in itself was interesting, as it was only 15 minutes. When we mentioned that it might just take more time to integrate the 2 dogs, we were met with eye rolls & snarky comments (super professional). Some dogs take longer to adjust to each other, but then they get along just fine. We expressed that we were more than prepared to integrate the dogs slowly. My husband and I were even going to sleep in separate rooms for a while so that each dog could have someone at night. At the end of the day, I hope this dog gets a wonderful home but I do feel as though we were lead on and that the shelter didn’t give us a chance. If the dog wasn’t the right fit, then that’s fine; but 15 minutes is not enough of an indicator for that. This unfortunately can be part of the reason why animals stay in shelters while people purchase from breeders.

Wanted to do this through the review section first as I am skeptical about my needs for my 2 cats in need of rehoming. I'd really like them to go to the same home if anyone in the comments are looking for 2 adorable calico sister cats please reply under this thread and I will respond PROMPTLY with details. The last thing I want to do is separate these 2 cats after growing up together. Unfortunately we are in a time of need and would greatly appreciate help from my androscoggin community members.

My puppy, Emma, got her shots, including rabies and distemper, then I had her chipped. The event was well laid out with great staff who knew their stuff. The vet was great, and the wait time was minimal. Emma enjoyed her time, too.

Love it, usually clean, if it's not... I mean, they have animals what more do you want. 5/5 hospitality all the workers there are super nice.

Please adopt, don't buy from breeders. There are so many animals in shelters hoping for someone to bring them home.
