What an amazing place!!! We have visited a lot of plantations over the years and this was our favorite. The staff was very informative, and the buildings so well preserved! They also have a man who visits that grew up on the plantation as the child of a sharecropper and will tell you all about his childhood. He even still makes the wire toys he used to play with as a kid! Also make sure you drive by the bridge and the plaques down by the river just past the park. There is a story about the kids of the family that owned it during WWII.

Great little plantation with a long history. The main house is set up with all original furnishings and decorations that belonged to the family who owned it. The house was given to the park system in 1998 when the last of the family moved out. There’s a lot of out buildings to include a general store, overseers house, and slave quarters. If you’re in the area, it’s worth the visit and is free!

Very well preserved Louisiana State historical property, with a long history. One of quite a few plantations in this area. The staff and rangers that work here are wonderful, and you can feel their passion about history in general. The post office/ store has quite a few items including LA passport books, magnets, etc. and is setup to resemble what it would have looked like. There is also a photo album in the store showing the before / after renovation photos for most buildings. Besides the house itself, there is a multitude of buildings and information to explore. Definitely a must-visit if you are interested in American history. One could easily spend most of a day here just exploring and learning.

This place has such rich history. The walking trail are beautiful and the shops and houses are nice. They have restrooms and great parking. The ground can be soft and muddy after the rain so come early if it's a busy day *on a few times a year* to get a good spot parking .The tour guides are friendly and knowledgeable about the area and we enjoy ourselves every time we visit. BUG SPRAY is a must and a hat if it's a sunny day.

Beautiful and Historic! No charge. Tours are only 2 times a day! The rangers are very informative. They will allow photos here inside , but not at Melrose!

We had a great guide, and enjoyed touring the place. It's very large, and very interesting. The main house is now air-conditioned which made it very pleasant. Our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. The entrance fee is free, but of course they appreciate donations.

It is always a great place to visit. Every time we find something new to see. The volunteers that took us on the home tour were very knowledgeable and informative.

This is a national park property. You can walk all over the grounds. Original plantation buildings, well preserved and you can go in most of them. Young lady park employee was super helpful in the general store. Gentleman in the main house gave us a tour, he was great. So much history here, so worth the visit. Lots of paper information and signage as well.

We had a great time as we saw some some great historical stuff. Everything on the plantation was set back to how it looked in the 50s and 60s. The volunteer also explained some of the older historical architecture of the old house.

We had a tour guide, and found it to be a great and eye opening experience. The plantation was founded in 1821. It was amazing how many different products or types of activities there were on the premises. The bottle garden was also very unique. Property is still well preserved.

This place will get five stars as the Park Service improves the upkeep. One odd the few preserved antebellum plantations.

You get the feel of what it was like back in the late 1800 to early 1900 on the plantation. The house has the original furniture from the mid 1800 still in it.

I mean, I guess it was nice or would have been nice. Idk, we called an hour before their posted last call got there on time and no one was around. Went the next day, again no one there. Walked around looked at a few things but the buildings were all locked up at 2:00 couldn’t even see in there. I guess just good luck or call multiple times. Oh, and when you go-there’s a historical society sign back off the road. That is where you turn in to park. It where it actually says Oakland plantation. Maps will take you to where you think you should turn in but that’s not the entrance. Pull in before you round the curve. I’m sure it’s nice. Just maybe plan better than we did.
