They are so kind and loving to their dogs. Caring for them until they find their perfect homes and in much better health than when they came. They take great pride in finding responsible pet owners so I can see why those that don’t stay up to date on vaccinations, heart worm prevention, and/or make sure their pets are spayed or neutered aren’t considered for adoption. I am so thankful that responsible rescues like this one exist and will always adopt from them.

I adopted my first ever dog from this AMAZING place. The staff was patient during the adoption process and did everything they could to pair me with the perfect friend for me and my situation. I came to find out later that everyone here is a volunteer and no one is paid. That just makes the time they spent not only pairing me and my buddy, but also the time they spent caring for him before we met, even more valuable. I can not thank HSNWLA enough for everything they did for me and all the care that they showed through the entire process, and continue to show.

I adopted my precious dog from HSNWLA two years ago after they rescued him. He has been the biggest joy in our family and we can't imagine life without him. I was so impressed by the excellent communication, screening process and care and compassion shown by the volunteers at this rescue during the adoption process. When the time was right for me I decided to become a volunteer and I am so glad I did. I am continually amazed at the level of care, dedication and hard work that goes into running this rescue. It takes a village, a village of wonderful volunteers donating their time, blood, sweat and tears to help as many dogs as possible find their forever homes. Rescue On!

I adopted a beagle puppy from HSNWLA four years ago. She has brought so much joy into our home. They are 100 percent volunteers and each dog they have receive excellent vet care and love. I would not hesitate to adopt from them again.

I’ve been a volunteer for nearly 2 years, and all I can say is they’re phenomenal! I’ve seen dogs come in emancipated due to neglect, and leave happier than they’ve ever been. And they, from the director down to all helpers, transporters, volunteer their time. They’re diligent with cleanliness and prevention of things like parvovirus. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

If I could put zero stars I would. They spend all day on social media posting about how dogs don't have homes to go to, but the second you apply for a dog they deny you on a stupid "requirement" they just make up, such as a "vet reference" which in their explanation to me is "an established vet care history." Not sure how I am supposed to get that if this would be my first EVER dog. I tried through multiple emails to work this no vet reference out, but everything I did they said wouldn't work. This group doesn't want you to adopt the dogs you want, but rather they want to give you the dog they "think" you should have. I would not recommend adopting from or supporting them in any way. If you will deny every first time dog owner then just say no first time dog owners.

My fiancé and I were so excited about a puppy we found on their Facebook page! Unfortunately, when we applied our application was denied because we did not have a pre-established vet. This puppy would be the first pet my fiancé and I have as a couple as well as being my fiancés first at all. We were not offered any kind of support or help in regards to possibly adopting the puppy. We offered to go find a vet for the puppy and were refused. Our intentions with the puppet were to raise it as a special needs dog for my fiancé as he is blind in one eye. We were never asked any questions as to why we wanted the puppy. We are very disappointed in the lack of cooperativeness and will NEVER be working with them again. We feel like we were push aside form some that was pre-chosen for the puppy before it became adoptable. They refuse to work with us is any cops sort and we’re very dismissive about and kind of compromise. We were told to find another pet that would not need a pre-established pet.How are we supposed to help give these pets a home, when the facility will not help us make that a reality?

First of all, the fact that they don't publish their phone number is a big clue as to the customer service, which is nonexistent. I emailed about bringing in a 3 month old puppy that someone dropped off near my home. I live in a secluded area with no neighbors. I had the dog bathed, treated for fleas and ticks, had food and other supplies to donate. They asked what parish I was in. When I stated Desoto they never replied back. Unfortunately the Desoto shelter is not near my home and it is very small and always full. So they would not take the puppy there. I already have two adopted dogs and I cannot take on a third. So definitely do not depend on this place to accept a stray dog. It's very sad! There is no excuse to ignore a request. It would have been fine if they had notified me either way and possibly gave me information about where to take the puppy. But I didn't even get that.

Truly a superb rescue. I have adopted from HSNWLA twice. Truly outstanding service received, and happy with my precious dog. I would 100% recommend adopting from HSNWLA.

An animal shelter where caring for, loving, and finding safe homes for the pets is the priority. No one at this organization is paid- run completely off of volunteers who devote hours of their time to make a difference to animals that need it. Adopt don’t shop.

We adopted our dog from here. The people there are all volunteers and very passionate about the dogs and finding them great homes. I dealt with several of the volunteers during my adoption process and brought my youngest brother up there too. They put in an incredible amount of their own time and money to ensure the dogs are happy and healthy.

Love the HSNWLA! The volunteers are amazing and kind hearted! They truly care about each and every dog under their care and go above and beyond to make sure they find the best homes. Would highly recommend them to anyone interested in adopting a new family member. Thanks y’all for everything you do!

Great rescue!! I saw a dog I fell in love with on fb and at the time wasn’t even really looking for another dog. But, I always kept going back to that picture and she had tugged at my heart strings so I had applied for her. Once I was approved, the adoption process was smooth, and I drove 4 1/2 hours away to pickup the dog I adopted. She was the sweetest, most lovable dog I ever met and I couldn’t imagine life without her. So thankful for this rescue and their mission to save dogs!

Northwest Louisiana is extraordinarily lucky to have this extraordinary rescue. The dogs are fed individual diets recommended by their vets. They are vetted regularly and medicated as needed. They spend as much time as possible outside playing. The volunteers are just that - NO ONE gets paid. They work exceptionally hard, and they establish personal relationships with each dog. Careful scrutiny is given to individuals wanting to adopt. The HSNWLA does all within its power to ensure a good home for adopted dogs. Any dog surrendered by an owner or pulled from the euthanasia lines at the parish facilities has won the lottery.

I am a 5 year volunteer here and am blessed to be a part of this group. We are not perfect,we come from every background, and cover the gamut in age of volunteers. The common ground is the love and care all volunteers have for our dogs. If I wasn't 100% happy with the care and love we provide I wouldn't share my time here. I can't wait for Mondays, to join my friends in caring for the precious dogs.

I have adopted two dogs from HSNWLA and I have been a volunteer for 3 years. The love and passion I see everyday from all of the volunteers is something like no other. Every dog that comes through the door is treated as our own and vetted to the full extent. I am blessed to be a part of such a well organized and successful group.

The most professional and caring organization I’ve seen to date. It being compromised of only volunteers, shows that the organization and those in it truly love and care for the animals and ensure that everything they do is in the best interest for them. These animals in the shelter are cared for and loved more often than maybe some other household pets. I’m a proud adopter of one of their beautiful Great Danes and could never have chosen a better shelter.

The Humane Society of Northwest Lousiana is a wonderful place. They truly care for all of the animals and try to give them the best life possible. If I were to adopt from any shelter I would choose them each and every time!

I have been volunteering at HSNWLA for about 8 months now. The dogs are very well cared for. No dog is allowed to be adopted until it is verified by a vet to be in good health. The negative comments I have seen on here don't pertain to the animals or their care but to the people volunteering here. Just remember folks, we all have a bad day every once in a while. Some people work well with animals and not with humans as well. I'm sorry if anyone has a bad people experince here but you will not find a better dog rescue than this one.

First experience trying to adopt and it's harder than trying to adopt a person. Very poor communication. Very discriminatory. Have been waiting 3 weeks on an update and they only emailed me if I reached out multiple times. They denied my application because my old dog, which I do not have anymore, wasnt neutered. I dont know what that has to do with me adopting a pup that will be neutered already. Very disappointed after being told such good things about this shelter. Will never try to adopt from here again.

The staff and volunteers of HSNWLA are among the very best rescuers and advocates I have known across the South! Their big hearts, tender and tireless attention to detail for the animals in their care, and to adopters and fosters, too, help to ensure the happily-ever-after endings our animals in need deserve!

Volunteers are friendly and comitted to the health and well being of these dogs and puppies. It is a clean no kill rescue that does vet checks on potential adopters. All animals are seen by a veterinarian and treated for any illness or injuries. Advocates of spay and neuter to stop overpopulation and abuse. Great place to volunteer or adopt. Honest place to send donations.

Volunteering with HSNWLA has been one of the best experiences of my life. I have had the privilege of loving hundreds of animals and watching them go to safe and happy homes while working with people who put their heart and soul into the rescue. To the previous reviewer who thinks that Sarrah Walton is not qualified to be a volunteer, you must have her confused with someone else. The Sarrah I know of spends countless hours at HSNWLA, providing for dogs in need in our community, rescuing dogs directly off the street and finding them homes, and searching for lost dogs to return them to their owners.

I was trying to adopt a fur baby from NWLAHS. Waited several weeks for her to become available. When she did, I sent my application in. During the weeks I waited I was in contact with someone through Facebook Messenger. I let whomever it was know that I sent my application in. They replied that they had received it but that I probably wasn’t going to be eligible because it was a requirement that their dogs be inside the home?! The fur baby I wanted was a large dog and would have had a large fenced in area to roam freely. I love my babies and they are taken care of like my own children are. BTW, there is NOTHING stating this in their requirements on their website. This is DISCRIMINATORY. And when I asked the person on messenger about it not being in their requirements and if the fur baby was an inside dog, she blocked me from Facebook and Messenger. Come to find out the person I was talking to is the Vice President of this shelter😮😥This was my first experience trying to adopt and it was obviously not a good one.
