I stopped to get coffee here, unfortunately it was closed, even though the sign said open until 7. It’s inside a gas station. When I asked someone there at the gas station if it was open, their comment was look at the sign. It tells you the hours. My response was the sign says they don’t close until seven. They very rudely said it’s never open on Sundays.

This was a family road trip for us from TX to FL with stops along the way. We weren’t planning on going via Baton Rouge, LA but…..life. Oh well. While planning on filling up the car and the kids we happened upon the Bucky Joe’s stand inside the concession area.Fast forward and in a nutshell, it was one of the biggest and best surprises of the culinary side of our journey. Caveat: this part of the world is not known for wall to wall Michelin guide options, they’re there but you have to seek them out. Also we are not coffee snobs but we have been privileged as a family to have traveled all over the world and enjoy some really spectacular foodie experiences. This coffee was outstanding. The stand belongs to the owner, who also happens to be the barista, who also happens to be the master roaster.Being in LA I couldn’t help myself and ordered the Ragin’ Cajun (yes I went fru fru and away from the purist options which were also available). For science, of course, because science is never complete without a dose of cayenne pepper on the palette.The coffee was a beautiful balance of acidity, smokiness, sweetness and fruity notes. Even with a dairy milk substitute which I think makes it harder to strike that balance, it was there. It was the best coffee I’d had in…..I can’t even remember. In our domicile, there are a bunch of boutique coffee stands to choose from. Many talk the talk but thus far, meh. This was definitely *not* *not* * not* meh. Just about as far from that as you could get from.And from the get go, you can tell there is some real heart poured into the product. Just watching the coffee being made, it’s a multi step process right in front of the customer with some genuine incorporation of technical thought put into it. The hubs and I were genuinely impressed with the result and were impressed with the level of care that went into our brews. I hate to say this but that level of effort being put into anything available to the general public is really hard to come by unless you’re putting down half your wallet. My sizeable specialty latte was the best $5 I’d spent this entire year.So big kudos to this small business. I genuinely wish to see it branch out because if it were ever to make it to my neck of the woods I’d be a steady customer. Really well done, great value and was a terrific perk to a very long, tiring journey.
